G7 states support IAEA’s efforts on Zaporozhye NPP protection zone — statement
The G7 leaders "strongly condemn" what they called Russia’s "continued seizure and militarization" of the Zaporozhye NPP and "willful destabilization" of the power plant
BERLIN, December 12. /TASS/. The G7 member states support the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) efforts to establish protection zone around the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, says the joint G7 statement, adopted after a video conference meeting Monday.
The G7 leaders "strongly condemn" what they called Russia’s "continued seizure and militarization" of the Zaporozhye NPP and "willful destabilization" of the power plant.
"We support the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) efforts to establish a Safety and Security Zone," the statement reads.
The Zaporozhye NPP is the largest operational nuclear power plant in Europe. Russia took control of it on February 28, during the first days of the special military operation in Ukraine. The power plant continued to operate as usual. In early September, it was visited by an IAEA mission led by Director General Rafael Grossi. After the delegation left the site, IAEA employees stayed at the power plant as observers. Later, the agency published a report, calling to establish a protection zone around the power plant in order to prevent emergencies that could be caused by hostilities.

Speaker calls escalation of Kosovo situation ‘dangerous’, says new provocations possible
Konstantin Kosachev also stressed that in this situation Brussels, even if it wanted to avoid an escalation of tensions, "in fact, even here has driven itself into a trap similar to the Ukrainian one"
MOSCOW, December 12. /TASS/. The escalation of the situation in Kosovo is extremely dangerous for Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and the Serbian population, as Western pressure will only increase, Federation Council deputy speaker Konstantin Kosachev said on Monday.
"A dangerous but by no means unexpected escalation in Kosovo happened on Sunday, and it was a difficult one for the Serbian leadership. President Aleksandar Vucic said: ‘We are nailed to the wall’. The situation is indeed extremely difficult for him personally and for the Serbian population of Kosovo," the senator wrote on his Telegram channel.
He noted that the West "in conditions of increased stakes in the conflict with Russia" has long wanted to force Serbia not only not to support Russia, but not even to take a neutral position. "And therefore the pressure will only increase, further provocations are possible as never before," Kosachev pointed out. According to him, Belgrade is trying to rely on the arrangements concluded under the EU auspices with the mediation efforts of the West, which, in the lawmaker’s opinion, is useless.
The official also stressed that in this situation Brussels, even if it wanted to avoid an escalation of tensions, "in fact, even here has driven itself into a trap similar to the Ukrainian one." "Unconditional support for one side of the conflict not only leaves no room for mediation and diplomacy, but also makes the EU itself a hostage of Pristina, just like Kiev in the Ukrainian conflict. Kosovo could easily escalate the conflict, provoking the use of force by Serbia. And the EU will have no choice but to continue supporting Pristina and condemning Belgrade, which, by the way, the EU is already doing," Kosachev said.
He drew attention to Vucic's remarks that the West should not be trusted after former German Chancellor Angela Merkel's statement that the Minsk agreements were signed in order to give Ukraine time to become stronger. "We realized that a little earlier, but better late than never," the senator concluded.
Escalation of tensions in Kosovo
A new escalation of tensions in northern Kosovo came after the December 10 detention of former Serbian policeman Dejan Pantic. He was detained by Kosovo police at the Jarinje administrative boundary line between Kosovo and Metohija and Central Serbia. In retaliation, the Serbian population blocked the highway in several locations near the checkpoint with barricades and protested. The Serbs wanted to prevent Pantic from being taken to Pristina. The EU’s EULEX (European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo) and the NATO Kosovo Force (KFOR) also took patrols to the barricades.
Later, the Prime Minister of the unrecognized Kosovo, Albin Kurti, demanded that the Serbs remove the barricades by the evening of December 11. Otherwise, he threatened to launch a Kosovo police operation to remove the barricades.
On December 11, Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic announced that international agreements and resolutions aimed at solving the Kosovo issue had no importance for Kurti. She pointed out that he regarded calls for peace and stability, for an open and honest dialogue, for respect for and the full implementation of all agreements reached in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue only as a threat.

Serbia urges EU nations that don’t recognize Kosovo to bar its entry to EU
Aleksandar Vucic said he would send personal letters to the leaders of Greece, Spain, Cyprus, Romania and Slovakia
BELGRADE, December 12./TASS/. Serbia urges the EU member countries that do not recognize the independence of Kosovo to prevent Pristina from submitting an application for European Union membership on December 15, Serbia’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic said on Monday.
"We are working on this, to urge all EU member nations that have not recognized Kosovo to contest this issue from the point of view of status, that is [from the point of view] that there are no necessary conditions to discuss this," Dacic told the Tanjug news agency.
Earlier, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that on December 15, Pristina will officially apply for EU membership, thus violating the Washington Agreement. Vucic said he would send personal letters to the leaders of Greece, Spain, Cyprus, Romania and Slovakia, the countries that have not recognized Kosovo’s independence.
Earlier, the president of unrecognized Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, said that Pristina would apply for EU membership by the end of this year. The president of the European Council, Charles Michel, stressed in this regard that the EU would assess the membership application from unrecognized Kosovo when the document was officially received from Pristina.
Under the Washington Agreement, Pristina agreed not to apply for membership in any international organizations, while Serbia agreed to suspend its efforts to encourage other states to revoke the recognition of Kosovo. In early August of 2021, the Kosovo parliament declined the resolution obliging it to comply with the Washington Agreement.
Kosovo and Metohija unilaterally proclaimed its independence in February 2008, and over recent years, it has been actively trying to join international organizations, including UNESCO and Interpol. Over 60 countries refuse to recognize Kosovo, including Russia, India and China, as well as five European Union countries.

