I have been wondering about this topic for some time how gender dysphoria is different from, for example, anorexia: someone looks in the mirror and sees/feels something that they are not. Why do we consider one thing to be a mental illness and someone is being treated, while the other is why we assume that an adolescent can fully consciously consent to sex hormones? It's a mystery to me.
I always wondered what the push was to begin the medical interventions on these kids. I assumed they went through years of therapy. Not the case in the US. This is a fascinating story by a very articulate Trans woman, Brianna Ivy that was pushed into medical transition at the age of 13. She had the whole transition, starting with puberty blockers, then hormone replacement and the "top and bottom" surgeries. The argument seems to be that these kids will commit suicide if they don't have the transitions. This of course, is a devastating position for a parent to be in. Brianna is now speaking out against this and is very candid as to the mutilation that occurred and ultimately the rejection by the doctor that did this to her. Very worth watching.
If an adult chooses this, fine. But manipulating these kids with basically no counseling as you will see. I have read or watched testimonies of many kids and there is almost no counseling, just rushing through it as quickly as possible. It seems many were going through what all kids go through as they approach adulthood. A sort of apprehension at the changes. A kid can't legally get a tatoo in the US but you can stop puberty, take powerful hormones that have permanent effects and mutilating surgical procedures with ease. Go figure.
