Imagine missing a few car payments and your entertainment system gets shut down, miss a few more and your windows refuse to go up and down, miss another, and your heater/AC stops working. Now when the bank decides that it has had enough it automatically locks your doors and drives itself driverlessly back to the bank.

Yes, Ford applied for a patent to make the repossession process go smoother. For the bank, that is. The patent document was submitted to the United States Patent Office in August 2021 but it was formally published Feb. 23. It's titled "Systems and Methods to Repossess a Vehicle." It describes several ways to make the life of somebody who has missed several car payments harder.
It explicitly says the system, which could be installed on any future vehicle in the automaker's lineup with a data connection would be capable of "[disabling] a functionality of one or more components of the vehicle." Everything from the engine to the air conditioning. For vehicles with autonomous or semi-autonomous driving capability, the system could "move the vehicle from a first spot to a second spot that is more convenient for a tow truck to tow the vehicle... move the vehicle from the premises of the owner to a location such as, for example, the premises of the repossession agency," or, if the lending institution considers the "financial viability of executing a repossession procedure" to be unjustifiable, the vehicle could drive itself to the junkyard.
The first thing to know is that if your vehicle is connected to the internet in any way, this system could theoretically work on it. The application likewise describes a "repossession computer" that could be installed on future cars to make this system function smoothly, but it also states no extra hardware necessarily needs to be installed on the vehicle for it to function. "In some embodiments, the vehicle computer may be configured to perform some or all, functions of the repossession system computer." Basically, if your car has an infotainment system already set up to receive something like over-the-air updates, this could probably work without physical modifications.
It appears that Ford is leading the pack on these self-repossessing cars but you can be sure that car makers around the world are taking note.

Repossessing vehicles itself is basically a work place hazard for the collectors. People being repossessed very often are absolutely entitled and belligerent during the process if they are present during the event. Even to the point of physical violence or damage to the vehicle.
I had one vehicle repossessed during a strenuous time I was going through. They parked the flat-bed truck a block away. When I saw him in my driveway, I went outside and handed him both sets of keys. He looked at me in the most surprised manner, that I in no way gave him any difficulty with the process and he couldn't believe it.
There is plenty of videos of these typical encounters. I am not surprised they have figured out a way to do this job more safely. Remember, the bank owns it until the last payment and if they do collect it, and resell it, it will likely be at a loss compared to what you were supposed to pay for it.

For the vehicles that will not have that feature, there are prototype drone/ automated tow vehicles being developed (unable to find the video).
It has become apparent that tech never plays out its decisions to their logical conclusion before going full steam ahead. Alternatively, maybe they do, but do not give one iota. “That will be someone else’s problem.”
Decision makers base their decisions on believing they will not end up on the pointy end of the stick. That kind of thinking has been exploited throughout history.

Short funny story: In cub scouts our scout master had us making paddles one day. This was back in the day when paddling was more common.To this day I do not know how he convinced us to make them other than being young naive children.

A fellow down the road from me just bought a 'new' van. It was 11 years old and he paid 3,000 euros. Has a few dents. Works just fine.
The problem is the amount of people that still think credit rating means something, they actively persue millstones and play into the hands of the parasites.
Look, can I be honest for once? I don't believe there is any saving the human species. They're f***ed. The vast majority were captured by the system before they reached 10 years old.. the only thing I sometimes wonder is how the cr*p I ended up on the this timeline; unless it is simply as an 'interested' onlooker.

When I was in middle school back in the '70s, our gyn teacher who was the school's football program coach would watch for kids who ran across a patch of grass as a shortcut to the gym instead of the sidewalks. Whenever we got caught, he'd line us up in front of the entire class then wack us with a paddle with air holes drilled in it so that it can be swung faster. Everyybody can hear the swoosh and wack. It sure did hurt and the coach while doing it said, "it's hurting me more than it will hurt you." Back in those days we kids had no rights and our parents were not surprised at all that we got physical punishment. My own foster father routinely will take me behind the shed and whack me whenever I forgot to do a chore or something he asked me to do.

what happens when 'they' repossess it after it has been fully paid off?
But for every action like this there is bound to be actions to counteract it, like the whole industry around tuning more performance from the motor by 'unlocking' the features in the black box.

