Sir Paul McCartney revealed Tuesday that he plans to use AI technology to “extricate” John Lennon’s voice from a previously unheard track to create “the final Beatles record,” reports the BBC.

“We just finished it up and it’ll be released this year,” McCartney, 80, told the outlet.

The musician said that in order to use Lennon’s voice, he turned to “Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson for help.

“He [Jackson] was able to extricate John’s voice from a ropey little bit of cassette that had John’s voice and a piano,” explained McCartney. “He could separate them with AI — he could tell the machine, ‘That’s the voice, that’s the guitar, lose the guitar.’ And he did that, so it has great uses.”

MoD to use Google’s AI despite warnings technology could threaten human race:

The Ministry of Defence has signed a deal with Google to use artificial intelligence (AI) despite recent warnings that the technology could threaten the human race.

The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), the ministry’s research arm, will use Google’s Cloud platform to learn about AI’s potential uses, which include cybersecurity work, disaster response and speeding up research.

Just last week, Rishi Sunak’s adviser on the technology warned that the world has two years to stop AI from becoming a threat to the human race.

Matt Clifford, the Prime Minister’s AI task force adviser, said there are “all sorts of risks now and in the future” from the “pretty scary” technology which should be “very high on the policy makers’ agendas”.

But the tech giant and the MoD have promised to use the technology responsibly. Google has also pledged not to allow its AI software to be used for weaponry.

Dstl’s chief executive Paul Hollinshead said: “As one of the most transformative and ubiquitous new technologies, AI has enormous potential to transform societies.

“Dstl’s collaboration with Google Cloud is one of the significant steps Dstl is taking to prioritise research, development, and experimentation of technologies in line with our commitment to safe and responsible AI.”

It comes after thousands of Google staff in 2018 signed a letter protesting their employer’s role in a US programme that used its AI technology to interpret video and refine the accuracy of drone strikes.

It led to the tech company laying down rules for how it deployed AI, including a list of “applications we will not pursue”, which included weapons development.

By adding ChatGPT, voice control via the "Hey Mercedes" MBUX Voice Assistant will become even more intuitive. An optional beta program for U.S. customers will begin on June 16, 2023 for over 900,000 vehicles equipped with the MBUX infotainment system1.

Customers can participate via the Mercedes me app or directly from the vehicle using the voice command, "Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta program."2 The rollout of the beta program will happen over-the-air. Mercedes-Benz is integrating ChatGPT through Azure OpenAI Service, leveraging the enterprise-grade capabilities of Microsoft's cloud and AI platform.

More than 300 people showed up for the experimental Friday morning service almost entirely generated by the chatbot, as reported by the Associated Press (AP).

‘Dear friends, it is an honour for me to stand here and preach to you as the first artificial intelligence at this year’s convention of Protestants in Germany,’ the avatar said with an expressionless face and monotonous voice.

The 40-minute service – including the sermon, prayers and music – was created by ChatGPT and Jonas Simmerlein, a theologian and philosopher from the University of Vienna.

ChatGPT maker OpenAI has been lobbying European Union officials to get the bloc to weaken its strict and detailed regulations for artificial intelligence – all while championing its willingness to cooperate with world powers to keep the fast-evolving tech in check, a new report revealed.

The AI leader proposed amendments to the bloc's AI Act and some were later applied to the said regulation's final text, according to documents obtained by Time from the European Commission. The outlet noted that it obtained the files through freedom of information requests.

The documents revealed how OpenAI repeatedly argued with European officials regarding the designation of general-purpose AI systems such as GPT-3 and image generator Dall-E 2 as "high risk" technology.

Chander went on to say that OpenAI's document only shows how many big tech companies "used the argument of utility and public benefit of AI to mask their financial interest in watering down the regulation."

OpenAI is now looking to open an appstore for AI Apps.
