Almost 1,500 school book bans were put into place around the U.S. in the first half of the current academic year, according to PEN America.
An analysis from the group released Thursday found 1,477 book bans were implemented in the first half of the 2022-2023 school year, affecting 874 unique books. In the six months prior, from January to June 2022, there were 1,149 instances of book bans found by the free speech organization.
While PEN America put together a comprehensive report, it says the number of book bans is “unquestionably much higher” than what it was able to gather from public information.
It distinguished among four types of book bans: banned in libraries and classrooms, banned in libraries, banned in classrooms and banned pending investigation.
Banned pending investigation was the most popular category for the first half of the current school year, making up 52 percent of the book bans, the organization found.
“Though timelines vary across districts, investigations can be time-consuming, resulting in bans on particular titles that last months at a time. These restrictions are recorded as bans because they 1) remove access to books, even if temporary, and 2) are counter to procedural best practices for book challenges from the American Library Association (ALA) and the National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC),” PEN America said in a statement.
Among the almost 900 unique books taken off the shelves, 44 percent have themes of violence, 38 percent involve health and well-being, 30 percent have themes of death and grief, 30 percent discuss racism and have characters of color, 26 percent include LGBTQ themes and characters, 24 percent had to do with sexual experiences between characters and 17 percent dealt with teen pregnancy and abortion.
Much of the discussion around banning books in the U.S. has to do with the perceived appropriateness of books for certain age groups. Some Republicans have asserted there are books with pornographic material on the shelves in schools.
“Over the last year, however, terminology such as ‘obscene,’ ‘pornographic,’ ‘harmful to minors,’ and ‘sexually explicit’ is being utilized to restrict a range of content, including books on LGBTQ+ experiences, stories that include any sexual references, sex education materials, books that include portrayals of death or abuse, and art books,” PEN America said.
The report found the states with the most book bans include Texas, Florida, Missouri, Utah and South Carolina, which have all implemented laws that put some restrictions on the type of material allowed in the classroom.
Much of the legislation around what books can be on the shelves in schools is vaguely worded, causing librarians and teachers to preemptively take books off the shelves for fear of political backlash.
“The heavy-handed tactics of state legislators are mandating book bans, plain and simple,” said Suzanne Nossel, CEO of PEN America. “Some politicians, like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, have tried to dismiss the rise in book bans as a ‘hoax.’ But their constituents and supporters are not fooled. The numbers don’t lie, and [they] reveal a relentless crusade to constrict children’s freedom to read.”
The top five books that have been banned in the first half of the school year are “Gender Queer: A Memoir,” “Flamer,” “Tricks,” “The Handmaid’s Tale: The Graphic Novel” and “Crank.”
Just a question for all "woke" people pushing sexual indoctrination on children (among others at schools) ... Why is it that NOBODY called it "censorship" a decade (or more) ago, when pornography & explicit sexual pictures were (still are) forbidden for little children & the underaged below 18.
By framing it a "censorship" you are planting seeds of "resistance" to so-called: "injustice" <<< this of course total lunacy and in favor of the pedo-networks!
This is 17 minutes. Mike Adams spells out the exact implications of the RESTRICT Act in the US. He is right, if the Bill gets passed into law, its over.
Quote:
Mini-documentary from Mike Adams explains the horrifying dangers of the RESTRICT Act now being pushed to criminalize free speech in America. The government could use this act to seize websites of alt media, imprison anyone who disagrees with the regime and even burn down Christian churches, Waco-style, if they refuse to bow down to the LGBT agenda. The RESTRICT Act is pure tyranny and pure evil. Make sure your representatives know to OPPOSE it at every level.

'Wow!!' Tucker Carlson is going ALL OUT on the media here!
The American channel Fox News has severed ties with ratings gun Tucker Carlson. He was last seen on TV last Friday. Why Carlson is leaving has not been disclosed.
He recently went wild on the media in the Full Send Podcast . Carlson, who has worked in the media world all his life, said the media is part of the recording equipment.
Contempt
“That is their only function. They are not there to inform you. Not even when it comes to the important topics, such as the economy, war, corona, things that really matter," he stressed. It's not their job to inform you. They work for the small group of people who run the world.” He referred to the media as the "servants" and "Praetorian Guard" of the elite. “We must treat them with contempt because they deserve it.”
“Wow! Tucker Carlson goes wild with the media. Can't he say about the AIVD because that is 'undermining'. To look!" responds Member of Parliament Pepijn van Houwelingen (FVD).
Biolabs
A Sky News Australia presenter suspects Carlson was fired for his coverage of US biolabs in Ukraine. On his last broadcast, he asked, “Why does the US government have secret biolabs in a primitive country like Ukraine.” He added that the Biden administration not only has labs in Ukraine, but also "sensitive nuclear technology."
Sky News contributor Megyn Kelly thinks Tucker Carlson could exceed his Fox News viewership numbers as he will have a more “direct relationship” with his audience. “It’s a much more authentic, real business model – I think Tucker will thrive,” she told Sky News host Paul Murray.

Antiwar activist Jose Vega is well on his way to becoming a legendary disruptor of the war machine. His latest target: an event at Columbia Journalism School featuring some of the news media’s top editors talking about anything BUT the Nord Stream pipeline bombing and the ongoing perilous dance with World War III.
Guest host Aaron Maté and Americans’ Comedian Kurt Metzger talk to special guest Jimmy Dore about the sad state of journalism in America and why disruptors like Vega are so important to holding the powerful accountable.

“Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear."

A small unelected cabal with undue political clout has the ability to censor media and punish politicians who try to speak out against big pharma malfeasance.
Even the affable Dr. Campbell has been censored.
