The Saudi–Israeli normalization 'delusion'
While Saudi–Israeli rapprochement may be Trump's diplomatic fantasy, deep-rooted regional realities, shifting West Asian interests, and Palestinian national aspirations make it an elusive mirage rather than an imminent deliverable.
On 4 February, when asked if the Saudis demand the establishment of a Palestinian state as a condition for recognizing Israel, US President Donald Trump, sitting alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Oval Office, swiftly replied: “No, they’re not.”
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs was also quick to respond, stating that its stance on the establishment of a Palestinian state remains “firm and unwavering,” insisting that Riyadh would make no deal with Tel Aviv otherwise:
“His Royal Highness (Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman - or MbS) emphasized that Saudi Arabia will continue its relentless efforts to establish an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, and will not establish diplomatic relations with Israel without that.”
The statement further stressed that the Saudi position on this is “non-negotiable and not subject to compromises.”
Despite the fervent optimism of Trump’s newly appointed foreign policy team, the much-touted Saudi–Israeli normalization agreement remains an elusive goal, just as it was for his predecessor, Joe Biden. While Washington insists that such a deal is potentially around the corner, a more sober analysis suggests the pathway to a deal remains rife with obstacles.
Spanner in the works
The Abraham Accords, brokered under Trump’s first term, were hailed in Washington as a historic breakthrough in West Asian diplomacy, bringing the occupation state into official relations with the UAE, Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan. Yet, the glaring absence of Saudi Arabia – the most influential Arab state – was the missing piece that the US and Israel craved most.
Biden’s tenure, rather than advancing Trump’s initiative, has arguably undermined it. His administration’s unyielding support for Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza and its brutal military campaign in Lebanon has alienated many Arab and Muslim states, further diminishing the likelihood of new normalization deals.
Meanwhile, China has capitalized on Washington’s waning credibility, scoring a major diplomatic coup in 2023 by brokering a historic rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Iran – a relationship that, against the odds, remains intact.
Despite the changed reality on the ground, this US administration still believes that the deal between the world's largest oil exporter and Israel is still attainable on its terms. Mike Waltz, the Trump administration's new national security advisor, has stated that reaching a peace agreement between Riyadh and Tel Aviv is a “huge priority” for the new administration.
Saudis caution: A deal on whose terms?
While the Saudis drew a clear line and maintained it for a very long time by linking normalization with Israel to the establishment of a Palestinian state, neither Israel nor the new Trump administration have shown any willingness to accommodate Saudi intentions.
Many of Trump’s supporters and major donors, such as Miriam Adelson, as well as the Israeli government, not only oppose any form of a Palestinian state, but are openly talking about annexing the entire occupied West Bank. Therefore, it is still unclear how Trump intends to reconcile two vastly opposing views and expectations and expand the Abraham Accords.
According to Giuseppe Dentice, an analyst at the Mediterranean Observatory (OSMED) of the Italian Institute for Political Studies “San Pio V,” Trump will likely fall back on his tried-and-tested approach – leaning on the Abraham Accords as a framework while resurrecting elements of his so-called “deal of the century.”
Dentice explains to The Cradle that the ultimate goal of such efforts is to sideline the Palestinian cause entirely, pushing it to the periphery of both regional and global agendas.
Moreover, many believe that the Trump administration will launch a crusade against the “global intifada” and those who dare to criticize Israel or insist on prosecuting Israeli war crimes.
This approach, Dentice contends, essentially forces a single option in the negotiations: Take it or leave it.
“Trump’s aggressive approach to Riyadh could backfire for the US and its interests in the Middle East (West Asia), especially if the Al-Saud kingdom continues to reject these terms, risking closer alignment with the agendas of other international actors (such as China or Russia, if only in strategic or instrumental terms).”
Saudi investments in the US: Buying leverage or time?
