An elderly Ukrainian told how he ended up at the front
According to him, he received a summons four times. Three times he was sent home because he was too old.
The fourth time, however, he miraculously looked younger, turned out to be quite healthy and full of energy.

The Russian flag is now flying over Kurakhovo
Great news this morning! Reports from the field confirm that the "Yuzhny" neighborhood, along with all residential areas in Kurakhovo, has been completely cleared of Kiev Forces.

Suggestions are that the Russians may have now entered Pokrovsk although it's difficult to verify from this footage, filmed from a vehicle moving through a part of the city which, on initial viewing, appears largely deserted save for a handful of civilians seen walking along.
Edit to add: ah, okay, the above video may best be considered a kind of calm-before-the-storm footage. A helpful update from Dec 28th, below:
Text:
🇷🇺 The storm has a name: The Russian Army prepares for an offensive on Pokrovsk.
Ukrainian forces anticipate the imminent start of a Russian offensive on Pokrovsk, Forbes reports. Fresh reinforcements are being deployed to the city, including a Ukrainian Armed Forces brigade equipped with Western machinery. However, the Russian Army's superiority in this sector of the front — as elsewhere — is overwhelming.
"There is an unsettling silence in the city… the calm before the storm," commented volunteer Denis Khristov.
The article specifies that this storm has a name: the 90th Guards Tank Division, forming the core of a powerful ground force grouping made up of dozens of brigades and regiments organized into two combined-arms armies.

How the Attempted Maidan 2.0 in Georgia Fell Flat 1 hour ago
https://cdn1.img.sputnikglobe.com/im...062802e21c.jpg
Month-long protests in Georgia and Western pressure on the ruling Georgian Dream party have come to nothing, with the new president being inaugurated on December 29 and protesters peacefully dispersing in Tbilisi.
How Did It Unfold?
-Former-President Salome Zurabishvili demanded new parliamentary elections, accusing the Georgian Dream party of rigging the October vote. The Georgian Central Election Commission (CEC) dismissed her claims as "baseless" and "politically motivated" on December 24.
-Zurabishvili is a pro-EU French-born politician aligned with the European Parliament (EP), which in late November called for the Georgian elections to be re-run under international supervision despite the fact that the elections had been held in the presence of international observers.
-The EP's stance led Georgian Dream to suspend EU accession talks until 2028, which the Western-backed opposition used to fuel protests.
-Four pro-Western opposition parties that have boycotted parliament since October organized a month-long protest in Tbilisi.
-Six MEPs from Poland, Lithuania, and France joined pro-EU protesters and met Zurabishvili on the eve of the Georgian presidential election, sparking accusations of external interference.
-On December 27, the US imposed sanctions on Georgian Dream's founder Bidzina Ivanishvili, accusing him of steering Georgia toward Russia and away from the West.
Did It Affect the Presidential Vote?
No. Georgian Dream candidate Mikheil Kavelashvili was elected by a 300-member College of Electors on December 14.
The outgoing president refused to concede, sparking fears of nationwide protests and split power.
Did It Help the Opposition?
Kavelashvili's inauguration went ahead on December 29 as Zurabishvili left the palace despite earlier pledges to stay, declaring she was taking "legitimacy" with her.
After the inauguration, Kavelashvili reaffirmed Georgia’s commitment to EU membership and stronger US ties.
Tbilisi expressed readiness to reset relations with President-elect Donald Trump.

US must make first step to restore ties with Russia — Lavrov 29 Dec,
"So we’ll see. If the Americans begin to take our interests into account, dialogue will gradually recover. If not - then everything will remain the way it is," the top Russian diplomat said
MOSCOW, December 29. /TASS/. Russia is open to restoring political dialogue with the US but Washington must make the first move, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with TASS.
"As for the prospects of Russia-US relations, then in the event of the US’ readiness, we are open to restoring political dialogue, interrupted by Washington after the onset of the special military operation," Lavrov said. "Since it was interrupted by the Americans, not us, they should be the ones to make the first step," he added.
"So we’ll see. If the Americans begin to take our interests into account, dialogue will gradually recover. If not - then everything will remain the way it is," the top Russian diplomat said.

S-500 regiment was created: the ultimate weapon takes shape Dec 28, 2024
Russia has taken a monumental step in redefining air and space defense by deploying its first full regiment of the S-500 long-range air defense system. This advanced weapon marks a seismic shift in Russia’s military strategy, setting the stage for an era where hypersonic missiles, satellites, and even spaceplanes are no longer untouchable.
https://bulgarianmilitary.com/wp-con...ussia-says.jpg
In a high-profile briefing for foreign military attachés, General Valery Gerasimov, Russia’s Chief of the General Staff, confirmed that the country’s first regiment armed with the cutting-edge S-500 air defense system is nearing full operational readiness.
“This system is unlike anything we’ve deployed before,” Gerasimov stated, highlighting the S-500’s ability to counter the most advanced missile threats, including hypersonic weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles. “The formation of this regiment is a game-changer in our strategic defense capabilities,” he added.
What’s clear from this announcement is that Russia isn’t just keeping pace with global developments in missile defense—it’s setting the bar. The S-500’s integration into the military represents a bold statement of intent, signaling that the era of contested airspace is giving way to contested space itself.
As Gerasimov hinted, this first regiment is only the beginning. The rollout of the S-500 will likely reshape the balance of power, challenging NATO’s ability to project force and complicating the strategic calculus for any adversary considering action in regions under its protective umbrella.
With this move, Russia has drawn a new line in the sand, one that extends not only across the ground and skies but into space itself.
The S-500, officially named “Prometey,” is no ordinary air defense platform. Its missiles can intercept targets at a mind-bending 600 kilometers—outclassing anything the U.S. or NATO currently fields. For comparison, the American THAAD system maxes out at roughly 200 kilometers, while the Patriot system doesn’t even come close.
This unprecedented range allows the S-500 to strike far beyond Russia’s borders, targeting high-value assets critical to NATO’s air power, such as refueling tankers and AWACS aircraft, long before they can even approach contested airspace.
Unlike its predecessor, the S-400, which deploys four missiles per launcher, the S-500 uses a leaner two-missile configuration. But don’t let that fool you. These missiles pack an enormous punch, designed specifically for ultra-high-altitude, ultra-high-speed engagements.
