Default No healthy level of alcohol consumption, says major study

Even the occasional drink is harmful to health, according to the largest and most detailed research carried out on the effects of alcohol, which suggests governments should think of advising people to abstain completely.

The uncompromising message comes from the authors of the Global Burden of Diseases study, a rolling project based at the University of Washington, in Seattle, which produces the most comprehensive data on the causes of illness and death in the world.

Alcohol, says their report published in the Lancet medical journal, led to 2.8 million deaths in 2016. It was the leading risk factor for premature mortality and disability in the 15 to 49 age group, accounting for 20% of deaths.

Current alcohol drinking habits pose “dire ramifications for future population health in the absence of policy action today”, says the paper. “Alcohol use contributes to health loss from many causes and exacts its toll across the lifespan, particularly among men.”

Most national guidelines suggest there are health benefits to one or two glasses of wine or beer a day, they say. “Our results show that the safest level of drinking is none.”

Quote Drinking alcohol was a big cause of cancer in the over-50s, particularly in women. Previous research has shown that one in 13 breast cancers in the UK were alcohol-related. The study found that globally, 27.1% of cancer deaths in women and 18.9% in men over 50 were linked to their drinking habits.
I found this in the article and was a bit shocked.

Let's also not forget that the politicians who may be telling us all to abstain will not be heeding their own advice. I reckon 99% of politicians are heavy drinkers, smokers/vapers and probably drug users too!

This study is typically flawed in the same way as studies showing drinking moderate amounts of red wine prolongs life.

Why? Because they don't take into account the reasons why people behave in such a way. Moderate wine drinkers are usually comfortably off and have a good social life - both of which prolong age regardless of any drinking habits.

Similarly, people who die from alcohol are highly likely to have serious emotional problems in the first place and to a degree suicidal on at least a subconscious level.

The statement that it's dangerous 'even in moderation' is meaningless because we can conclude that everyone who ends up in hospital drinks water but the two are not connected.

You can't take statistics in isolation and draw conclusions unless you also consider WHY this behaviour exists to begin with.

Found out that Absinthe is legal (and distilled) in my province.
I bought a small bottle and tried it; seemed to clean out some intestinal bugs.
Maybe buy a larger bottle tonight -- just for medicinal purposes.

Quote “Worldwide we need to revisit alcohol control policies and health programmes, and to consider recommendations for abstaining from alcohol. These include excise taxes on alcohol, controlling the physical availability of alcohol and the hours of sale, and controlling alcohol advertising. Any of these policy actions would contribute to reductions in population-level consumption, a vital step toward decreasing the health loss associated with alcohol use.”
After the war on cigarettes, we now have the war on alcohol ? What´s next ? Sugar would be at least sensible. We´ll see.

My advice: Eat, drink and do everything that makes you feel healthy and happy, ..... but in moderation, like my parents. They died at the age of 96 and 94 after a happy and healthy life, without illnesses.

My Dad lived to be 100 and loved having a drink of scotch or vodka or two before dinner. Guess he should have read this study before he died last year. Moderation ... eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we shall die.

Great post Deux. Moderation and balance in all things are the key if you can pull it off. It's funny over the years I have watched the "studies" say the coffee is good/bad/good/bad..... the same with alcohol. I think the best thing to do is listen to your body. If you can handle a glass or 2 of wine and it is relaxing great, if you can't (like myself) stay away from it. Listening to the so called experts can be crazy making.

I am in lucky in having never been overly fond of alcohol, though my main reason for my own dislike of it is that when people consume it they often become someone I don't like to be around.

I cannot vouch for the veracity of the following anecdote, but I enjoy reading it all the same.

An actor used to like to see his spiritual Guru. Everytime he saw him the Guru would ask him to meditate. The man said he could not.

Finally the actor asked Guru: Why is it that I have to give up everything fun to be spiritual? The Guru, knowing his disciple inside-out responded:

You like to smoke those cigars? Yes the actor responded. Then the Guru responded: Well keep on doing it.

You like to drink your alcohol? The Actor surprised replied: Yes

The Guru replied: You like to go out with women?

The actor (now getting red with embarrassment) replied: Yes.

You can keep doing all these things, the Guru replied. I just ask you to include one thing to all of them. Try to do a little meditation. Years later the man was found happy healthy and talking about his meditating. The point of the whole story is that the more we meditate the more we lose interest in everything that is bad for us and the more we enjoy that which is good for us.

I think we would all agree humans have been consuming alcohol for a very long time, hundreds and perhaps thousands of years. I bet we’d also agree that cancer was an extremely rare phenomenon until the past 100 years or so. So how can alcohol be a high cause of cancer? Seems to be more to the story.

I dont know where the quote comes from, however there is some truth in it.

True if alcohol was invented today it would probably be banned as a dangerous drug,
That which brings you pleasure, brings you pain.
That sure holds true to my experience with alcohol.

However many get pleasure from "social" drinking.

When reading the study this article was based on you'll find this:

    Quote Methods
Using 694 data sources of individual and population-level alcohol consumption, along with 592 prospective and retrospective studies on the risk of alcohol use, we produced estimates of the prevalence of current drinking, abstention, the distribution of alcohol consumption among current drinkers in standard drinks daily (defined as 10 g of pure ethyl alcohol), and alcohol-attributable deaths and DALYs. We made several methodological improvements compared with previous estimates: first, we adjusted alcohol sales estimates to take into account tourist and unrecorded consumption; second, we did a new meta-analysis of relative risks for 23 health outcomes associated with alcohol use; and third, we developed a new method to quantify the level of alcohol consumption that minimises the overall risk to individual health.
This study method is useless, you can correlate INSANE things with this type of study method.

There are well worked out and time proven ways to do studies scientifically; most notably the randomized double blind, and EVEN THEN we can get things wrong.

These new "meta-analysis" studies are not worth the pixels they take up on your screen... ALWAYS check the source and if it's a "study" ALWAYS check the methodology.

in my mind this study method is worse than useless, and almost certainly incorrect in it's findings.

Sigh....what doesn't 'cause' cancer these days?! You know what? - I really don't give a monkeys (as they say here in the UK) Even if (perish the thought!) I became a 'health bore', something's going to kill me sooner or later.
The world is for living & experiencing, & if that means imbibing 'naughty' stuff, then so be it. I would rather have an 'interesting' life than trundle on in misery to my 80's or 90's - a humourless (I would be without wine & my favourite foods!) old fossil......& minus friends.

My take on, "No healthy level of alcohol consumption, says major study".

    Four words...

    I'll drink to that!

Alcoholism is hereditary. I have it on both sides of my extended family from both sets of grandparents down to both my parents down to my sister and myself. My father quit drinking in 1987 in his mid 40's. I had my last drink in August 1989 when I was about to turn 21 (I could not have done it without my father....it was a life decision and the best decision I ever made, bar none). Alcoholism destroys families, careers, lives....it is a detriment to the human condition.

Alcoholics don't take mates...they take hostages.