I had the pleasure of attending a secondary school in the UK, where the woodwork teacher would line us up before the lesson and then "tap" each of us on the head with a baseball bat "just in case we were tempted to misbehave".
After two years, because of my high IQ (and modesty), I was shunted into a boys grammar school, where the woodwork master would throw the nearest sharp object at any boy suspected of misbehaving. One day he made the mistake of trying to skewer a tall lad with a chisel, which impaled itself in a wall. The lad broke a chair over the teacher's head, causing him to spend some days in hospital before being dismissed from his job.
Ah, those were the days! Never a dull moment.
As regards electric vehicles, I'd love to own one on this small island.* I have photovoltaic panels and lots of sunshine for charging to keep running costs low. However, the pecuniary situation of my pension might force me to settle for an electric motorbike. No doubt it will be equipped with a self-balancing mechanism in order that it can reposess itself in the event that I disclose some unapproved thought on social media.
*Small compared with the UK.

Why does every piece of "green" tech come with opportunities for greater control? My poor neighbors have been suffering this west Texas summer due to putting solar panels on their house that do not work, frying their electrical system. The company cannot seem to fix the problem, even though their contractors come out and put more holes in the roof on a regular basis. I do not see anything good coming from these poison battery cars, either. If one of these cars catches on fire in our semi-arid desert, we most likely will not have enough water to put it out--three thousand gallons seems to be the going rate on these fires, and there are many years when we simply will not have it to use. I am also concerned about these rare earth metals ending up in our landfill, which was designed and located poorly in the first place. Are landfills poisoned with these batteries and panels going to be future superfund sites? Maybe the crime families can afford this, but our community can't.

Yes, over the years there has been a very clear pattern of control that has emerged with virtually every aspect of green energy. While there are lots of examples, home thermostats, and smart meters come to mind immediately.

I'll never buy a new car for reasons like this. My father's truck has its power severely limited when the computer inside detects something wrong with the vehicle. Most times it isn't right but it can only be fixed by going to the dealership.
I've had my 2000 Honda CR-V for a very long time and it works like a champ even going on 200,000 miles. Planning to buy another older Japanese car if something happens to my current one.
EDIT: The article also says its for any future vehicle going ahead if it can be applied to the car. So your car is safe. If it's newer, I still wouldn't trust the electric devices that could be placed inside the car for surveillance.

The other day one of those solar companies' knocked at my door in a 'no solicitation' neighborhood. Never have been a fan of door-to-door sales so I shut them down quickly but decided to do a little research on them. Boy oh boy are people reporting problem with customer service and install or lack thereof. That was a small surprise because solar is not new and would expect they'd have streamlined the process by now. I'd want to practically be an expert in home solar before I had someone drilling holes and potentially making a mess of things but at that point I may as well do it myself and contract out the rest. From what I read there is a sense these companies are poorly training staff and not overseeing the work is done right by non technical laborers.
Also legitimately concerned about the same things you mentioned and what's interesting is I never read any DETAILED plan as to how to deal with all the green energy tech once its headed to landfills. The first generation solar homes are sure to have had panels replaced by now. A drop in the bucket when more and more homes need them replaced. According to sources, almost 3 million homes in the United States already have solar panels installed. It's going to be some interesting times as green energy ages and fails.
Side note: Have you seen how expensive it's gotten to repair new tech vehicles? Yikes! People are going to be financially strapped paying off these vehicles and not be able to afford the repairs when they fail.
Tech also will drive one crazy with planned obsolescence. Those people having panels installed today? They are going to be kicking themselves for not waiting:

I had a company install two 400 Watt panels on my flat concrete roof, plus an MPPT charge controller and batteries. I installed an inverter and a 14 volt/40 Amp power supply to take over when there was no sun. This system runs my small home office. I replaced the AGM batteries after 10 years. One day soon I'll expand the system to provide more power to run the central heating.