Kosovo is ‘playing with fire’ – Moscow
Russia says international law supports Serbia’s position in breakaway province
Moscow is “alarmed” by the mounting tensions in Kosovo, which are the fault of “radical” ethnic Albanian authorities in the breakaway Serbian province and their Western sponsors, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Monday.
Authorities in Pristina have undertaken a “series of provocations” with the connivance of the US and the EU, using “ethnically motivated violence” to target the remaining Serbs in the province, Zakharova told reporters.
Prime minister Albin Kurti is seeking to distract from a failed domestic policy by “playing with fire, spinning up Serbophobic hysteria” and escalating tensions “closely approaching an armed conflict,” said Zakharova. Only the forbearance of local Serbs and the government in Belgrade is preventing things from sliding into open violence, she added.
“We stand in solidarity with the leadership of Serbia,” Zakharova said, endorsing Belgrade’s position that the Kosovo Albanians and the West “cynically ignore the fundamental UN Security Council Resolution 1244, the Brussels and Washington agreements.”
The UN resolution provided for a NATO presence in the province after the bombing of Serbia in 1999, while the 2013 Brussels agreement envisioned autonomy for the remaining ethnic Serbs.

Russia has no right to security guarantees – Poland
Moscow needs to ensure the safety of the EU, not the other way around, Deputy FM Jablonski claims
Russia cannot expect security guarantees from other nations, a senior Polish diplomat has said. Calls to address Moscow’s concerns about NATO expansion in Europe have come from former and serving leaders of EU nations, including ex-German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron.
People should not “let themselves be persuaded … that Russia has the right to expect security guarantees from anyone,” Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Pawel Jablonski told journalists ahead of a meeting of top diplomats of EU member states, which kicked off in Brussels on Monday.
“It’s just a strategic mistake – that kind of consideration. It is not Russia that needs security guarantees today, but Europe needs security guarantees from Russia,” he said, adding that the Polish delegation will call for the harshest sanctions possible on Russia during the ministerial meeting.
Moscow has for years told the US and its allies that the expansion of NATO poses a threat to Russian national security, and warned that by ignoring its objections on issues such as Ukraine’s potential membership in the US-led bloc, Western nations were crossing a red line.
A last-ditch attempt to defuse tensions came last year, when Moscow offered an agreement which it said would address this concern. The proposal was rejected, with Western leaders doubling down on NATO’s open-door policy. Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine in February, citing, among other reasons, the bloc’s creeping expansion to the east.

Putin shrugs-off Washington's provocations and 'sticks to business'
Last week's drone attacks on Russian military bases represent a serious escalation in Washington's proxy war on Russia. One of the attacks involved an airfield that is located less than 200 miles from Moscow. Naturally, the incident rankled Russian President Vladimir Putin who convened an emergency meeting of his Security Council to explore the options for retaliatory strikes. We have no doubt that Russia's Top Brass recommended tit-for-tat missile strikes beyond Ukraine's borders as a form of equal payback. Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed and the military stuck with its current strategy of obliterating critical infrastructure in cities across the country. The attacks on Ukraine's fragile electrical grid are the essential preparation for the launching of a widely-anticipated winter offensive. Here's more from an article at the World Socialist Web Site:
So, what does this new incitement mean and how will it affect the conduct of the war?
We think Washington has adopted a new tactical approach that could be called "calculated recklessness", that is, the US is launching meticulously planned attacks that are made to look like impulsive acts of aggression by their proxy, Ukraine. The objective of these attacks is to provoke Moscow into an overreaction, that is, retaliatory strikes on targets outside of Ukraine. That, in turn, could be used as a justification for NATO's entrance into the conflict which, ostensibly, is Washington's goal.
It appears, however, that Putin and his advisors have resisted the temptation to expand the war beyond the current battlespace.
In other words, Putin has not been baited into the escalation that Washington seeks, but that doesn't mean he won't call up additional reservists to form territorial defense units in multiple areas along Russia's western flank. We think he will. Moscow can no longer ignore the threat of future attacks or incursions on its own soil. It must bulk up its manpower and prepare for the worst. Gradually, Russia is moving towards a full wartime mobilization

Bridge in Russian border region hit in ‘sabotage attack’ – authorities
A highway bridge located near the city of Melitopol in Russia’s Zaporozhye Region was damaged in an explosion late on Monday, the local authorities have reported. The officials called the incident a “sabotage attack.”
The blast in the region bordering Ukraine took place around 22:00 local time, a statement by Zaporozhye’s administration said, adding that “several pillars of the bridge were damaged.” Traffic across the bridge was halted following the incident, the authorities stated.
Several videos published on social media by Vladimir Rogov, a senior regional official, showed the roadway on the bridge sagging down in at least one place. A loud bang can also be heard on another of Rogov’s videos purporting to show the moment of the blast.
Ukrainian terror plot in Zaporozhye foiled – Moscow
Ukrainian terror plot in Zaporozhye foiled – Moscow
On his Telegram channel, Rogov blamed the attack on Ukrainian “terrorists.”
The bridge is part of a road linking Melitopol to the port city of Berdyansk located on the Azov Sea.
Zaporozhye Region, together with three other former Ukrainian territories, joined Russia after holding referendums this fall.
In late November, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) claimed to have foiled a terror plot in Zaporozhye. The suspects planned to detonate a bomb at a market in Melitopol, according to the FSB. At least three Ukrainian nationals were arrested in connection with the plot.
