Our family had a pet rat once. It came from a university via a brother since the fellow would not kill the rat after the experiments.

He was intelligent, friendly, fun-loving, and all-round companionable. He lived in a large wooden box in the kitchen, with the wire lid permanently bent back open. He came and went. Fun Fact: Cats actually have instinct to not drink standing water. Running water has far less chance of nasty bugs in it, and cats instinctively know this. I had one that refused to drink out of a bowl, insisted on the tap, once he learned that it could be accessed that way.

I like how the cat wouldn't let the fox up on the porch, I guess he's just not allowed. ;) Foxes grow huge in Alaska, I don't think I 've ever seen one that big.