Some observers speculate that Saudi Arabia's recent announcement that Riyadh plans to invest $600 billion in the US over the next four years could be understood as a certain early bribe to Trump in return for easing his zealous pressure regarding the Saudi–Israeli normalization agreement and other geopolitical issues as well.
While it is true that convincing the Saudis will be a tough nut to crack, Dentice, for one, does not believe that even such a significant economic commitment could distract or dissuade the new government from its goals.
He believes that beyond the issue of normalization agreements with Israel, Riyadh wants to strengthen its understanding and cooperation with Washington, especially with this government. Nonetheless, it remains true that key figures associated with this administration, such as Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, could undermine Saudi processes and intentions through their own business relationships.
For Dr Paul Rogers, Emeritus Professor of Peace Studies in the Department of Peace Studies and International Relations at the College of Bradford, President Trump is far too unpredictable for anyone to conclude on the chances of a deal with Saudi Arabia, but his recent comments on the option of expelling the Palestinians from Gaza indicate a very close relationship with far-right Israeli political factions.
Dr Rogers tells The Cradle that he suspects “that the Saudis will stay away from any kind of agreement, no matter what offer they make.”
Arab public opinion: A hard sell
Beyond geopolitical calculations, public sentiment in the Arab world remains a major obstacle to normalization. The rejection of a Palestinian state, coupled with an aggressive push for Saudi–Israeli ties, is widely viewed as an attempt to erase the Palestinian cause altogether – an agenda that lacks legitimacy among Arab and Muslim populations.
Furthermore, many observers believe that Israel’s war crimes and the genocide in Gaza have made it very difficult and uncomfortable for Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS) to continue peace talks.
But West Asian views against normalization precede even the brutal 15-month war. According to the Arab Opinion Index from 2022, for example, an average of 84 percent of citizens in 14 countries rejected diplomatic relations with Israel. These figures show that the Arab enforcers of the Abraham Accords ultimately failed to reach or sway wider Arab public opinion.
The war in Gaza has only cemented anti-Israeli views in Saudi Arabia, and an unconditional normalization agreement with Israel would only increase the risk of destabilizing the crown prince’s image in the kingdom and abroad. It would also humiliate MbS, who has publicly condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, recognizing them as a “genocide.”
A mirage in the desert
Palestinian statehood is by no means a simple issue, even if an Israeli government supported the initiative, which the current one resolutely rejects.
Palestinian national aspirations can lose momentum due to internal divisions, the lack of an organized leadership capable of addressing current and future challenges, and the faltering support of traditional Arab sponsors – notably the loss of Syria following the ousting of former president Bashar al-Assad by Al-Qaeda-linked extremists – Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) – who now form the new government.
For all the speculation surrounding a Saudi–Israeli deal, the reality is that no proposal for Palestinian statehood has made meaningful progress in the past three decades. As a result, ad hoc unilateral initiatives have increasingly taken center stage, often yielding disastrous consequences.
In this context, the push for a Saudi–Israeli accord seems less like a diplomatic breakthrough and more like a mirage conjured by Washington and Tel Aviv.
Dentice believes that in such a context, and with the prospect of a possible Saudi–Israeli agreement, the Palestinians will have even less political relevance in the future. This will give space for radical and armed groups to gain ground and further exacerbate tensions on the Palestinian and Arab streets.
Trump’s aggressive tactics may succeed in strong-arming some leaders, but they are unlikely to change deep-seated regional attitudes. If anything, the pursuit of an agreement without major concessions for Palestinians could inflame tensions further, pushing the region into even greater instability.
For now, the notion of a Saudi–Israeli deal may be more fantasy than fact – an illusion sustained by wishful thinking rather than political reality.

Governmental Media Office in Gaza stated that only 4% of tents needed for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip entered since the start of the ceasefire agreement.
Previously this week, the office confirmed that the Israeli occupation has been delaying the entry of shelter materials and fuel into Gaza despite the humanitarian protocol under the ceasefire agreement.
