Covering twice the area of the Parthenon in Athens and being half as high, Kailasa is an engineering marvel that was executed straight from the head with zero margin for error. Modern draughtsmen might have a lesson or two to learn here.

The Sudama and Lomas Rishi Caves at Barabar in Gya are amazing and represent the earliest example of rock-cut architecture in India.
The Sudama Cave consists of a circular vaulted chamber with a rectangular mandapa.
The Lomas Rishi Cave was carved out of a huge rounded granite rock and has an arch-like shape façade. The internal surface is highly polished.

The vid in Deux Corbeaux’s quoted post (post #11 of this thread), of duration L = 3:27, is a fleeting intro to these amazing rooms.

Cut into exposed weathered ridges of granite, in the region of Barabar (somewhere in India), they have recently been surveyed to a high degree of accuracy. The precision found there is astonishing, including to the various craftsmen and technicians who contributed to the following vid, which was presented today on the YT chan UnchartedX.

Lots of aspects are covered, from histories interpreted from a number of chiselled written statements, to what-the-heck and how-the-heck about the precision.

There is at least one PA member, sorry I forget his name, who may get something out of images/vid of the writing.

My main interest is in the large scale precision, the symmetry of the rooms. This was measured by a laser survey instrument, “LIDAR”. Timestamp for this, is about 40 - 52 minutes, of a total vid length of 2:02:04. (I am currently at 1:18:++).

Somewhere before the lidar bit, they examine the smoothness of the polished surfaces with an instrument that uses direct contact. They found that the smoothness there approaches that of modern glass, like windows. Smoother surfaces than are obtained using machine polishing tools on commercial polished stone items like countertops. This in itself is super cool, but not as cool IMO as doing it at the large scales of the symmetry measurements

Edit: as I watch it further, am at 1:32:56, they are abt 3 mins into talking geometry, relative alignments and volumes. Now I’m thinking maybe those chambers were shaped to be a sound instrument of some kind, an exact resonating chamber for a purpose not about art. Anybody wants to pass this idea up to researchers, you have my blessing. … I forget the name of the mysterious fashioned-out-of-brittle-black-rock spinner thing, but that might be an acoustic tool too.


Edit 2: just finishing (other iPad), last bit from ~01:47:— to ~01:59:—, is about sound experiments that they did, through the years of the various other experiments that they presented earlier. Arti$tic licen$e lol, which I will grant them, but I think that that angle should be stepped up. Some interesting threads here on PA that deal with alledged weird-ass effects from acoustics. "The remote and rugged region in the North Caucasus, in the Kabardino-Balkaria Republic of the Russian Federation, is a place of towering mountains and untamed wilderness. Yet, in 2011, Arthur Zhemukhov, who is a Russian speleologist, which is the scientific study and exploration of caves, made an astonishing discovery at the Khara-Hora mountain peak. There, he found a deep, narrow, vertical shaft, seemingly swallowed by the Earth itself. It was made of parallel stone slabs that seemed perfectly geometrical as if they were artificially made. The walls were straight and polished, extending 40 meters or 130 feet deep into the mountain, before opening into a wide underground hall. The straight walls of this shaft were constructed from large megalithic blocks that fitted together at right angles with minimal gaps. There were even large stones that looked like columns.

Shocking Study Shows that the Stonehenge Altar Stone came from the Northern Tip of Scotland



A new study has revealed that Stonehenge’s six-tonne altar stone came from even further afield than archaeologists thought. Neolithic people somehow moved the enormous stone roughly 750km from northeastern Scotland to southwestern England.

A new mystery

The altar stone lies at the heart of Stonehenge, buried in the center of the circle. Much like the Neolithic site it belongs to, its purpose remains a mystery.

The majority of the Stonehenge Circle is made of either sarsen (silicified sandstone blocks) or bluestone (a type of fine-grained sandstone). The sarsen stones are from the nearby West Woods. But the bluestones come from the Preseli Hills in southwest Wales, already a monumental distance to transport heavy loads with primitive technology.

