Russia and India no longer need US dollar – BRICS president
Russia and India don’t need the US dollar in trade, having turned to national currencies to conduct mutual settlements, BRICS International Forum President Purnima Anand told reporters on Thursday.
“We have implemented the mechanism of mutual settlements in rubles and rupees, and there is no need for our countries to use the dollar in mutual settlements. And today a similar mechanism of mutual settlements in rubles and yuan is being developed by China,” she said.
“That means that the BRICS countries are opening up to Russia, offering the opportunity for the country to overcome the consequences of sanctions,” Anand added, as quoted by RIA news agency.
The BRICS president said mutual trade between India and Russia had grown fivefold over the past 40 years. Moscow supplies a rapidly growing volume of oil to India, and in return gets large quantities of agricultural products, textiles, medicines and other products.
Anand also noted that New Delhi considers itself a neutral party in the current sanctions war between the West and Russia, and despite sanctions pressure, will continue cooperation with Moscow “in any areas where necessary.”

“When Russia’s military operation in Ukraine began, naturally there was pressure on India to stop importing Russian oil. But the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had to reject this pressure. The Russian side was assured that supplies would not be stopped and the sanctions regime would in no way affect the relationship between our countries,” the forum head stressed.

Putin orders Russian military to boost manpower
The size of the Russian military is set to increase to 1.15 million troops next year, in line with a decree that President Vladimir Putin signed on Thursday.
The document, published on the government’s website, adds 137,000 to the ranks of the Armed Forces from January 1, 2023.
It also instructs the cabinet to allocate the necessary funds for the expansion.
The move comes amid the Russian military operation in Ukraine, launched in late February.
Moscow sent troops into the neighboring country six months ago, citing Kiev’s failure to implement the Minsk agreements, designed to give the regions of Donetsk and Lugansk special status within the Ukrainian state. The protocols, brokered by Germany and France, were first signed in 2014. Former Ukrainian president Pyotr Poroshenko has since admitted that Kiev’s main goal was to use the ceasefire to buy time and “create powerful armed forces.”

In February 2022, the Kremlin recognized the Donbass republics as independent states and demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join any Western military bloc. Kiev insists the Russian offensive was completely unprovoked.

Security systems activated at Zaporozhye nuclear power plant – officials
Security systems have been activated at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant after a power outage, which temporarily left the facility without electricity, members of the Russia-backed administration in the Ukrainian region have claimed.
The plant has since been connected to an alternative source of power, according to officials.
The blackout is said to have been caused by massive wildfires in the area, which were started by Ukrainian shelling, theу said.

Fires, which have engulfed parts of the steppe and woods surrounding the city of Energodar, led to short-circuits in the local grid, leaving not only parts of Zaporozhye region without power, but also the neighboring Kherson region.
The head of the pro-Russian military-civil administration of Energodar, Yevgeny Balitski, has been quoted by media as saying: “according to preliminary information, because of massive shelling by the Ukrainian armed forces, which has continued since last night, fields and undergrowth caught fire. This led to a short-circuit in the grid.”
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s state-owned Energoatom company, which is the operator of the power plant, has issued a statement saying Russia’s actions have “resulted in the complete disconnection of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant from power supply – for the first time in history.”
The Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant is the largest facility of its kind in Europe. It was seized by Russian forces in early March, soon after Moscow launched its military offensive against Kiev. Since then, the country’s National Guard and Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Defense Troops have been guarding the site, with Ukrainian staff continuing to operate the plant.
Over the past month, Russia has repeatedly accused Ukrainian forces of shelling the nuclear power plant, damaging some of the equipment and buildings. Moscow has warned that Kiev is risking a nuclear incident on a similar scale as the 1986 Chernobyl disaster or even worse.
Ukraine, in turn, strongly denies its military is targeting the facility, and accuses Russian troops of deliberately shelling the plant to frame pro-Kiev forces. Moreover, Ukrainian officials and some of their Western supporters claim that Russia is using the plant as a military base, hiding its personnel and hardware on its grounds.
Russian officials, for their part, have repeatedly called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to send inspectors to the facility, saying that such a mission would corroborate Moscow’s version of events.