The Israeli occupation was supposed to allow the entry of 60,000 caravans and 200,000 tents into Gaza to accommodate displaced Palestinians whose homes and residential areas were destroyed during the Israeli genocide.

Texas representative filing impeachment articles against Trump over Gaza plan

A Democratic representative told the US House on Wednesday he was bringing articles of impeachment against Donald Trump for his proposal to “take over Gaza”.
Trump’s plan, the Texas representative Al Green said, was a “desperate deed” that amounted to ethnic cleansing.
The aggressive move came as Democrats stepped up their resistance to the fledgling Trump administration and its barrage of chaotic, power-grabbing new policies that many see as a coup.
Trump says US will ‘take over’ Gaza Strip in shock announcement during Netanyahu visit
Green, a firebrand politician who launched a number of unsuccessful attempts to impeach Trump during his first term in office, is unlikely to find much traction on his latest effort. Pete Aguilar, the No 3 House Democrat, told Politico on Wednesday that impeachment was not an immediate focus of his caucus.
But it is evidence that more elected Democrats are finding their voice amid what critics say has been a muted response so far to the extremes of Trump’s 16-day-old second presidency. The liberal advocacy group Call to Activism posted on X on Tuesday a clip of the Maryland representative Jamie Raskin suggesting he was also open to a new impeachment effort.
“If you can find me two Republicans, I’ll go to work tomorrow,” Raskin said, referring to the governing party’s wafer-thin House majority.
Green invoked the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr in lambasting Trump’s proposal to remove Palestinians from Gaza and rebuild the war-torn territory as a US-owned “Riviera of the Middle East”. The plan has been globally condemned as “outrageous”, “shameful” and “illegal”.
“Ethnic cleansing in Gaza is not a joke, especially when it emanates from the president of the United States, the most powerful person in the world,” he said. “And the prime minister of Israel should be ashamed, knowing the history of his people, to stand there and allow such things to be said.
“Dr King was right. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, and injustice in Gaza is a threat to justice in the United States of America. I rise to announce that the movement to impeach the president has begun. I rise to announce that I will bring articles of impeachment against the president for desperate deeds proposed, and desperate deeds done.”
Green said the “impeachment movement is going to be a grass-up movement, not a top-down”, and that “when the people demand it, it will be done”.

Jordan King rejects plans to displace Palestinians, annex West Bank
Jordan’s King Abdullah II reaffirmed his firm opposition to Israeli settlement expansion and any attempts to annex land or displace Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank during a phone call with Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, on Wednesday.
The two leaders discussed the latest developments in Gaza, the West Bank, and Syria, with King Abdullah emphasizing the need for Palestinian unity and intensified Arab and international efforts to sustain the ceasefire in Gaza and bolster humanitarian relief efforts in the besieged enclave.
They also stressed the importance of supporting Syria while preserving its unity, sovereignty, and stability amid ongoing regional challenges.
Meanwhile, Axios reported on Tuesday that the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Egypt, and Jordan, along with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s advisor, Hussein Al-Sheikh, sent a joint letter to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The letter expressed strong opposition to any plans for the forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza and called for Palestinian participation in the reconstruction process of the territory.
After US President Donald Trump introduced his "takeover" scheme for the Gaza Strip, which entails the forced displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians recovering from the 15-month-long Israeli genocide, a wave of backlash swept the political scene as world leaders condemned and rejected the plot.
Trump predicted the war-ravaged Gaza Strip, home to more than two million Palestinians, could become "the Riviera of the Middle East" as he announced his plan to seize the territory, even if it entails the ethnic cleansing of around 2.4 million people.
"The Riviera of the Middle East. This could be something that could be so magnificent," Trump said at a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at which he again voiced hopes that Palestinians could be forced out of their homeland and said the United States would redevelop the territory.
Widespread criticism
Palestinian officials and factions have rejected and denounced Trump’s recent remarks, calling them a reflection of "ignorance" and an "unwavering alignment" with Israeli interests.
