The US space agency (Nasa) has released a spectacular new picture of the Planet
Saturn, acquired by the Cassini spacecraft in July. The image was produced as part
of The Day The Earth Smiled Project, which was led by Dr Carolyn Porco. She
describes how and why the picture was put together. Four months ago, our
cameras on Cassini were commanded to execute a routine imaging sequence during
an event that was anything but routine.
On 19 July, an array of overlapping images framing Saturn, its entire ring system
and a host of its moons was acquired while Cassini was deep in the shadow created
by the planet's eclipse of the Sun. This arrangement of Sun, Saturn, and machine
made for a rare opportunity to image from the outer Solar System the planets in
close to the Sun.The intent: To catch a precious glimpse of our own planet - tiny,
remote, alone - as it would be seen from a billion miles away.
Images of this nature had been taken before. The famous Voyager 1990 "Pale Blue
Dot" image of Earth became, in the hands of Carl Sagan, a romantic allegory of the
human condition and an inspirational call to environmental protection and planetary
brotherhood. And Cassini's previous 2006 version, taken from Saturn orbit, showing
the startling juxtaposition of our dot of a planet beside the enormity of Saturn's
rings, became the most beloved Cassini image.
But from the very start, the plans for the 19 July mosaic included something very
special: If all went well, the images would capture a glimpse of Earth alongside
Saturn and its rings at the very moment that people all over the globe would be
contemplating their connectedness to each other and to all life on Earth,
appreciating the rarity of our planet within the Solar System, marvelling at their
own existence, and rejoicing at the very thought of having their picture taken from
a billion miles away.

the GIF after the break "the first hexagon movie of its kind." The "movie" is made
from a compilation of images taken by the Cassini spacecraft, and depicts a
hurricane-like storm at the center of the "hexagon" that has populated the planet's

In June of 2012 on the way to the Sacramento UFO Conference, we had the good
fortune to interview Norman Bergrun the 91 year old author of "Ringmakers of
Saturn". Norman is a scientist/engineer who worked in an above top secret capacity
(his level of clearance, way above the President) for Lockheed. Prior to that he was
at NACA a precursor to NASA.
Upon leaving Lockheed, he wrote "Ringmakers of Saturn" about the enormous craft
spotted in the rings of Saturn and became something of an outcast in the scientific

Fame, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the Federation of American

'Waves' detected on Titan moon’s lakesBy Paul Rincon

Scientists believe they have detected the first liquid waves on the surface of
another world.The signature of isolated ripples was observed in a sea called Punga
Mare on the surface of Saturn's moon Titan.However, these seas are filled not with
water, but with hydrocarbons like methane and ethane.These exist in their liquid
state on Titan, where the surface temperature averages about -180C.Planetary
scientist Jason Barnes discussed details of his findings at the 45th Lunar and
Planetary Science Conference (LPSC) in Texas this week.
Titan is a strange, looking-glass version of Earth with a substantial atmosphere and
a seasonal cycle. Wind and rain shape the surface to form river channels, seas,
dunes and shorelines.But much of what's familiar is also turned sideways: the
moon's mountains and dune fields are made of ice, rather than rock or sand, and
liquid hydrocarbons take up many of the roles played by water on Earth.
The vast majority of Titan's lakes and seas are concentrated around the north polar
region. Just one of these bodies of liquid - Ligeia Mare - is estimated to contain
about 9,000 cubic km of mostly liquid methane, equating to about 40 times the
proven reserves of oil and gas on Earth.
An image of Titan's north pole taken by the Cassini probe during a flyby in July
2012 shows sunlight being reflected from surface liquid in much the same way as a
mirror re-directs light. This phenomenon is known as a specular reflection.

