The US has long been working in Ukraine to prepare operatives for subversive work against Russia, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday. His comments came after the New York Times claimed the CIA has been actively involved in Ukraine since the 2014 Maidan coup.
“The work of so-called American advisers, most of whom departmentally belonged to the CIA, is well known,” Peskov told TASS when asked to comment on the NYT article published on Sunday.
These people “occupied jobs in the building of the presidential administration of Ukraine… this is not a secret,” the Kremlin spokesman added.
According to Peskov, the CIA and other US agencies began operating in Ukraine long before 2014, actively recruiting people and preparing them for “subversive work against our country.”
In its report, the NYT claimed that the CIA has turned Ukraine into a major asset to spy on Russia since the Maidan coup. It further alleged that the US has funded and organized a network of secret bases throughout Ukraine, making Kiev part of a “secret coalition” against Moscow.
According to NYT journalists, Ukraine currently hosts at least 12 spy bases that actively gather information on Russia, eavesdrop on its military communications, coordinate drone strikes, hack into Russian, Belarusian and Chinese satellites, and manage a network of agents inside Russia itself.
Back in October, the Washington Post also reported that the CIA had invested “tens of millions” of dollars in Ukraine since 2014 to transform Kiev’s spy agencies into “potent allies against Moscow.” The outlet stated that US intelligence services maintain a “significant presence” in Kiev to this day, even as the Ukrainian Security Service has carried out “dozens of assassinations against Russian officials, alleged collaborators, military officers and prominent war supporters,” such as journalist Daria Dugina, who was killed in August 2022.
Moscow, meanwhile, has repeatedly described increased US activity on Ukrainian territory, as well as Kiev’s NATO aspirations, as threats to its national security and one of the key reasons for launching its military operation in February 2022.

Kiev’s forces reportedly withdrew from the village of Lastochkino to safeguard their supply lines and conserve manpower
Ukrainian troops have abandoned the settlement of Lastochkino, a few kilometers west of the strategic city of Avdeevka recently captured by Russian troops, the local outlet Strana reported on Saturday citing Ukraine’s military.
The website cited a Ukrainian volunteer fighting with the neo-Nazi Aidar battalion as saying that units had to withdraw from the area to “avoid the blocking of their logistical routes” and to “save personnel.” The Ukrainian Telegram channel DeepState confirmed the development, wondering where the Ukrainian high command would announce the preparation of a new defensive line.
Several Russian Telegram channels claimed that Moscow’s troops had already entered Lastochkino, posting unverified pictures and a video of soldiers waving a Russian flag in the middle of the devastated settlement.
Neither the Russian nor Ukrainian Defense Ministries have confirmed the reports. However, officials in Moscow said on Saturday that the Russian military “continued to occupy more advantageous… positions” in the Avdeevka sector while repulsing Ukrainian counterattacks.
Moscow announced the capture of Avdeevka last weekend, which has been a frontline city since 2014. It claimed that the Ukrainian retreat had turned into a disorganized rout with heavy losses. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky called the decision to withdraw “absolutely logical,” insisting that it was necessary to avoid heavier casualties.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that the capture of Avdeevka was “certainly a success,” adding that it needed to be expanded upon.
The Avdeevka area was previously used by Kiev as a launching ground for attacks on Donetsk, the capital of Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR). The Defense Ministry in Moscow previously said that the capture would help protect the latter city from “terrorist attacks by the criminal Kiev regime.”
The DPR, along with three other former Ukrainian regions, overwhelmingly voted to become part of Russia in the autumn of 2022 in public referendums.

Key Incidents Involving NATO Warships & Aircraft Near Russia's Borders Yesterday
After the Ukraine conflict intensified, warships from the United States and other NATO countries increased provocative forays into the Black Sea. There has also been a surge in incidents involving NATO aircraft flying near Russia's maritime borders over the past few years.
Russia has dismissed accusations recently levelled by Armed Forces Minister Sebastien Lecornu of having “threatened” French planes in the Black Sea.
Alexey Chepa, first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, underscored that Russia has never behaved “aggressively,” and invariably acts within international rules and flight assignments.
Sebastien Lecornu appeared on French radio RTL, claiming that, "A month ago, a Russian air traffic control system threatened to shoot down French aircraft in the Black Sea, even though we were in the internationally free zone in which we patrol."
In another incident dredged up by Lecornu, a Russian warship purportedly anchored in Baie de Seine, off northern France, at the edge of the country's territorial waters in a bid to "intimidate" France. He also accused Moscow of allegedly adopting an increasingly “aggressive stance" and "playing with the thresholds."
It should be noted that amid the escalation of the Ukraine conflict, there has been a surge in incidents when US and NATO warships have entered the waters of the Black Sea. In 2021, NATO sent over 30 warships to the area, breaking its own “record” that had held since 2014. There has also been an increase in incidents involving NATO aircraft flying near Russia's maritime borders, from the Barents and Baltic seas in the north and west, to the Bering Sea and Sea of Okhotsk in Russia's Far East. From the opening days of Moscow's special military operation in Ukraine, the Black Sea has been a focal point of the NATO-led proxy war against Russia.
The fresh allegations by the French minister prompted Sputnik to take a look at provocative incidents involving NATO warships and aircraft near Russia's borders over the past few years.