This comes shortly after Trump pushed for Washignton's "takeover" of the Gaza Strip, during a joint news conference held with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"The US will take over the Gaza Strip and we will do a job with it, too. We'll own it. And be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on this site," Trump said.
The statement emphasized that Hamas and the Palestinian people would never allow any entity to occupy their land or impose external governance.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to establishing a Palestinian state with al-Quds as its capital, calling for international bodies like the United Nations, the Arab League, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to urgently address the situation.
Scheme to eliminate the Palestinian cause
Hamas spokesperson Abdel Latif al-Qanou also condemned Trump’s proposal, warning that it was part of a broader scheme to "eliminate the Palestinian cause."
"This is a desperate attempt to wipe out our just cause," he said, calling Trump’s rhetoric "dangerous" and aligned with the agenda of "Israel’s" far-right government.
Al-Qanou insisted that Palestinians would never accept forced removal from their homeland. "The people who have withstood the most brutal military assaults for 15 months, facing the world’s most lethal army, will not surrender," he said. "No matter the cost, they will remain steadfast on their land."

@AutumW - "Think if a city the size of Montreal was forced to move to, say, Greenland? What a damn mess."
The thing is; this kind of thing is normal procedure for the global totalitarian elites.
According to the UK government's own official numbers (underestimated) the population of the UK had net growth of about 1.7 million people in just the past two years - a mass of people equivalent to the size of the cities of both Birmingham (second largest city in England) plus Bristol.
There have been colossal population movements over the past 20 years, all over the world; planned, facilitated and coercively imposed by the Western leadership class (paid for by resources extracted from the populations of the host countries) - so that forcibly relocating or dispersing the population of Gaza would be "business as usual" for them.
Just to add to this previous post something that seems obvious to me, but which I haven't seen explicitly stated -
Which is that what is really intended to happen with DT's proposal, is that the US will supervise (and take the flak for) the forcible relocation of Gaza's remaining population, will rebuild the place at US expense - and will then hand it all over to Israel.
That is what Trump's proposal amounts to - behind the deceptive rhetoric.
And this makes perfect sense because DT was allowed to win the US election, and is being allowed to govern (unlike in 2016) exactly and only because he is the favoured candidate of Israel, and has been propagandized by that very powerful group of US political figures that some call the Neo-Cons, and their financial backers.
What we are seeing here, is a big part of the reason how Trump got elected - the avalanche of other stuff is really just a distraction (a mixture of crowd pleasing or mischief).
But I predict there will be more of this yet to come.

Trump Wants To Take Over Gaza, Announces 500,000 Dead
February 05, 2025
The king of Israel (with a red alpha tie) visited his vassal state in America where real-estate developer Donald Trump (blue beta tie) pushed the chair for his leader and offered him to cleanse the Palestinian population from all land the Zionists desire to take.
Via AP:
President Donald Trump on Tuesday suggested that displaced Palestinians in Gaza be permanently resettled outside the war-torn territory and proposed the U.S. take “ownership” in redeveloping the area into “the Riviera of the Middle East.”
...
The provocative comments came as talks are ramping up this week with the promise of surging humanitarian aid and reconstruction supplies to help the people of Gaza recover after more than 15 months of devastating conflict. Now Trump wants to push roughly 1.8 million people to leave the land they have called home and claim it for the U.S., perhaps with American troops.
“The U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it too,” Trump said at an evening news conference with Netanyahu by his side.
The internationally acknowledged Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics' count of the population of Gaza in 2023 was 2,226,544. Trump wants to remove all Palestinians from Gaza and gives their number as 1.7 or 1.8 million:
Reporter: How many people are you thinking need to leave Gaza?
Trump: “All of them. Probably a million seven, maybe a million eight. They’ll be settled in areas where they can live a beautiful life.” (video)
This is an acknowledgement, by the president of the United States, that the genocidal Zionists have murdered up to 500,000 people in Gaza.