The sandstone altar stone is the biggest bluestone, and researchers had assumed it came from the same corner of Wales. Fresh geological fingerprinting shows that this is not the case.

The layout of Stonehenge

The altar stone was added to the site during the second construction phase between 2620 and 2480 BC. Last year, Nick Pearce, a professor of geography and earth sciences at Aberystwyth University, declared that the stone was not from Wales.

Now, an international team from Wales, Australia, and England has pinpointed its original location in northern Scotland.

“I don’t think I’ll be forgiven by people back home,” lead author Anthony Clarke, who is from Wales, told the BBC.



A shocking result

Stonehenge is a World Heritage Site, and researchers cannot chip away at the stones. Instead, they have to use historical samples. One of the study’s samples was taken in the 1840s, the other in the 1920s. The team studied the mineral grains in the stone fragments to analyze their age. The chemical fingerprint showed that some minerals are two billion years old, while others are around 450 million years old.

The team compared this chemical fingerprint with rock and sediment from across Europe. The results match the Old Red Sandstone from the Orcadian Basin, a depression of sedimentary rock in northern Scotland. The basin stretches from Inverness to the Orkney Islands.

“This is a genuinely shocking result,” co-author Robert Ixer said.

The findings provide fresh insight into the Neolithic period.

“Our discovery of the Altar Stone’s origins highlights a significant level of societal coordination during the Neolithic period and helps paint a fascinating picture of prehistoric Britain,” co-author Chris Kirkland commented.

How, and why?

How and why Neolithic people transported the rock remains a fascinating mystery. Speaking to The Washington Post, the authors said that this is a puzzle for future generations of archaeologists to solve, if it can be solved at all.

Drawing on his in-depth knowledge of the connections between the cosmology and linguistics of Egyptian, Dogon, Chinese, and Vedic traditions, Laird Scranton reveals the striking similarities between Skara Brae and the Dogon of Mali, who still practice the same cosmology and traditions they once shared with pre-dynastic Egypt. He shows how the earliest Skara Brae houses match the typical Dogon stone house as well as Schwaller de Lubicz’s intrepretation of the Egyptian Temple of Man at Luxor. He explains how megalithic stone sites near Skara Brae conform to Dogon cosmology, each representing sequential stages of creation as described by Dogon priests, and he details how the houses at Skara Brae also represent a concept of creation. Scranton shows how the cultivated field alongside the village of Skara Brae corresponds to the “heavenly field” symbolism pervasive throughout many ancient cultures, such as the Field of Reeds of the ancient Egyptians and the Elysian Fields of ancient Greece. He demonstrates how Greek and Egyptian geographic descriptions of these fields are a consistent match with Orkney Island. Examining the similarities between Skara Brae and Gobekli Tepe, Scranton reveals that Skara Brae may have been a secondary center of initiation and civilizing knowledge, a long-lost Egyptian mystery school set up millennia after Gobekli Tepe was ritually buried, and given the timing of the site, is possibly the source of the first pharaohs and priests of ancient Egypt.

Copying this new post from Vicus here. These underwater stones were discovered in 2007, but I'd never heard about it. Stonehenge is generally agreed to be dated to c.5,000 years old, so this implies that this underwater structure was built in about 8,000 BC.

Stonehenge remains one of these great mysteries, with experts around the world divided over why exactly the prehistoric monument was built.

Now, to add to this age-old confusion, it has emerged that a similarly enigmatic stone structure has been found beneath the waters of Lake Michigan in the US.

Not only that, but this underwater creation is around 5,000 years older than its British counterpart.

The site was discovered in 2007 by a team of archaeologists led by Mark Holley, a professor of underwater archaeology at Northwestern Michigan College.

Holley and his colleagues were conducting a survey of the lake bed when they chanced upon a series of large stones, arranged in a circular pattern, just off the coast of Traverse City, Michigan.