Titan is Saturn's largest moon and the second biggest in the Solar System
It is the only moon in the Solar System with clouds and a substantial atmosphere
Wind and rain create similar features to those found on Earth, such as dunes, lakes
and riversBut on Titan it rains liquid methane, filling the rivers, lakes and seas with hydrocarbons
Dr Barnes, from the University of Idaho in Moscow, US, used a mathematical model
to investigate whether the features in the image were compatible with waves.
"We think we've found the first waves outside the Earth," he told the meeting.
"What we're seeing seems to be consistent with waves at just a few locations in
Punga Mare [with a slope] of six degrees."
He said other possibilities, such as a wet mudflat, could not be ruled out.
But assuming these were indeed waves, Dr Barnes calculates that a wind speed of
around 0.75 m/s is required to produce ripples with the requisite slope of six
degrees. That points to the waves being just 2cm high. "Don't make your surfing
vacation reservations for Titan just yet," Dr Barnes quipped.
However, Titan appears to be on the brink of major seasonal changes, which
present important opportunities for scientists to gain a better understanding of this
complex and endlessly surprising world.
"The expectation is that any day now, the winds will start getting strong enough as
we move into northern summer, and the waves will start picking up," Ralph Lorenz,
from the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (JHUAPL) in Maryland, told BBC News.
"You can also get a phenomenon known as wind set-up, where wind over a body of
water will cause the liquid to pile up, potentially causing a storm surge."
He added: "A metre of storm surge, a metre of tides, is certainly within the realms
of possibility for Titan. Whether we can see that [with Cassini] is another matter."
Dr Lorenz said he was hopeful that sea level rise of a metre in height could cause
shorelines to migrate and that this could be picked up from orbit.
Titan operates on a 30-year seasonal cycle, with the northern region currently
approaching summer solstice, which it will mark in 2017.

Titan's lakes Titan's lakes and seas are concentrated at the saturnian moon's north
pole Computer models of Titan's weather suggest that the northern summer is
approaching the rainy season, in which liquid hydrocarbons are "pumped" from the
south pole to the north by the climate cycle.Sometime soon, scientists expect,
clouds will start to gather at the north pole and it should start to rain.
"We have a long-term picture of liquid levels rising in the north and declining in the
south. But that's against the backdrop of seeing what we think are evaporite
deposits around the northern seas and lakes," Dr Lorenz explained.
These evaporite regions are Titan's equivalent to salt flats on Earth where bodies of
water evaporate, leaving behind minerals that had previously been dissolved in the
water.
"That suggests that while the sea level is rising in the current epoch, at some time
in the past, the liquid level was much higher than it is today. We've now mapped
most of the surface and there aren't large areas where you could hide another sea,"
he explained.
The amount of moisture in the climate system might fluctuate because methane is
continuously destroyed in the atmosphere by sunlight. But scientists think it could
also be re-supplied via volcanic belches from beneath the moon's surface.
'Tidal roar'
In his own presentation at the LPSC, Dr Lorenz focused on a narrow "throat"
feature that separates the two main basins of Titan's largest sea, Kraken Mare.
Dubbing it the "Throat of Kraken", he said it was similar in size to the Straits of
Gibraltar and might generate fast-moving tidal currents through the narrow channel.
Dr Lorenz pointed out that on Earth, such circumstances can produce whirlpools,
and in the case of the Corryvreckan off the coast of Scotland, a tidal maelstrom
generates a roar that can be heard 16km away. Whether such phenomena existed
at this location on Titan was pure speculation, he said.
Dr Lorenz explained: "It's really getting quite exciting, because we're starting to get
a literal big picture, in the sense that the radar coverage [of Titan's surface] is close
to complete. But because we're moving into northern summer, there's better
lighting, which means the camera and the near-infrared spectrometer on Cassini
are also able to map the northern seas."
"Everything is really starting to come together, and the seas and lakes are very
much becoming the central topic in Titan science."

Titan - A Place Like Home (Full Documentary 2005)

Jets of water-ice are blasted thousands of km above the surface of Saturn's tiny moon Enceladus
The evidence for an "ocean" of water under the surface of Saturn's moon Enceladus
appears to be overwhelming.The little world has excited scientists ever since jets of
icy material were seen squirting into space from a striped region at its south pole.
Now, exquisite measurements using Nasa's Cassini probe as it flew over the moon
have allowed researchers to detect the water's gravitational signal.
Science magazine reports the details.
"The measurements that we have done are consistent with the existence of a large
water reservoir about the size (volume) of Lake Superior in North America," Prof
Luciano Iess told BBC News.
A European comparison would be 245 times the water mass of Lake Garda in Italy.
The findings of Prof Iess and his team will boost the view that the 500km-wide
moon would be one of the best places beyond Earth to go look for the existence of
microbial life.

Cassini's data suggests the liquid volume lies about 40km under Enceladus's ice
crust.This would put it directly on top of the moon's layered, rocky interior. The
case for a subglacial ocean has been growing ever since Cassini first sensed a
diffuse atmosphere at the moon in 2005.Subsequent observations pinned the
source of this atmosphere to mineral-rich streams of water vapour flowing away
from surface fractures dubbed "tiger stripes" for their resemblance to the markings
on a big cat.Cassini even flew through the plumes to "taste" their load of salts and
organic (carbon-rich) molecules.