Despite that toll few in Gaza would move voluntarily:
Gazan residents generally want to stay on their land.
Trump did not specify where the new land for Gazans might be found, although he made his comments after repeating his desire for Egypt and Jordan to take in Gaza’s residents. Nor did he appear to grapple with the many Gazan residents who would not want to depart their home territory, nor with the practicalities of potentially forcing them to leave it.
“I do see a long-term ownership position, and I see it bringing great stability to that part of the Middle East, and maybe the entire Middle East,” Trump said.
Asked if U.S. troops would be deployed to take over Gaza, Trump said that “we’ll do what’s necessary. … We’ll take it over and develop it.”
Netanyahu said that he was open to the idea.
The plan for the ethnic cleansing of Gaza is not new at all:
Afshin Rattansi @afshinrattansi - 23:37 UTC · Feb 4, 2025
This has been Israel’s dream for decades
Israel’s NSC Director Eiland in a cable from 2004 leaked by Wikileaks said Gaza ‘is a huge concentration camp’ and that Israel’s solution would be to expel the Palestinians of Gaza to Egypt’s Sinai Desert
The plan has bi-partisan U.S. support:
Harry Sisson @harryjsisson - 1:44 UTC · Oct 11, 2023
Amazing: President Biden is working on a plan with other countries that would allow civilians to safely leave Gaza and cross the border into Egypt. This is great news. President Biden is making sure that innocent people don’t die due to the actions of Hamas. That’s leadership.
It is a real estate developer's dream:
Robin Monotti @robinmonotti - 23:47 UTC · May 8, 2024
GAZA 2035: A NEW SMART 15 MINUTE CITY BUILT ON THE MASS GRAVES OF PALESTINIAN CHILDREN: New plans in Israeli media reveal what Israel want to do with Gaza post genocide and land theft. The dystopian vision for the Gaza Strip is being currently approved by the Netanyahu government. Link below.
The long planned for and now announced final ethnic cleansing of Gaza would be in breach of a long list of international laws and conventions.
There is no agreement on where the Palestinian people would move to. Egypt, Jordan, Turkey and other countries in the region have rejected the resettlement of any Palestinians to their land. The Foreign Ministry of Saudi Arabia issued a length statement against it at 4:00 am local time(!):
The Foreign Ministry affirms that Saudi Arabia’s position on the establishment of a Palestinian state is firm and unwavering. HRH Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister clearly and unequivocally reaffirmed this stance.
The leaders of those countries know that this would not be the end of the story:
These displacement plans do not end with Gaza. The West Bank, where Israel is escalating military operations, is considered by many right-wing extremists in Israel to be the real prize, and Jordan the preferred destination for Palestinians living there.
Still Trump may think he can win from this. As M.K. Bhadrakumar analyses:
Trump used the expression “take over” of Gaza Strip. He didn’t elaborate. Trump and Witkoff are two master-builders and they visualise the seamless potential of killing many birds with a single shot —
first and foremost, strengthening Israel’s security through the ethnic cleansing and resettlement in Gaza;
two, restoration of Israel’s regional dominance in the region in a medium and long term perspective;
three, a solution to the intractable Palestinian problem;
four, rendering obsolete the various outlandish ideas like “two-state solution”;
five, burial of the very notion of a Palestinian state;
six, Israel’s regional integration through Abraham Accords;
and, above all, massive business spin-off for American companies for decades to come out of the development of the “Riviera of the Middle East”.
...
Prima facie, Netanyahu lured Trump into a trap by enticing him with a seductive scenario of massive lucrative business in Gaza’s reconstruction. Trump’s imagination is running riot, completely disconnected from ground realities. Such naïveté is fraught with real danger of blowing up on his face sooner rather than later and turn into an albatross for his presidency. This has all the making of a quagmire for the Trump administration.
Should Trump pursue this policy it will come to define his presidency. It may well become his Vietnam.
