War on Journalism: US seizes Scott Ritter's Passport

As a somewhat confused outsider - listening to the video above, it seems several legal violations occurred.

However - is not the Patriot Act still in effect in the US? And under that Act people, as I understood it, deemed "Information terrorists" - a new category along with the original "Enemy combatant" - have no rights? So the legal violations would not actually be violations when dealing with people designated "enemy combatants/information terrorists" under the Patriot Act?

Would appreciate any clarity on that question from anyone more familiar with the US legal system than I am.

WOW! Thanks Bill. Well worth the hour I spent to listen to this. This is quite a story about criminality, but it isn't Scott that's the criminal - it is the U.S. government military industrial complex. What they won't do to destroy the life of a patriotic marine like Scott Ritter and destroy his family. His story would make an epic movie, a movie that the CIA and FBI would do everything in their power to prevent being made.

“The disappointment I felt when my government deprived me of the opportunity to come to St. Petersburg in person was great. However, thanks to the wonders of modern technology, my voice will not be drowned out by those who disagree with the messages it conveys,” Ritter said.

On June 3, the ex-US Marine Corps intelligence officer was removed from a plane to Russia by CBP officers who seized his passport, claiming they were acting “by orders” from the US State Department.

US government ‘has declared war on me’ – Scott Ritter
Former US Marine turned journalist Scott Ritter has accused the US government of committing an “act of intimidation” against him for his journalistic work after federal agents and state police executed a search warrant on his house in New York State on Wednesday.

In a video statement on his Telegram channel on Thursday, Ritter, who is also a former UN weapons inspector, said that the warrant was based upon suspicion that he had violated the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

The authorities appear to be “primarily concerned” about his “relationship” with RT and the news agency Sputnik, he added.

According to Ritter, the FBI agents accused him of working “on behalf of the Russian government” and receiving “directions” from the two Russian outlets while being compensated for his contributions.

Ritter stressed that he was not a foreign agent and pointed out that he gets compensation from “any journalistic entity” he provides content for.

Ritter also dismissed as “absurd in the extreme” the accusation that his articles and podcasts were “designed to manipulate the opinion of the American people on behalf of the Russian government.”

He called the raid “an act of intimidation by the US government designed to have a chilling effect” and to discourage him from further cooperation with the Russian-based media outlets, Ritter said.

”There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that I will back down because I’m doing nothing wrong,” he stated, adding that he is “an American citizen, holding my government accountable and exercising the rights given to me by the Constitution.”

Ritter went on to say that the US government has “declared war” on him, on his ability to write, to speak, and to interact with the American people and the broader international audience.

”It’s not a war I plan on losing,” Ritter concluded.

Ritter is a former US Marine Corps major who served as a UN weapons inspector in Iraq during the 1990s. He opposed the 2003 US invasion, insisting that Saddam Hussein’s government did not have weapons of mass destruction, as Washington claimed at the time.

According to the US Department of Justice, the US Foreign Agents Registration Act “requires certain agents” to disclose their relationship with “foreign principals,” thus “informing the public on the identity of persons engaging in political activities on behalf of foreign governments.”

Similar legislation adopted in Russia has been harshly criticized in the West, branded as “oppressive” and a “crackdown on opposition.”

The FBI has accused me of behaving as a foreign agent operating in violation of the Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA). They focused on an article I published on my Substack on February 28, 2023. They claim I was directed by Russia to publish this article.

This is absurd. I did meet with Russian officials at the Russian Embassy on February 20, where I briefed them on travel I was planning conducting in Russia in the coming months. The purpose of this briefing was to make sure the Russian government did not misconstrue my trip as a cover for espionage—I was, after all, a former intelligence officer with a history of work in the former Soviet Union.

I also spoke in depth about the importance of this trip as a means to empower myself with the knowledge and information necessary to combat the problem of Russophobia in America today.

I informed the Russian officials that I planned on addressing Russophobia in my writing and talks.

The FBI is under the impression that, in pursuing this topic, I was somehow being directed and/or controlled by the Russian government.

I would direct their, and the broader audience, direction to an article I published in Consortium News on February 14, 2023–six days before the Russian Embassy meeting.

He had been accused of 'taking direction' from Russia (and therefore needing to be registered as a 'foreign agent', if he was indeed 'taking direction'). But he's not registered as a foreign agent, and had not been 'taking direction' from anyone anywhere. He's merely been a journalist.

Good vid, including his toned-down presentation. About his view of Ritter, good that it is posted here on Avalon, for all the Ritter fans to scratch their heads about. Makes “blind outrage” at his home-raid, a somewhat less tenable reaction.

But Matt and Winston outed George Galloway years ago, and that China+Russia shill still has a sizeable following here. As I have suggested previously, “the enemy of my enemy, is my friend” is seemingly at play.

Agreed--my thoughts exactly...The CCP invests a great deal of time and energy into propaganda, much more than most realize, and it does more damage than most can imagine.

Hi Bill. Lots of good talk by Ritter, and some by the Judge.

Scott spins a great tale, good talker with heaps of experience, but his enthusiastic and detailed premonition of the Hezballers’ bloody slaughter of Israelis … set me back … on my heels, so to speak. This guy has a serious hate for Israel, and the US, enough that he talks up Iran and China and Russia. Methinks he is no better than a religious extremest.

Don’t get me wrong, I am aware of many reasons to condemn each of the countries which I’ve mentioned. I just think, that glorifying the blood-letting of a perceived enemy, obviates trust about the morality of the speaker. So I’ll trust him less, because morality is important to me.
