Arab tribes seize control of US-occupied Syrian towns in large-scale assault
Tribal forces have undertaken a rebellion against US-backed Kurds in Syria since late last year

A coalition of Syrian Arab tribes seized several towns from US-backed Kurdish forces in the countryside of eastern Syria’s Deir Ezzor governorate on 7 August.

Tribesmen launched the “largest” attack on Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) sites since the start of the Arab tribal rebellion against the US-backed militia last year, Sputnik reported, adding that the attack took place “under the cover of artillery and mortar shells.”

“Violent clashes have been ongoing since the early morning hours between the forces of the SDF-linked Deir Ezzor and Hajin Military Councils on the one hand, and the attacking groups of the ‘Army of Tribes’ coalition on the other, in the vicinity of the towns of Abu Hamam, Dhiban, Al-Lattwa, Al-Kashkiya, and Gharanij,” the news outlet’s correspondent said.

The clashes were concentrated in the towns of Al-Sabha and Al-Tayana, east of Deir Ezzor, the correspondent added.

The Arab tribes used RPGs and machine guns against the SDF during the onset of the attack, according to Al Mayadeen.

“SDF militants imposed a complete curfew in the towns under their control in the Deir Ezzor countryside, after the arrival of large military reinforcements from Hasakah and Raqqa, coinciding with a wide search operation in the villages surrounding the areas of clashes,” the Sputnik correspondent went on to say.

Residents told Sputnik that many people were displaced as a result and that three civilians were killed while seven others were injured due to the fighting. Local sources also told the outlet that at least 10 SDF militants were taken captive by tribal fighters, who also seized large amounts of light and heavy weapons.

The SDF and the tribal coalition also took some casualties.

“Arab tribal fighters managed to damage three Hummer military vehicles in the vicinity of the American base in the Al-Omar oilfield,” Sputnik said.

The SDF imposed security belts and closed roads around several areas in Hasakah, northeastern Syria.

“American helicopters targeted a group of tribal forces using machine guns near the banks of the Euphrates River in the town of Dhiban, east of Deir Ezzor,” Al Mayadeen’s correspondent reported on Tuesday.

The US army also deployed reinforcements to the vicinity of its base in the Al-Omar oilfield.

Sheikh Ibrahim al-Hafel, who led the tribal rebellion against the US-backed armed group last year, was quoted by Al Mayadeen as saying on 7 August: “We will not accept submission to the SDF militants … [the tribes and] their sons have the right to liberate their areas from these militants.”

Arab tribes launched their rebellion against the SDF in late August last year, with fierce clashes raging for several weeks afterward.

Despite brief instances of de-escalation, tensions and armed clashes between the two sides have remained ongoing. At the time, it was said that the tribal forces were coordinating with and receiving military aid and training from the Syrian Arab Army (SAA).

“After continuous training received by the tribal forces during the past months, the tribes led by Sheikh Ibrahim Al-Hafel launched a violent attack on the largest in the cities and towns of Deir Ezzor, and took control of several military points in the city of Al-Busayrah and the towns of Ibriha, Al-Harijiya, Al-Tayana, Abu Hamam, Gharanij, Al-Kashkiya, Dhiban, Al-Latwa neighborhood, and all the riverside points,” Syrian journalist Mohammad Dabaa said on 7 August.

The tribal assault came a month after the SDF released hundreds of ISIS fighters from their prison camps in northern Syria.

The Air Force has as well carried out a specific military operation targeting the American destroyer "Cole" in the Gulf of Aden with a number of drones, and thanks to Allah the operation achieved its goals successfully.

The naval forces carried out a specific military operation targeting the American destroyer "Laboon" with a number of ballistic missiles.

The targeting of the two American destroyers took place while they were crossing the Yemeni Armed Forces' operations zone heading towards the northern Red Sea, within the continues American military protection that is being provided to the Israeli enemy.

As a result of the operations the two destroyers have completely failed to confront the missiles and drones, and the success of the drones and missiles to achieve their goals, thanks be to Allah.

The Yemeni Armed Forces consider all US military movements in the naval operations area as a supportive actions for the Israeli enemy and as a hostile activities, and will not hesitate, with the help of Allah Almighty, to deter those actions with all available means.

The Yemeni Armed Forces call on all the peoples of our Arab and Islamic nation to stand in solidarity with Palestine, Gaza and the martyred leader Ismail Haniyeh, by taking practical actions to reject the US military movements and reject all forms of support for the Israeli enemy.

The operations of the Yemeni Armed Forces within the battle of the promised conquest and the holy jihad will continue until the aggression stops and the siege on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip is lifted.

Hamas confirms Gaza ceasefire talks will continue under Sinwar
Yahya Sinwar is up to date with the negotiation process and remains in contact with Hamas’ political office despite leading the war against Israeli forces inside Gaza, a Hamas official told Al Jazeera

Senior Hamas official Osama Hamdan told Anadolu Agency (AA) on 7 August that negotiations for a ceasefire and captive exchange agreement will continue under the leadership of Yahya Sinwar, who was selected a day earlier as the new head of the resistance movement’s political bureau.

“The negotiation issue was managed by leadership decisions, and Sinwar was not far from the negotiation process, but rather present in its details,” Hamdan said.

