Trump: No More U.S. Money for Ukraine, Sanctions on Russia Could Be Lifted
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has declared that he no longer wants to spend American money on Ukraine and signaled a possible end to sanctions against Russia—but only after a settlement is reached in Ukraine.
🔹 The United States aims to build “excellent relations” with both China and Russia.
🔹 Ukraine’s NATO ambitions are off the table. Trump emphasized that the conflict began because of this very issue.
🔹 Washington will push for Ukraine to regain some lost territories, but Trump admitted this would be difficult to achieve.
🔹 Trump praised Putin as a “very smart” political leader and expressed confidence that a deal on Ukraine could be reached. However, he also insisted that Russia would have to make concessions to resolve the conflict.
🔹 Trump claimed that the European Union was created to cheat the United States, saying: “They did a good job of it, but now I’m president.”
🔹 The U.S. has already spent $350 billion on Ukraine, and Trump hinted that Zelensky will sign a deal on rare earth metals when he visits the U.S.
🔹 The United States will impose a 25% tariff on EU imports, not just on cars, but on “everything else.”

On February 25, Trump said that Zelensky could come to Washington on February 28 to sign the minerals deal
WASHINGTON, February 26. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump has confirmed that Vladimir Zelensky will come to Washington this Friday and a deal on Ukrainian natural resources will be signed during the visit.
"President Zelensky is going to be coming on Friday. That's now confirmed, and we're going to be signing an agreement, which will be a very big agreement," Trump said during the first meeting of his cabinet.
On February 25, Trump said that Zelensky could come to Washington on February 28 to sign the minerals deal. The US leader indicated in early February that the United States sought access to Ukraine’s rare-earth minerals. On February 12, US Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent delivered the agreement on natural resources to Zelensky. Despite Zelensky expressing willingness to sign the deal, he failed to do so during his meeting with Bessent, nor later when he met with US Vice President JD Vance in Munich.
Zelensky claimed that the draft presented to him lacked security guarantees. However, US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz declared on February 21 that Zelensky would sign the agreement with the US soon. Subsequently, sources within Zelensky’s office informed Ukrainian media that the document still required finalization, and Zelensky himself announced at a press conference on February 23 that he "does not want" to sign the agreement with the US because, in his view, future generations of Ukrainians would bear the financial burden.

Personal note: Trump has made too many inconsistent comments on the issue of UK, France or US troops in Ukraine. It should be evident to all by now that Trump is using the minerals deal with Zelensky as a potential trip wire to derail Russia's ownership of the 4 new provinces. Please wake up everybody, Trump is in this just to be able to brag he's the top wheeler-dealer, and has no real concern about the lives of ordinary people that he's playing with.
As the Durans expressed in the interview below, even Russia's foreign minister Lavrov has shown signs of annoyance about Trump's contradictory statements.

I wondered how receptive Putin would be to the peace negotiations that Trump is proposing, and I think we are starting to see some strong indications that he is very receptive.
Russia says it proposed resuming direct flights with U.S.
At the U.S.-Russia talks in Istanbul on February 27, Russian representatives proposed restoring direct flights between the two countries, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday.
“The American side was invited to consider the possibility of restoring direct air service,” the ministry said.
According to the statement, the meeting involved a “substantive” discussion of “ways to overcome numerous ‘irritants’ inherited from the previous U.S. administrations.” The two sides reportedly agreed on “joint steps to ensure the unhindered financing of the activities of the diplomatic missions of Russia and the U.S. on a reciprocal basis and to create proper conditions for diplomats to fulfill their official duties.”
“Issues related to Russia’s diplomatic property in the U.S. were also raised in the context of returning six real estate properties that were unlawfully seized between 2016 and 2018. The importance of achieving practical results aimed at creating conditions for improving bilateral relations in the interests of the peoples of our countries was particularly emphasized,” the ministry added.

MOSCOW, February 28. /TASS/. The US greenlighted the appointment of Alexander Darchiev as Russia’s new ambassador, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
"During the consultations that the delegations of Russia and the US held on February 27 in Istanbul to discuss a normalization of the operation of the two countries’ diplomatic missions, the American side handed over an official note with an agrement for the appointment of the director of the North Atlantic Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry, Alexander Nikitich Darchiev, as the new ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the United States of America," the statement said.
He is expected to depart for Washington shortly.
Darchiev was born in 1960. He graduated from Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1983 with a degree in history. Darchiev enrolled in the diplomatic service in 1992, taking the job of first secretary at the Foreign Ministry’s North America Department. He then served as head of division at the department until 1997. From 1997 to 2002, he was counselor of the Russian Embassy in the US. From 2003 to 2005, Darchiev had the job of deputy director of the North America Department at the Foreign Ministry. From 2005 to 2010, he served as minister counselor at the Russian Embassy in the US. From 2010 to 2014, he was director of the North America Department at the Foreign Ministry. In October 2014, Darchiev was appointed Russia's ambassador to Canada, a post he held until January 2021. From 2021 to 2025, he served as director of the North America Department at the Foreign Ministry, a unit responsible for ties with the US and Canada. In 2025, he was named director of the Foreign Ministry’s North Atlantic Department, which oversees relations with the UK, Ireland, Canada and the US.
Darchiev is proficient in English and French.