Enceladus's orbit around Saturn is highly eccentric - it is a big ellipse. The giant
planet's gravity should therefore be expected to squeeze and stretch the little moon
as it travels this path, heating some of its ices and melting them. Some of the
resulting liquid could then be hurled into space through the deep tiger fractures,
although quite how this happens is not yet fully understood.Nonetheless, the new
work reinforces this general picture.It has involved measuring tiny changes in the
speed of Cassini as it passed through Enceladus's own gravitational field.
These changes in velocity were as small as 20 millionths of a metre per second.
They enabled Prof Iess and colleagues to map variations in the distribution of mass
on the moon. The large anomaly they spotted in the data at the southern pole is
best explained by the presence of a big volume of water.
"What we see is consistent with a water pocket of about 8-10km in depth, and this
pocket can extend up to southern latitudes of 50 degrees around the pole," the
Sapienza University of Rome researcher explained.

Stripes The moon has long fractures in its ice surface that have been dubbed tiger
stripes There is strong evidence to suspect the existence of sub-glacial oceans at a
number of Solar System moons.Saturn's largest satellite, Titan, probably has one.
Similarly, the Jupiter moons Europa, Ganymede and Callisto would fall into this
class; and perhaps even Triton at Neptune. Of these, Enceladus and Europa draw
the most interest because it is more likely that their water would be in contact with
rock. This could make for some interesting chemistry - the sort of reactions that
might facilitate the emergence of life.
Prof Andrew Coates, of the UK's UCL-Mullard Space Science Laboratory,
commented: "I think Enceladus has gone to the top of the charts in terms of a
place where there could be life.
"It's got several of the things which you need for life - there's certainly the
presence of heat, there's liquid water in this ocean, there's organics and that type
of chemistry going on.
"The only question is, has there been enough time for life to develop?"
Prof David Stevenson, from the California Institute of Technology, added: "We don't
have an answer to that, but there are some theoretical ideas.
"First, let me say that the ocean that we have found could keep things going for
tens of millions of years, maybe 100 million years, but, of course, we don't know
whether the ocean is being added to at present or is freezing up.
"And, maybe, Enceladus does go through cycles and those cycles would be related
to the eccentricity of the orbit. It's possible that the orbit has not always had the
same eccentricity."

Interesting to learn the links between "Solon" in J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings series and saturn....Tolkien read a lot about the hidden history of europe, and Lord of the Rings is actually about that lost memory.

It has long baffled astronomers, and now the strange hexagon at Saturn's
north pole has a new mystery. These two natural colour images from NASA's
Cassini spacecraft show the changing appearance of Saturn's north polar
region between 2012 and 2016.

the north-polar hexagon on Saturn. The colour change is thought to be an
effect of Saturn's seasons. 'In particular, the change from a bluish color to a

hazes in the atmosphere as the north pole approaches summer solstice in
May 2017,' Nasa said.

The photos show the hexagon-shaped storm in Saturn's northern hemisphere
The Cassini spacecraft has sent back the first views from its new orbit around
Saturn.Last month, the Nasa probe began a new phase of its mission - one that
involves making a series of daredevil manoeuvres over the next nine months.
The phase will end with Cassini being destroyed in the atmosphere of a planet it
has been studying for 12 years.The new photos show the hexagon-shaped storm in
Saturn's northern hemisphere.Cassini began what are known as its ring-grazing
orbits on 30 November. Each of these week-long orbits - 20 in all - lifts the
spacecraft high above Saturn's northern hemisphere before sending it hurtling past
the outer edges of the planet's main rings.Nasa said that it would release images
from future passes that included some of the closest-ever views of the outer rings
and small moons that orbit there.Carolyn Porco, the head of Cassini's imaging
team, commented: "This is it, the beginning of the end of our historic exploration of
Saturn. "Let these images - and those to come - remind you that we've lived a bold
and daring adventure around the Solar System's most magnificent planet."
The destructive ending being planned for Cassini is a result of the spacecraft having
nearly exhausted its fuel.But Nasa is also concerned about the small, yet important
possibility that the probe will crash into one of Saturn's moons at some point in the
future.Given that some of these bodies, such as Enceladus, are potential targets in
the search for extra-terrestrial life, it has the potential to contaminate these bodies
with terrestrial microbes borne on Cassini.Starting from April, Cassini will begin its
grand finale, in which it will make the first of 22 dives through the 2,400km gap
between the planet and its innermost ring.The spacecraft will make its final plunge
into the atmosphere of Saturn on 15 September.