“The negotiation process will continue, and the problem in the process is not the change that took place in the Hamas movement, but rather in Israel and [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu, and in America, which was not sincere neither in its mediation nor in its attempt to push for a ceasefire,” he added.

Hamdan went on to say that Sinwar “has a high degree of flexibility in managing public affairs and preserves the rights of the Palestinian people.”

Sinwar is currently inside the besieged Gaza Strip and remains in contact with resistance fighters on the ground, while being pursued by Israeli forces.

Despite the challenging conditions, he remains capable of running Hamas’ political affairs while leading the fight against Israeli forces in the strip, Hamdan confirmed to Al Jazeera on 6 August, adding that Sinwar has been in contact with the political office since the start of the war.

His election on 6 August came after Israel assassinated Hamas politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on 31 July.

“The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas announces the selection of Commander Yahya Sinwar as the head of the political bureau of the movement, succeeding the martyr Commander Ismail Haniyeh, may [God] have mercy on him,” Hamas said in a statement on Tuesday.

Israeli officials told the Times of Israel on 5 August that ceasefire talks would be “on hold” until after Iran’s expected retaliation to Haniyeh’s killing on its soil last month.

The negotiations have repeatedly faltered over the last few months over Tel Aviv’s insistence on continuing the war after the captives are exchanged.

After extensive and in-depth consultations and deliberations within its leadership institutions, Hamas has announced that Yahya Sinwar, the Movement's leader in the Gaza Strip, will head its political bureau, succeeding the martyred leader Ismail Haniyeh.

The decision, serving as the first response to the assassination of the martyr Haniyeh, generated significant positive reactions among resistance supporters in Palestine and abroad. Undoubtedly, it also weighed heavily on the occupation entity, intensifying the state of anxiety as they awaited retaliation for the assassination.

So, what are the implications and potential consequences of this step?

'Soleimani's friend, a believer of the support front'

In a statement to Al Mayadeen, Palestinian writer and political analyst Ibrahim al-Madhoun stated that Hamas delivered a clear message to the occupation: its leader stands resolutely at the heart of the battle. He further highlighted that this move challenges an unjust world that disregards the weak and only acknowledges the powerful.

Al-Madhoun pointed out that Sinwar had said he was in daily contact with the martyr Qassem Soleimani, indicating his comprehensive strategic vision and commitment to strengthening, organizing, and repairing relations with the Resistance Axis. He also emphasized that Sinwar believed that Operation Al-Aqsa Flood would not succeed without the support of the fronts.

Al-Madhoun asserts that Sinwar, often described as a "military general who never attended military academies" and the "Defense Minister of Hamas who meticulously prepared for the day of the Flood," is also a formidable political and strategic leader. His speeches underscore the deliberate and significant political weight of his words, reflecting his skill in choosing them with precision.

'Response to Netanyahu's obstinacy'

From this perspective, selecting Sinwar at this specific juncture can be seen as a direct response to Netanyahu's obstinacy. Despite Haniyeh's considerable flexibility in negotiations—where he proposed innovative ideas and sought to reach an agreement while adhering to fundamental principles and the legitimate rights of Palestinians—Netanyahu chose to assassinate him. This choice underscores Hamas's stance against Netanyahu's intransigence.

According to the Israeli Broadcasting Authority, this choice sends a clear message that Sinwar is alive and that the Movement's leadership in the Gaza Strip remains strong, dynamic, and resilient. The choice of Sinwar, whom "Israel" failed to undermine, also sends a message that the policy of pressuring the Movement by targeting its families or assassinating its leaders will not weaken it.

He emphasized that the presence of a Hamas leader in Gaza is a testament to the resistance, signaling that each new day in Gaza will continue to be Palestinian.

Talib affirmed that the Resistance remains fully capable of leading the Movement from within Gaza and that the claims of its political and military collapse, as propagated by the occupation, are baseless.

Talib reiterated that Sinwar was the first to establish a committee for prisoners within the jails to represent all prisoners and that he was instrumental in crafting the 2014 agreement following the aggression. He also played a key role in reestablishing and strengthening relations with all countries in the resistance axis. Talib highlighted these achievements as proof of Sinwar's political acumen, demonstrating his ability to lead the Movement and manage Gaza effectively to achieve its goals, alongside his expertise and resilience in the field.

He emphasized that selecting Sinwar conveys enduring and immediate messages, which the occupation fully comprehends due to its awareness of who Sinwar is.

Talib further highlighted that Sinwar was known for speaking up in the face of the occupation over necessities like a loaf of bread for prisoners and for speaking up when a child was denied a visit from his mother. He treated the prisoners like his own children.

Sinwar's current leadership of the Movement is viewed as "one of the early signs of victory."

'Commitment to Operation Al-Aqsa Flood'

Western media also analyzed the implications of choosing Sinwar.

The Economist stated that if there were any lingering doubts about the distribution of power within Hamas, they were definitively resolved on August 6, when the movement appointed its leader in Gaza and the artist behind the October 7 operation, as its leader.

The magazine considered that this appointment sends a clear signal that "the most radical wing of Hamas is now in charge of the entire movement, which is increasingly coordinating with Iran.

The New York Times saw Hamas' decision to choose Sinwar as a signal that, even 10 months after the start of the war, the Palestinian Movement's leaders remain committed to their decision to attack "Israel" on October 7, 2023.
