Earth Between Neptune & The Sun

Tonight (10th September 2019) the planet Neptune will be at opposition, the yearly event where Earth passes directly between Neptune and our Sun.
At around the same time Neptune passes opposition it also makes its closest approach to the Earth. It's brighter than any other time of the year and is visible throughout the night. Its disc will be wonderfully lit up by our sun to a magnitude of approximately 7.8.
This is the best time to grab your telescope or high-powered binoculars and enjoy the view.

Two Newly Found Asteroids Just Flew Past Earth at 0.1 and 0.5 Lunar Distances

The region between Earth and the Moon has been busy this month. Not only one but 3 asteroids passed very close to our planet. Two of them flew past Earth on September 5 and 7 at 0.1 and 0.5 lunar distances. The third asteroid designated 2019 RQ flew past Earth at 0.3 lunar distances on September 2, 2019.
The asteroids were only discovered a few hours before their closest approach to our planet.
41 known asteroids flew past Earth within 1 lunar distance since the start of the year and 3 so far this month.

What does a black hole look like? We now know, and have observed black holes in multiple ways. Measuring black hole properties gives us insight into the stars they came from and the galaxies they reside in.
Black holes are fascinating: the densest objects in the universe from which no light can escape. How do you observe something that doesn't emit any light? The first picture of the shadow of a black hole was only taken this year, but astronomers have been studying them for decades through the effect they have on their surroundings. In this lecture we will go over the many methods astronomers use to search for and investigate the properties of black holes of all kinds, from the small ones in our cosmic backyard to the monsters in the centers of galaxies.

Dr. Kimberly Ennico Smith is a NASA research astrophysicist at Ames Research Center. She is multidisciplinary in her approach to space instruments, telescopes, and mission concepts. She has designed and built infrared airborne and space telescope cameras and spectrometers, tested detectors in laboratories and particle accelerators, designed low-cost suborbital instruments and built lunar payloads. Most recently, she served as deputy Project Scientist leading the calibration of the New Horizons Pluto fly-by mission and Project Scientist for the flying infrared observatory SOFIA.
Studies of our universe through multi-wavelength “eyes”, enabled by placing telescopes on mountain tops, on airplanes, on balloons, to rockets and satellites in orbit, has revealed a beautiful, mystifying, dynamic, and rather extraordinary place.
Our Earth’s atmosphere no longer became a limiting filter to our observing the light emitted, absorbed, and reflected from the universe in which we live.
Infrared light, in particular, by penetrating deep into dark clouds allows us to capture the birth of stars. Through sensing colder temperatures, we use infrared light to measure the re-emission of the dust left behind by violent supernovae stellar deaths. The infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum is also home to a rich set of atomic, ionic, and molecular transitions, allowing for in-depth studies of the makeup of and environments of the gas and dust from which stars and planets form.
This talk takes us on a local tour of our Milky Way and highlights recent observations by our many “infrared eyes on the sky.”
Will these new observations get us closer to learning how our universe works and where we come from?

KELT-9b is the hottest alien Exoplanet ever discovered.
KELT-9b is known as a hot Jupiter, a gas giant Exoplanet orbiting unusually close to its parent star, with KELT-9b being triple the mass and twice the size of Jupiter.
This bizarre Exoplanet was discovered using the Transit method, which detects distant Exoplanets by measuring the slight dimming of a star as an orbiting planet passes between it and the Earth.

Chilean Navy UFO Footage

On November 11th, 2014, the Chilean Navy captured a UFO on video releasing some sort of gas or vapor into the atmosphere. This footage went viral and still there is no explanation of what this could be.
