Hamas official killed in Israeli strike on vehicle in Southern Lebanon
Al Mayadeen correspondent to Southern Lebanon reported on Friday that a drone strike targeted a civilian vehicle in the southern Lebanese city of Sidon.
In a statement, the Hamas Movement announced the martyrdom of official Samer Al-Hajj, who was killed in "a treacherous Zionist raid" in the city of Sidon, southern Lebanon.
Al Mayadeen correspondent reported seeing emergency personnel retrieve a charred body from the vehicle as soldiers secured the area.
In the aftermath of the attack, residents of Ain al-Helweh Palestinian Refugee Camp staged a march in condemnation of "Israel's" aggression.
In January 2024, an Israeli drone strike in Beirut killed Saleh al-Arouri, a top Hamas official. Al Mayadeen's correspondent reported that an Israeli drone targeted the building with three missiles, resulting in the martyrdom of six individuals.

US enlists Cyprus, Jordan, Greece as 'defensive platforms' for Israel: Report
Tel Aviv is anticipating harsh retaliations from Iran and Hezbollah for its recent assassinations in Tehran and Beirut
Washington has enlisted the island nation of Cyprus in its efforts to protect Israel from potential retaliations by Iran and Hezbollah to the recent Israeli attacks on Tehran and Beirut, Lebanese daily Al-Akhbar reported on 9 August.
A US military delegation visited Cyprus this week and held urgent meetings with Cypriot defense and intelligence officials.
“The delegation was accompanied by a logistical, military and security force carrying with it a large amount of equipment, weapons and modern air defense systems, in addition to helicopters,” Al-Akhbar wrote.
Cypriot officials said they had never seen such quantities of weapons before, the report went on to say.
According to the report, the US informed Cyprus that this equipment was “related to tensions in the region” and that the island would serve as “one of the interception platforms against expected attacks from Iran, Yemen and Hezbollah.”
It adds that the UK has reinforced its bases in Cyprus, and has sent experts and air defense equipment to the country.
The UK has two large military bases in Cyprus, which are British sovereign territory and make up 2.5 percent of the island's area.
Germany has also reportedly expressed an intention to deploy naval forces to Cyprus and to assist in evacuations in case of a large-scale war.
“What further confused Cypriot authorities was the US request for joint military drills with American forces on the island’s land and seas … drills do not happen suddenly, but rather require a program that is prepared at least a year in advance, not 48 hours in advance,” Al-Akhbar said.
“Cypriot officials have been keen to communicate with … the axis of resistance, especially Hezbollah, to convey the message that what is happening ‘is happening against their will, and that they do not want to involve their country in any war.’ They expressed their fear that the island could become an arena for a confrontation with Iran, Hezbollah, and even Ansarallah.”
Yemen’s army and Ansarallah resistance movement is also preparing a response to the Israeli attack on Hodeidah port last month.
The Al-Akhbar report states that these messages are unlikely to change anything in the event of a wide-scale war, given that Cypriot authorities are also coordinating directly with Tel Aviv.
“Opening Cypriot airports and bases to the Israeli enemy to target Lebanon would mean that the Cypriot government is part of the war, and the resistance will deal with it as part of the war,” Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said in a speech in June, warning Cyprus against taking part in an expanded Israeli war on Lebanon.
Cyprus and Israel have stepped up military cooperation in recent years as part of a joint declaration signed in 2017 and have also carried out several joint military and naval exercises. In 2022, the two states carried out joint military exercises on the island nation’s territory. Cyprus denied Tel Aviv’s declaration at the time that the exercises were meant to simulate war inside Lebanon.
Hebrew newspaper Israel Hayom reported on 11 March this year that Israel is seeking to establish a port in the Cypriot city of Larnaca in case the port of Haifa is closed in a war with Hezbollah.
According to the Al-Akhbar report, Greece and Jordan are also deeply involved in Washington’s defensive plans for Israel.
In April, Jordan played a significant role in intercepting Iranian missiles and drones which targeted Israel in response to its destruction of the Iranian consulate in Damascus and the killing of several of its officials that month.
Israel killed Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on 31 July, as he was visiting Iran as a diplomatic guest while attending the inauguration of the country’s new president. A day earlier, Israel killed a top Hezbollah commander in the Lebanese capital, targeting him in a residential building while killing several civilians, including children, in the process.
Hezbollah and Iran have both vowed severe retaliations to the illegal attacks.

