Starman (1984)

Dear Friends, some of you may remember (or may not ever have seen!) this beautiful, clever and heartwarming film, featuring a young Jeff Bridges with Karen Allen.

It's a John Carpenter film, but while it's sci-fi (and very good sci-fi, too) it's really more of a love story. And I've seen some Oscar winners' performances that weren't as good as Bridges' here.

Extracts from a few (2016) Rotten Tomatoes reviews:

• Bridges has rarely been better.
• Sweet, smart and wonderfully acted.
• It may be the best sci-fi/romance hybrid ever made.

I'd not seen it for many years, and on an impulse I watched it again last night. I was reminded just how good it was — and, for 1984, how good the SFX was as well. And I was (again) surprisingly moved by it all, too.

i remember this movie quite well despite only seeing it once as an obnoxious teenager.
it was a very moving film in places.
There was a line in the film where the alien is asked what he thinks of humans and i loved his response.
It had struck a nerve. Positively.
I won't post what he said ( I can't fully remember word for word).
I must see this film again soon.

(I skipped most of the trailer, i prefer just seeing the film again)
(whenever i see a trailer and i know i shall i like, i skip it and write the name of the film down)

Remember it well. The 80s was a superb decade for films, especially sci-fi. We had Bladerunner, Aliens, ET, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Mad Max, Robocop, Predator, The Terminator, They Live, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi of course, the original Star Trek movies...the list goes on. So many trips to the cinema back then. What times we had.

In those days sci-fi often had a positive spin, a message of hope for the future. That's since been shoved aside in favour of a dark, gritty, dystopian outlook. Such a shame.

If you enjoyed Starman, then I highly recommend these two other 80s classics.

Thanks for the reminder of this film Bill and I agree fully with your comments, I saw it on release at the cinema and have watched it again a few times since then. I now want to watch it again now that you've posted this so it's good that we've got dark, cold nights, perfect for a snug night in with movie munchies!

Yes Mark, the decade of the 80s was brilliant for movies. I haven't been to the cinema for about 7 years as the woke rubbish puts me off and I don't like to waste money.

BTW has anyone seen" Jules" ? with Ben Kingsley . its new 2023 and revolves around a crashed flying saucer. Its an absolute gem in my mind

If I were to bet on it, I would say the quote you're talking about is this:

".... shall I tell you what I find beautiful about you (humans)? You are at your very best when things are worst..."

These two bits of trivia are interesting. In Corey Goode's story he dealt with a blue avian named Ra-Teir-Eir and they used spherical ships. David Wilcock believes he's the source of The Law of One material. That material was channeled between 1981-84. The release date of the movie was 12/14/84.

One small aspect I fondly remember and quote from this movie is the line

I remember it from all those years ago too. One line I never forgot was when he took over driving the car and said he’d been observing and then accelerated through the traffic lights because green meant go, red meant stop and amber meant go very, very fast!

‘I mean you no harm’ stood out as well. Was it from her to a bird in a tree just before meeting him, or did I dream that?

Movies are so powerful, they hang around in the mind forever, as do books. Some more than others. Most modern films and TV series I dip into these days seem quite dark to me. Not only so many scenes shot in the dark but the energy they can leave with you. Similarly with computer games, they affect mind, mood, dreams. Puts a whole new spin on the ‘ghost in the machine’.

Great art should inspire, inform and uplift, it’s out there but disappearing. I’m still in shock that great works like Shakespeare are being REWRITTEN because they offend some authority. Er. What? Who?

@mark They Live was like a cheap cult b movie at the time, but was not easily forgotten. TV series V and movie V for Vendetta, powerful stuff. Do we have have a thread somewhere with movie/tv series recommends from members?

Anyways, thanks for reminding us of the good ole days of storytelling…

This is also one of my favorite old films. Own this one too! Was mighty hard to track down on DVD.. Apparently they tried to block the reproduction of this film for a while to the point you couldn't even rent it on Prime, VUDU, or any streaming services. Researching as to why turned up a lot of odd conspiracy theories.

I originally wrote that I own this one too (original Starman with Bridges), and love it so much I watch it about twice a year. It's one of the most beautiful films.:heart2::heart2::heart2:
