Forty-one years after it launched into space, NASA’s Voyager 2 probe has exited our solar bubble and entered the region between stars. Its twin, Voyager 1, made this historic crossing in 2012. Team Finds Evidence For Carbon-Rich Surface On Ceres

A team led by Southwest Research Institute has concluded that the surface of dwarf planet Ceres is rich in organic matter. Data from NASA's Dawn spacecraft indicate that Ceres's surface may contain several times the concentration of carbon than is present in the most carbon-rich, primitive meteorites found on Earth.
"Ceres is like a chemical factory," said SwRI's Dr. Simone Marchi, a principal scientist who was the lead author of research published in Nature Astronomy today. "Among inner solar system bodies, Ceres' has a unique mineralogy, which appears to contain up to 20 percent carbon by mass in its near surface. Our analysis shows that carbon-rich compounds are intimately mixed with products of rock-water interactions, such as clays."

Waves Recorded By NASA’s Van Allen Probes

On Oct. 26, 2012, NASA’s Van Allen Probes recorded these chorus waves in space above Earth. These waves are created by electrons spiraling along magnetic field lines around Earth. They then interact with other electrons in the region to accelerate them to higher speeds or push them into Earth’s upper atmosphere. This video shows the data from Electric and Magnetic Field Instrument Suite and Integrated Science, the instrument aboard the Van Allen Probes that recorded the sounds. A range of frequencies are shown low to high along the vertical axis and the strength of the signal at each frequency and time are color coded — blue being weak and red being strong.

On May 4, 2017, NASA’s Van Allen Probes recorded these whistler waves in space above Earth. Waves like these are created by lightening discharges in Earth’s atmosphere. The signals bounce back and forth along Earth’s magnetic field lines, creating the unique whistling tone. This video shows the data from Electric and Magnetic Field Instrument Suite and Integrated Science, the instrument aboard the Van Allen Probes that recorded the sounds. A range of frequencies are shown low to high along the vertical axis and the strength of the signal at each frequency and time are color coded — blue being weak and red being strong.

BepiColombo: Mercury's Mysteries

BepiColombo, Europe’s first mission to Mercury, launched on 20 October 2018. The spacecraft began its seven year journey by unfurling antennas and solar arrays, taking a few selfies and deploying a three metre magnetometer boom. The spacecraft, a joint mission between ESA and the Japanese space agency JAXA, will soon engage its solar propulsion engine but meanwhile scientists are busy preparing for BepiColombo’s arrival in 2025.