US F-22s land in West Asia as Pentagon pledges to 'defend Israel'
The US is deploying military assets to West Asia in hopes of deterring Iran and the Axis of Resistance from retaliating for the assassination of the Hamas political leader in Tehran
US Air Force has deployed stealth F-22 Raptor jets to West Asia in a show of force to deter a retaliatory attack by Iran and its allies in the Axis of Resistance against Israel, Bloomberg reported on 9 August.
Iran and Hezbollah have promised to retaliate for Israel’s assassination of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut late last month.
US Central Command did not disclose how many jets have been deployed or from which airbase they will operate.
The US has airbases in several allied countries in the region, including Turkiye and Qatar.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated on X that “the US F-22 Raptors that arrived in the region today represent one of many efforts to deter aggression, defend Israel and protect US forces in the region.” The post followed his phone call with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
The F-22 Raptor is the Pentagon’s premier fighter designed to down other aircraft, relying on stealth technology, sophisticated maneuvers, and the ability to hold up to eight short- and medium-range air-to-air missiles.
The F-22s send a powerful signal to Iran because “they can operate with impunity in Iranian airspace without Iran being aware,” retired Lieutenant General David Deptula claimed to Bloomberg.
“They can perform not just air-to-air operations but can surreptitiously conduct intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations and have the capacity to deliver bombs as well,” he added.
“This is the biggest crisis deployment of the F-22s” since they went operational in late 2005, according to Rebecca Grant, an airpower analyst with the Lexington Institute. “Deploying F-22s means this is serious, and there’s a chance of big force packages operating in multiple locations and with allies.”
Washington has been beefing up its presence in the region in anticipation of the Resistance Axis’s responses, which could potentially include Iraq’s resistance factions and Yemen’s Ansarallah movement.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the US would maintain the presence of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and ordered more ballistic missiles, defense-capable cruisers, and warships for the region.
After Israel’s killing of Haniyeh and Shukr, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei vowed a “harsh punishment” for Israel.
Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah also warned Tel Aviv: “You do not know which red lines you have crossed.”

This is the next new target. Everybody knows that.
As for the F-22s, that is an interceptor or anti-airplane outfit, which achieves nothing, unless it is an attempt to use it as a missile interceptor.
Nowhere over there is safe for any of that stuff. If I were Qatar, I would want a cease-fire before something messy starts happening to the American bases.

12 Israeli troops injured in Gaza in a day raising toll to 4,284
At least 12 Israeli occupation troops were injured in battles against the Palestinian Resistance in the Gaza Strip in the past day.
The Israeli occupation's military said that 4,284 soldiers and officers were injured in battles since October 7, 2023, 2190 of which were injured during the period coinciding with the Israeli ground invasion of the Gaza Strip.
Moreover, 689 Israeli troops were killed on different fronts since Operation Al-Aqsa Flood was launched, while 639 were dealt critical injuries during battles and 213 soldiers and officers remain hospitalized.
Israeli news website Ynet's correspondent, Chen Artzi Sror, pointed to the rising number of deaths and critical injuries among Israeli troops in the past few weeks on the Northern Front and in the Gaza Strip.
Sror said that the current situation within Israeli communities does not allow the occupation to absorb "thousands of physically and mentally wounded back into the community."

Mounting personnel, systems losses
Israeli personnel losses are mounting in concurrence with equipment and systems losses across all fronts, where at least 500 armored vehicles, including tanks, have been damaged or destroyed since October 7, 2023, according to Maariv.
It also reported that Israeli occupation forces have consumed much more ammunition than was initially expected in the Israeli military command's plans.
The newspaper published the report in late June under completely different circumstances. However, the shortages and losses become even more glaring as the Israeli command brings the possibility of all-out war closer by assassinating Hamas leader martyr Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and Hezbollah commander Fouad Shokor in the Southern Suburbs of Beirut.
In its report, Maariv underlined that the world is currently witnessing an era of "long wars, without resolutions," saying that it is doubtful that the Israeli stockpile of munitions is sufficient enough to withstand such elongated wars of attrition. Stressing that occupation troops are "physically and mentally tired," the newspaper said that in a war with Lebanon, Israeli forces "will not be at their best."

Russian forces commander to meet with SDF, Syrian gov to end tensions
The Commander of the Russian Armed Forces in Syria arrived at the Russian Base in the Qamishli Airbase to meet representatives of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian government, sources told Al Mayadeen Friday.
The meeting is meant to end heightened tensions in the Syrian cities of al-Hasakah and Qamishli in northeastern Syria.
This comes after SDF forces sieged several areas controlled by the Syrian Arab Army in northeastern Syria, where the majority of the region is under the control of the US-backed SDF, except for a few strategic enclaves.
The SDF siege has been ongoing for the past three days and is affecting the movement of Russian forces in Qamishli.
The US-backed SDF made the move after it accused the Syrian government of backing local tribes and clans that attacked its positions in the oil-rich Deir Ezzor governorate. The SDF has also arrested several Syrian Arab Army officers and soldiers outside the enclaves, in an attempt to exert pressure on tribal forces and prevent further attacks on their positions in the countryside.

