During late February, Venus will be swinging away from the sun while Jupiter and the stars are carried sunward by Earth's orbital motion. In the western sky during early evening on Tuesday, Feb. 28 the two planets will shine in a close conjunction with brighter Venus positioned less than a thumb's diameter below (or 1.3 degrees to the celestial west of) Jupiter, allowing them to share the view in a backyard telescope (green circle).

Roscosmos and SpaceX Crew Ships Near Launch as International Space Station Prepares
http://scitechdaily.com/images/Soyuz...es-777x518.jpg
The Soyuz MS-22 rocket launches to the International Space Station with Expedition 68 astronaut Frank Rubio of NASA, and cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin of Roscosmos aboard, Wednesday, September 21, 2022, from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan
While working on space physics and household maintenance tasks, four Expedition 68 crew members are also preparing for their return to Earth next month. Meanwhile, two crew ships, one from Roscosmos and one from SpaceX, are nearing their launch to the International Space Station (ISS).
NASA Flight Engineers Nicole Mann and Josh Cassada reviewed their upcoming departure procedures today ahead of next month’s planned return to Earth inside the SpaceX Crew Dragon Endurance. The duo were joined by Flight Engineers Koichi Wakata of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Anna Kikina of Roscosmos as they looked over the steps they will take during their homebound flight.
The quartet trained on a computer to undock Endurance from the Harmony module, reenter Earth’s atmosphere, and parachute to a safe splashdown in the waters off the coast of Florida. Mann will command Crew Dragon Endurance with Cassada piloting the vehicle as Wakata and Kikina remain seated to either side of the astronauts. They launched to the station on the SpaceX Crew-5 mission on October 5, 2022.
Their replacements will arrive as the Crew-6 mission after it launches on Monday at 1:45 a.m. EST from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. NASA astronauts Stephen Bowen and Warren “Woody” Hoburg will be the respective commander and pilot of Crew Dragon Endeavour. They will be flanked inside the vehicle by astronaut Sultan Alneyadi of the UAE (United Arab Emirates) and cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev of Roscosmos. The foursome will dock to the space-facing port of Harmony module at 2:29 a.m. on Tuesday and live and work aboard the orbital outpost for six months conducting critical space research.

Egypt Releases Photos of Stunningly Preserved 52-foot-long Book of the Dead Papyrus
Egyptian officials have released photos of an ancient scroll, the 52-foot-long (16 meters) Book of the Dead papyrus recently discovered in Saqqara. The images show ancient illustrations of gods and scenes from the afterlife, as well as text on the document, which is more than 2,000 years old.
Archaeologists discovered the Book of the Dead papyrus within a coffin in a tomb near the Step Pyramid of Djoser and announced the discovery on Jan. 14 for Egyptian Archaeologists Day, but this is the first time they've released images of the scroll to the public.
The 52-foot-long scroll was found at Saqqara in May 2022. It contains chapters from the Book of the Dead. It was recently restored and translated into Arabic and is now on display at The Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

The papyrus was found rolled up in a coffin belonging to a man named Ahmose (not to be confused with a pharaoh who lived in earlier times). The man's name is mentioned in the papyrus about 260 times, the researchers said. He lived around 300 B.C., near the beginning of the Ptolemaic dynasty, a dynasty of pharaohs descended from one of Alexander the Great's generals.

The unrolled papyrus is seen here. It was written in black and red ink, and the quality of the writing indicates that it was written by a professional, researchers said.

This close-up shows a creature, possibly Ammit, sitting before Osiris. In ancient Egyptian mythology, the heart of the deceased is weighed against the feather of Maat, a god associated with truth, justice and order. If the person's bad deeds in life were great, their heart would be heavier than the feather, and Ammit would devour the deceased.

Hybrid ‘Super Pigs’ are Invading the U.S. After Running Wild in Canada
https://bgr.com/wp-content/uploads/2...resize=768,512
A hybrid cross between wild boars and domestic pigs are invading the United States. These “super pigs,” which first spread through Canada are now making their way down into the northern U.S. While it isn’t unusual for animals to cross national lines, the problem lies in the dangers that these feral swine pose to the ecosystem in the areas they are invading.
The root of the problem, according to a Field and Stream report, comes from the early 2000s when farms for wild boars loosed their hybrid super pigs after the market for farmed boars fell dramatically. The animals continued to breed and survive harsh weather conditions, giving rise to even more of the super pigs that they had been brought to Canada to create. In less than 20 years, the population has exploded.
As it stands, roughly 620,000 square miles in Canada is considered home to these wild super pigs, with more miles stretching into the United States as they move south. For native species in those areas, though, the issue is terrifying. That’s because these wild hogs feed on anything. Not only will they take down whitetail deer, but they’ll chow down on anything that crosses their path, including small birds.
While the population estimates aren’t definitive, experts told Field and Stream that the issue is likely too far gone to eradicate the wild super pigs completely. Instead, Canada and the areas that the United States will need to find ways to mitigate the spread as much as possible. It’s sure to be a difficult mission, but one that could prove the difference between life and death for some species in those areas.

How the World’s Deadliest Mushroom is Spreading Across the U.S.
http://dnyuz.com/wp-content/uploads/...s-750x375.jpeg
The world’s deadliest mushroom has been spreading across the United States faster than expected. The “death cap” mushroom, which is more formally called Amanita phalloides, is extremely toxic to humans. The species originated in Europe, but has quickly been finding a new home all across the U.S.
Up until now, scientists were baffled at how quickly the world’s deadliest mushroom was setting up shop. However, new insights into the death cap have shown just how it gets its roots down so quickly.
According to a study from researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the death cap mushroom can produce spores using the chromosomes of a single individual. That means the world’s deadliest mushroom doesn’t need a mate in order to reproduce. As such, it only takes one of these mushrooms setting up shop to quickly start spreading around as much as possible.
Because of their quick spread across the U.S., scientists recommend keeping a close eye on whether death caps are in your area before you go hunting for mushrooms of any kind.

Flying Saucers to Mind Control: 24 Declassified Military & CIA Secrets
Bite-size bios of all the programs you've heard of, and some you may not have. Manhattan Project, M-K Ultra, Doctor Zhivago, Operation Gladio, Northwoods, Iran Flight 655, more.
Project 1794 was initiated in the 1950s, and a team of engineers was tasked with building a disc-shape vehicle capable of traveling at supersonic speeds at high altitudes. The declassified documents reveal plans for the plane to reach a top speed of Mach 4 (four times the speed of sound), and reach an altitude of 100,000 feet (30,480 meters). The project's estimated cost was more than $3 million, which in today's dollars would be more than $26 million.

A report from 1967 shows that the CIA spent millions of dollars in an attempt to train domesticated cats to spy on the Soviet Union. Yes, you read that correctly. Nicknamed Acoustic Kitty, the program involved implanting electronic spying equipment into live cats and then training them to "eavesdrop" on unsuspecting Cold War rivals.

Crescent Moon Occultation by Fefo Bouvier

On February 22, a young Moon shared the western sky at sunset with bright planets Venus and Jupiter along the ecliptic plane. The beautiful celestial conjunction was visible around planet Earth. But from some locations Jupiter hid for a while, occulted by the crescent lunar disk. The Solar System's ruling gas giant was captured here just before it disappeared behind the Moon's dark edge, seen over the Río de la Plata at Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay. In the serene river and skyscape Venus is not so shy, shining brightly closer to the horizon through the fading twilight. This week Venus and Jupiter will appear even closer in your evening sky.