NATO chief outlines Arctic expansion
NATO will increase its military presence in the Arctic on account of Russia and China posing a “strategic challenge” to the bloc there, Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg argued, in an op-ed ahead of his visit to the Canadian north.
The Arctic is “the gateway to the North Atlantic, hosting vital trade, transport and communication links between North America and Europe. Ensuring freedom of navigation and unfettered access is essential to keep our economies strong and our people safe,” Stoltenberg wrote in the article, published on Wednesday in Canada’s Globe and Mail.
Due to the “rapidly warming climate,” much of the Arctic will be ice-free in the summer, which unlocks “opportunities for shipping routes, natural resources and economic development” that can be exploited by “authoritarian regimes” like Russia and China, Stoltenberg argued.
Russia is beefing up its Northern Fleet, while China is planning a “Polar Silk Road” to Europe via the Arctic, building the world’s biggest icebreaker and declaring itself a “near-Arctic state,” the Norwegian former politician wrote.

To counter this, Stoltenberg wrote, the “defensive alliance” will invest in “new air and maritime capabilities,” conduct more exercises like Trident Juncture and Cold Response, and bolster its presence in the High North overall. The Cold Response drills in Norway, which took place in March and April, involved troops from 27 countries and were the largest NATO Arctic exercise since the 1980s.
Stoltenberg also revealed that he would be visiting the Cold Lake airbase and the Cambridge Bay early-warning radar site in Nunavut as part of his Arctic tour with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
While Stoltenberg talked up the alleged Sino-Russian threat in the region, once Finland and Sweden formally join the alliance, seven out of eight Arctic Council members will belong to NATO. All of them have suspended their activities in the consulting body earlier this year, citing the conflict in Ukraine. Russia, the only non-NATO member of the council, accounts for 53% of the Arctic coastline and more than half of the region’s permanent population.
Russia has warned against the growing militarization of the Arctic, saying that Finland and Sweden joining NATO created a risk of turning the region into a “theater of military operations.”

Ukrainian Army attacks Zaporizhzhia NPP seven times in 24 hours
In the past 24 hours, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have launched seven large-caliber attacks on the area of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, the Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
"The shelling was carried out from the firing positions of the Ukrainian forces in the areas of Nikopol, Marhanets, Vyschetarasivka and Chervonogryhorivka, located on the opposite bank of the Kakhovka reservoir. The retaliatory artillery fire of the Russian Armed Forces suppressed the enemy's firepower”, – the ministry said.
Russian Permanent Representative Vasily Nebenzya during the UN Security Council meeting, the main topic of which is the threat to the Zaporizhzhia NPP, has already noted that the nuclear safety situation at the plant has deteriorated even more in recent weeks. He also said that the consequence of Kyiv's shelling of the ZNPP is the West's criminal connivance.
Nebenzya also reiterated that Russia is ready to provide the IAEA (the International Atomic Energy Agency) with evidence that Moscow is not placing heavy weapons on the territory of the Zaporizhzhia plant.
The plant and nearby Enerhodar are regularly shelled by the Ukrainian military that could eventually lead to disaster. Authorities in Zaporizhzhia region have already developed an evacuation plan in case of an accident at the nuclear power plant as the Ukrainian Armed Forces could strike both the Kakhovskaya HPP (hydroelectric power plant), which operates a cooling system, and the nuclear fuel storage facility.
The Stirol Chemical plant was also shelled again

- Roger Waters’ Name Added To Ukrainian “Kill List”:
For more than a decade an anonymous group in Ukraine has maintained a website listing names and, where they have them, addresses and phone numbers of individuals they term “enemies” of Ukraine. A number of the listed individuals have wound up the target of attacks, some of whom were killed. Now Pink Floyd bass player and noted critic of NATO’s role in Ukraine Roger Waters finds he’s been added to the so-called “kill” list. Jimmy and American comedian Roger Waters discuss the peril Roger Waters may be facing as a result of his truth-telling about NATO and the Ukraine War.
- ANOTHER $3 Billion Given To Ukraine:
For those who appreciate Alexander Mercouris, starting from 31:25 in his video update for today (lasting about 15 mins) you can hear him more energized, emphatic, angered and emotional than at any time I've yet heard him. He's not lost for words, but at one or two points he comes close.
This really is worth listening to. His outrage is about what are now becoming the Ukrainian killing fields — my term, not his. And the responsibility for this lies with the west, not with Russia.
