Re: VA study: 22 Vets Commit Suicide Every Day (22 who could be Fathers, Brothers, Uncles, Sons)
"An estimated 22 veterans commit suicide in the United States every day, a slightly higher number than the 18-per-day...Researchers found that the average age of a veteran who commits suicide is about 60." http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/02/01/veterans-suicide/1883329/
This author is talking about mostly male veterans. Few care about this and the (male) author even minimises the fact alot more than 18 mainly-men a day are killing themselves (as 22 suicides a day is alot more than 18!)
According to Aaron Russo, Feminism was never about women being equal to men. Many feminists have worked to put women above men evidenced in "male disposibility" e.g. the draft has only applied to men in major military powers, greater male suicides (which are mostly ignored), work-place deaths are over 90% male, ...

every 65 minutes or so a veteran kills himself (or herself)
1 out of every 4 US homeless is a US military veteran
1 out of every 4 US homeless US military veterans is a woman with children
a US military veteran is more likely to have a child with birth defects or autism
a female US military veteran is at increased risk for having a child with birth defects or autism
Women give plenty for this county, not sure what that was about Mulder

~Dear Mulder, I try to avoid the use of dramatic words or expressions like: "nobody", "everybody", "no one", "all the time", "they", "them", "us", "(all) females are like ...", "(all) males are like ...", "(all) new agers are like ...", "never", "impossible", "always", "the biggest", "the only one", "the first" etc. etc.
WHAT THEY ALL HAVE IN COMMON IS:
They can be considered as part of absolutism-thinking / 'strawman argument' reasoning serving to express ones own frustration dealing with massive injustice, abuse, corruption etc.
Any form of generalization is NOT doing Justice to Full Spectrum of the Truth.
If you really want support in your struggle to fight injustice of any kind, start with being aware how you use language to express your rage!
cheers,
John
ps. I will make a list of more effective alternative & realistic words to all those grand big drama words we tend to use "to make a case".
small pre-snippets: ... if my sources are corect ... what I am aware of ... as far as I am able to figure out ...

Whew.
I came here prepared to comment on the substance of this thread: the heavy suicide death toll among American vets....
But I seem to have wandered into the wrong place.
[Selene ducks a flying beer bottle.... then a chair.... the knife embeds itself into the wall over her head.....]
Carry on.

"1 out of every 4 US homeless is a US military veteran

I have not found statistics supporting your assertion, I've found much lower levels of male & female veteran homelessness: "Experts believe there are at least 6,500 female veterans sleeping in cars, shelters or on the streets every night." - (http://www.oprah.com/oprahshow/Homel...#ixzz2K6VKsB4r), "About 13 percent of homeless Afghan and Iraq war veterans are women..." http://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2012.../vets-d31.html Can you provide me your source(s)?

You are talking about suicide - a very serious subject which does warrant dramatic words. It's mainly male-soldiers who are successfully committing suicide, so I was pointing this out in a way that left no-doubt. I'm very concerned about females/transexual/intersex people committing suicide too, but you're talking about US veterans, which is mostly men, so in this case I was responding from the male view-point.
Your comment about Jeep funeral cars was sarcastic, so a part of my response to your post was also sarcastic. It sounded differently than I intended, so I've edited it in accord with my original thought - which is in feminist countries, men have become largely disposable and I was simply pointing this out.
You're welcome to start threads and other people including myself are welcome to reply (in a constructive way) to share ideas and learn from each-other, but we don't have to agree. Feel free to show me your list of words, as I've worked as an English teacher and I'm always interested in new words.

still ... Mulder, if you really want support/sympathy in your struggle to fight injustice of any kind, start with being aware how you use language to express your rage!

Re: VA study: 22 Vets Commit Suicide Every Day (22 who could be Fathers, Brothers, Uncles, Sons)
I've been homeless and some worker in the shelters told me about the homeless statistics, and there were flyers everywhere about vets too, so I think my assertion is true.
In Seattle, a great number of panhandlers and homeless do in fact have children, more of the former than the latter.
They get housing faster when they have kids.
But take it from someone who knows, there are day rooms full of homeless women all across Seattle,
and just because someone is walking instead of sitting or sleeping doesn't mean they have a home.
Some totally normal looking people can't live at home because of addiction or mental health or sexual identity issues.
My statistics are not far off. Cities like ours attract homeless because of the good weather and friendly people.
It's not the same in every town.

The issue of "suicide" doesn't fill me with rage because I believe: "Energy flows where your consciousness goes," and I don't want to "feed" any negative entities with my rage.
I agree with you that language is important, but I'm not seeing any tangible sympathy for veterans in the general population no matter what is said!
Citizens certainly aren't holding Politicians accountable - e.g. Obama promised in 2008 to "end" all wars, but he's kept them going and even started new wars! Obama was even given the Nobel Peace prize on Dec 10th 2009 while veterans were ignored.

Re: VA study: 22 Vets Commit Suicide Every Day (22 who could be Fathers, Brothers, Uncles, Sons)
I heard this on the radio a few days ago and was shocked, I guess it shouldn't be shocking though, all the horror they endure, the illnesses, the lack of understanding from friends and family about the horrors, then they are forgotten. Those who break the programming and become activists against the wars and corruption may redirect their energy and accomplish some good, but how hard it must be to live with the memories and DU poisoning and apathy at home. "Thank you for your service" must sound terribly hollow to these people.
A neighbor of mine whose nephew was in Iraq killed himself a few years ago. He told his wife to go upstairs with the baby and wait for him and once she was out of sight he pulled out a gun and shot himself in the head. oooh rah.

For my employer and myself i work in assisted living projects for clients with a psychiatric background,( from age 15 to eeeeeeeer let me think
, 68) problems slash isuues i encounter are varying from drugs, asylumseekers, , veterans(ptsd) sh!t out of luck, burnouts, meltdowns, used abused and dumped and so on, also two days a week I work in a homeless shelter, and WtC, YOU ARE correct, not sure this will get me any applause or thank yous but women seem to be less commited to take the suicide option for the reason that "men are dumb@sses and cant take care of themselves more often and take in a lady who has run out of options, if this particular lady has run out of luck in life, she at least has a roof now and "some"better chance, often payed with you know what, not pretty, on the other hand, much less of a sh!t is given about a man in the same position, and then they wonder why they commit suicide, not allowed to live a decent life and not allowed to die a decent death, shucks")
