Silly Invention: Useful or Not? Idea, "Heli-Submarine" Flying Submersible
I don't know at all if this concept has been developed outside of the silly vertical takeoff and landing, and jet engine based craft... BUT... doesn't it seem like a Pontooned helicopter or something like that could be waterproofed, pressure-proofed inside and outside, and fitted with equipment that might allow it to submerge?
Or would it be too light to submerge? I don't understand those things too well and don't know if there is a propulsion system light enough to store aboard a helicopter.
I guess it could be very large to carry the extra weight.
Any thoughts on this poorly developed concept? LMAO! :focus:

Ideally this aircraft would first land on the surface of the water, fold in the airfoil/blades, then fill up the ballast and submerge.
Could it happen? Yes/No/Maybe/Why Not?
What inspired this? partially this pic (shown before but it's relevant to my dumb idea)

Re: Silly Invention: Useful or Not? Idea, "Heli-Submarine" Flying Submersible
Sounds like an interesting engineering challenge. I see no fundamental reason why it would not be possible - that said I would not like to get into such a machine... A gyro-copter version may be fractionally more simple to design as the thrust engine for the gyro could also propel the sub, and the unpowered lift rotor may be a little easier to engineer to be submersion capable.

No fair, yours can dive.
But in DUNE the birdlike craft were called Ornithopters.

Awesome! I'm still waiting for my flying car ;)
(They did have a cool flying sub in Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea ;))