Arab tribes reject SDF US presence
Arab tribes launched a wide-scale offensive, marking the second most severe offensive by the tribes since September 2023, with the aim of gaining full control over the Deir Ezzor countryside.
Although the SDF commands a far superior force than the Arab tribes and is expected to take back control of the liberated areas, the aim of the attack is to affirm the tribes' rejection of SDF and US forces' presence in the area.
The aim of the attack "is not territorial control but to affirm the tribes' rejection of the SDF and US forces' presence in the area, their control over oil and gas, and their influence on civil and military decisions," Al Mayadeen's sources added, stressing that the attack "is a form of popular resistance against this presence, which will continue until it is completely ended."
They also revealed that the SDF has "no popular support" in the area and that the locals "deal with them as a de facto force."

Health system can withstand four months of war: Lebanese Health Min.
Lebanese Health Minister Firass Abiad informed Sputnik on Friday that in the event of an Israeli aggression, Lebanon's health system would be able to withstand the impact of war for a maximum of four months, and preparations are currently underway.
"Preparations are in full swing in the ministry to confront any large-scale war with Israel. A medical emergency headquarters has been launched. The health sector is prepared to counter [the effects of] war for four months," the minister said.
The preparation and restocking of hospitals with medical equipment and medicines are directly tied to the potential threat of an Israeli military campaign, and these efforts also aim to ensure the provision of medical services to refugees, Abiad added.
"We have 20 ambulance crews, most of which are now in southern Lebanon. We are working to increase their number. We are also recruiting teams for the Chouf region and the western Beqaa [province]," the minister noted.
Hospitals in the south of the country continue to operate and provide care, with facilities categorized as red, yellow, or green based on their proximity to the frontline, Abiad further said.

Amid the looming threat of retaliation from Iran and Hezbollah, the Health Ministry has been working to secure stockpiles of aid and personnel in anticipation of a potential war.
Several attempts have been done to push for a ceasefire. However, due to "Israel's" obtinancy, none of these attempts came to fruition, with many observers blaming Netanyahu for these failures.
Earlier this week, the Lebanese Health Ministry received 32 tonnes of medical assistance from the World Health Organization (WHO). Lebanese authorities are expecting additional shipments from WHO and friendly states in the near future.

'Renowned University of Chicago Professor of Political Science John Mearsheimer has given a “gloomy” analysis about Israel’s standing, saying that the Middle Eastern nation’s problems are “deep, unfixable” and getting worse.
Mearsheimer made his comment during an interview with Judge Napolitano, saying that ten months into its ruthless war against the Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip, the Israeli army is worn out, yet it has not defeated Palestinian resistance fighters in Hamas. “Israel is stuck in Gaza,” said the professor. It’s a hornet’s nest from which it had to leave in 2005, he pointed out, adding that Israel simply cannot comprehend that the catastrophic destruction and unresolved problems it has caused in Gaza lie on its border, and also has no hope of defeating Hezbollah in Lebanon or Iran.'

Tensions are once again escalating between Israel and Iran, after the Israeli military committed back-to-back assassinations last week on a commander of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah group in Lebanon and a prominent Hamas leader who was visiting Tehran for the new Iranian president’s inauguration.
Israel is reportedly preparing for retaliatory strikes from both groups, and residents in southern Lebanon continue to flee as many fear that the ongoing crossfire between Hezbollah and Israel at the border could now turn into a full-blown war.

Press freedom groups are raising alarm after New York police arrested and charged videographer Samuel Seligson for allegedly filming pro-Palestinian activists hurling red paint at the homes of top officials of the Brooklyn Museum, part of a campaign by activists demanding the institution divest from Israel.
Seligson faces eight counts of criminal mischief with a hate crime enhancement, which is a felony. Police also raided his home twice. Seligson is a well-known local journalist whose work has appeared on major news outlets, and his attorney Leena Widdi says the charges are an attack on constitutionally protected press freedoms. “It is an extremely concerning assault on the First Amendment.
The reason why the freedom of press is so strongly protected is because there’s some underlying belief that in order for the public to meaningfully participate in a democracy, they must be actually informed,” Widdi tells Democracy Now!
