Calm Lakes On Titan Could Mean Smooth Landing for Future Space Probes

The lakes of liquid methane on Saturn’s moon, Titan, are perfect for paddling but not for surfing. New research led by The University of Texas at Austin has found that most waves on Titan’s lakes reach only about 1 centimeter high, a finding that indicates a serene environment that could be good news for future probes sent to the surface of that moon.

Spectacular Celestial Show: Moon, Saturn & Antares Grace the Night Sky

On July 6, 2017 – the very bright waxing gibbous moon will erase many stars from the slate of night. Will you see the planet Saturn just south of tonight’s moon? Probably, if you look, and if clouds don’t hide them. If not, try covering the moon with your finger to gaze at nearby Saturn. Although the supergiant red star Antares is not as bright as Saturn, it might be easier to see since it’s farther from the moon’s glare.

On July 7, 2017 – look for a line-up of bright celestial objects. The moon, planet Saturn and bright star Antares come out first thing after sunset and stay out until the wee hours after midnight. They can be seen from around the world, although the line is more symmetrical – with Saturn more equidistant from the July 7 moon and Antares – from Earth’s Western Hemisphere.

There is a fundamental limit to the knowability of the universe. The Heisenberg uncertainty principle tells us that the more precisely we try to define one property, the less definable is its counterpart. Knowing a particle’s location perfectly means its velocity is unknowable. But unmeasured properties are not just uncertain; they are undefined. Quantum mechanics seems to imply that ALL possible properties, paths, or events that could reasonably occur between measurements DO occur. Whether or not this is true, a mathematical description of this crazy idea led to the most powerful expression of quantum mechanics ever devised: Richard Feynman’s path integral formulation.