First M1 Abrams Tank Destroyed in Ukraine Shortly after Appearance on Battlefield
Russian forces claim they have successfully destroyed an American-supplied M1 Abrams main battle tank for the first time, coming two full years into the Ukraine war, outside the captured city of Avdiivka in the Donetsk region.
The US-made advanced tank was reportedly taken out by a kamikaze drone or loitering munition launched by Russia's 15th Motorized Rifle Brigade. Russian state media accounts made the announcement Monday and published video purporting to show the destruction of the M1 Abrams main battle tank.

The attack is said to have happened in or near the village of Berdychi, which lies northwest of Avdeevka. Ukraine forces are reportedly in retreat from the city after Russia's recent capture of it last week.
The introduction of Western main battle tanks into Ukraine appears to have made little or no actual difference in giving Ukraine a tactical advantage.
Instead, starting last spring Russian media widely circulated images showing German-made Leopard 2 tanks burning. And then in September the first UK-supplied Challenger 2 was destroyed.

🔹On the Donetsk Front, Russian forces were active on most of the frontline. After shelling the enemy with long range weapons, they attacked in #Novomikhaylovka, on the eastern outskirts of the town of #Krasnogorovka, in the area of #Nevelskoye and #Pervomayskoye. Here the frontline ⚠️did not change significantly. But similar actions of the RF Armed Forces west of #Avdeyevka led to a ⚠️breakthrough in #Tonenkoye (Thin). Here, as they say, it's "on the thin". Macron uses the leadership crises in NATO to strengthen his position among the (antirussian) western leaders. Even though his megalomanic and warmongering ideas have scant support among the western population.

Assuming, as always, that this is real; then it adds evidence to the general idea that - whatever its initial "rationale" - the primary aim of this war from those on the West who sustain it, has now become sheer destruction: destruction of economies, military materiel, and human life - especially Ukrainian and NATO lives.
Because surely it has long been the case, since at least WWII, that a lone tank deployed against a peer military, without any other support and lacking air superiority, is just a ten million dollar sitting-duck/ death trap?

Retreating Ukrainians try (and fail) to halt Russia's advance with bungled chemical weapons terror plot
Ukrainian saboteurs plotted a terrorist attack in Russia's Zaporozhye region using an analog of a US-made BZ (3-Quinuclidinyl benzilate) chemical warfare agent, the Russian Federal Security Service revealed. This would-be act of terrorism was foiled and three Ukrainian suspects behind the plot are now in custody.
"The chemical warfare agent has been used by the US since the late 1950s," Igor Nikulin, military expert, former member of the UN Commission on Chemical and Biological Weapons, told Sputnik.
"BZ is considered a non-lethal weapon, but it incapacitates a person for quite a long time. Even if one gets just one milligram of the substance, that person becomes incapacitated for 70-80 hours."
Despite being considered a non-lethal weapon, BZ can lead to paralysis of the heart muscle and death if used in large doses, Nikulin cautioned.
The expert noted that BZ was developed by the US military at the Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland. Though it was claimed the United States had destroyed its chemical weapon stockpiles, no one can be sure, the expert emphasized. Unlike Russia, the US did not allow OPCW inspectors into their facilities. To date there has been no independent confirmation that the United States has eliminated its chemical arms, Nikulin stressed.
The expert presumed that the US supplied the BZ-like substance directly to Ukraine in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention: "The Ukrainian military is losing on the battlefield and are trying to stop the Russian offensive with acts of [chemical] sabotage."

Macron’s ‘pseudo-martial’ remarks show his ‘megalomania got the better of reason’
Emmanuel Macron’s belligerent statement about the possible dispatch of NATO soldiers to Ukraine is mostly posturing – but it could easily take Europe down a slippery slope, becoming a “de facto declaration of war,” Mikael Valtersson, a former defense politician and chief of staff with the Sweden Democrats, told Sputnik.
He suggested that the French president was using “the paralysis within the US political system about support for Ukraine” to try to replace Washington as the leading pro-Kiev power.
“NATO is partially incapacitated, especially in regards to Ukraine… The second tier nations now try to fill the empty space created,” Valtersson said. “Even if this suggestion probably is posturing, it opens up a door to talk about direct Western military involvement in Ukraine.”
According to the ex-officer, “a full-scale military conflict between Russia and several European countries” could be the end result of the French president’s escapade.
Macron must be aware that it is “game over” for Ukraine, ex-Colonel of the French Special Forces Task Group under NATO command in Kosovo Jacques Hogard added.
Macron may be under the delusion that he is “showing off his muscles,” but “they are those of a paper puppet,” Hogard added, stressing that the French president’s “megalomania” seems to be getting the better of reason.
“We are convinced that the defeat of Russia is indispensable to security and stability in Europe,” Macron told reporters after Paris hosted a meeting of some 20 European leaders to discuss the situation in Ukraine on Tuesday.
However, France failed to get any viable support, turning the “demonstration of European unity” into proof of Europe’s deep disillusionment in Ukraine.

Putin's forces may soon invade New York! The Russians are already at the outskirts of New York, waiting to seize the town by force. New Yorkers beware!
But this isn't New York, New York, but New York, Donetsk, Ukraine (or by other standards Donetsk, Russia). The town has appeared on the map as "New York", "Niu York" or "Нью-Йорк" since 1846, but it isn't clear if is named after the big U.S. city or after the German town of Jork.
In any event, it should make some interesting headlines when they do.
