Such is the eccentricity of the oddball punctuation that both Eben Yblod and ripple use (the only two members of the forum who do this), I checked IP addresses to see if they might be the same person — one being a sockpuppet of the other.

It appears not. But the linguistic fingerprints are eerily similar. It's very weird seeing them both post on the same thread, side by side.

(PS: I don't understand this thread, either)

But my curiosity is piqued . Is this OP long lost Uncle Cuthbert ? Not seen since picking up his creative writing degree .

Made me laugh. I wonder what she wrote, 9 minutes after ripple's post, that she decided on second thoughts might not be quite so appropriate?

I've always had a fun, crackpot theory that the super weird punctuation you see sometimes is some sort of secret calling card. Maybe they're aliens, posting on this forum to observe and learn our ways, and they haven't quite nabbed punctuation yet? Or maybe they fully understand how punctuation works, but prefer to use it in odd ways, going back to the calling card thing.

    Who knows...

Back in the 80s and 90s there was a quirky, eccentric spiritual teacher who called himself Da Free John. (His real name was Franklin Jones. He changed his name, and the name of his organization, many times.)

Here's an exactly copied extract from one of his essays. They were very hard to read. The variable capitalization [he explained once] was deliberate, to kind of jolt the readers out of their trance.

Later editors disagreed, and most of his available books now read more normally. Many readers, even his loyal followers, were thankful.

(Personally, viewing the emperor who seemed to have no clothes, I always felt it was egotistical and pretentious.)

"The Way That I Teach is a Great Process. An Ordeal Of Self-Sacrifice to The Spiritual Form Of God. Many may Respond to My Offering, but some may need time to ponder and to prepare themselves. . . Those who find themselves in such a stage of Response to Me should not feel that they must remain apart from Me and the Fellowship. They should honor their Response to Me by becoming friends, patrons, and regular students of The Laughing Man Institute. . . Such individuals "ponder" by engaging the sadhana of Listening to Me. . . by pondering My Arguments and Responding to My Person. Therefore, active patronage, friendship, student participation, and beginner's discipline are in fact forms of real practice. . . honored by The Fellowship."

    (whatever it is!)

Once I was contacted by an elderly member here who hoped he was not a Grammar Nazi ( his term) , but could not understand why I allowed a space after each comma and period , as he quaintly called what we term a Full Stop .

In case this type of concern is getting in the way of some of the more important things in life , I give him , you , and others as appropriate , an explanation .

First , it looks nicer . A visual improvement in presentation . My view , my style , my signature . End of .

Second , the implicit instruction behind a comma is , slight break and , if reading , pause fractionally . And for a Full Stop , it is , make a clear break . And the best way to promote those instructions is to mirror them on the page .

Why jam a Full Stop as hard as possible onto the preceding and last letter of a sentence ? Almost a contradiction of target and intent .

Most people here double space lines in order to improve ease of reading . Essentially the same underlying thinking . It improves presentation and should help comprehension . My very points .

The other thing I do , of my own deliberate preference , is to ascribe Capital Letters to more than Proper Nouns , and as I have done in this sentence . This fixes attention to both the Proper Nouns plus any words which effectively behave as

such and which as Author I want highlighting /emphasising , even though that is outside text book protocols, which are even older than the very oldest here . Time for change ?! ( Hello . Another deliberate type of change --- question and /or emphasis ----which is now often liked and used ) .

Hopefully this will be helpful and particularly for those with tendencies toward OCD or who are just unhappy with Change ( ! ) . Perhaps Bill's earlier comment re. his preference for Shakespeare actually tells you more than he had in mind when

making his uncharitable and frankly irrelevant comparison .

To those it may apply to :- Project Avalon , not Project Fuddy Duddy .

That was me, in my genuinely friendly initial personal welcome PM to ripple a couple days after he'd arrived.

So now, at this point, I think we bid you farewell.

It's been quite a long time since we've received so many reports from folks here who simply don't like one single member. (This is yourself.) No-one knows you personally, of course, so our only clues are what you seem to reveal about yourself from your posts. And you have full responsibility for how and what you write, as you plainly take a great deal of care with all the fine details.

For whatever reasons, you seem to delight in (a) being contrarian, and (b) provoking others to dislike you while actually quietly relishing it. That's quite an interesting pathology.

After all but one of the team of on-duty moderators called for you to be unsubscribed (while I was offline the last week), having returned yesterday I'm making the decision now to support their strong recommendations. One moderator (Tintin), volunteering to be a good cop, as it were, had volunteered to PM you — and maybe he has (if so, we'll e-mail you his message) — but I'm afraid that's too late now.

We do sincerely wish you well. Never do we wish anyone ill! But it's become very plain now that you don't belong well here. You're free to take your rather snide attitudes (which you believe are humor!) elsewhere. And of course, you will.

I don't think it's a common thing in any generation to insert a space before commas , and periods .

I must admit, this is kinda funny....

    Quirky sense of humor here.

Since when is a person unsubscribed because people don't like them?

While I imagine ripple and I have differences of opinions, especially regarding Q.
I appreciate intelligence when I see it.

The whole scenario in this thread reminds me of the crab story in the book, "Don't Sweat The Small Stuff".
The one where the other crabs in the crab cage attack to the point of killing, the one that has figured out how to escape the cage to freedom.

Another lost opportunity for huge soul growth. (sigh)

Exactly what are the protocols for the moderation staff in making decision on how they take their actions?

    I'm curious.
Especially after what happened to me in September.

Oh, and to stand up for my reputation, I am quite well known for my kindness and the fact that I care deeply about people. (re Bills comments here)
Didn't appreciate that my character was disparaged without a single mod staff contacting me in person, while they evidently deliberated on what to do with me for 72 hours.

    Not.One.Single.ModStaff.

    Just saying....

In the professional world that is unheard of, and shoutout to Oddball.
Thank you for your comments here.
Thank you for the courage to stand up.

Truth be told, I was thanked by so many people for standing up for the issue I raised that evidently was the cause of my suspension in Sept, that I was shocked.

Perhaps the better relationship of admin to forum members ought to be professional instead of parental (aka authoritarian.)

And I feel I want to correct another misrepresentation of me in Bill's comments here...

I am an extra-ordinarily happy person, to the point that many people want to know how I do it. How am I always so happy. (ergo, why I LOL so much, I'm actually a very joyful person)
And I very much enjoy and appreciate many people in this forum.

But, the double standards and hypocrisy does cause some issue for me.
It would be wonderful if that issue could be honestly dealt with, Avalon has lost way too many good, and great members over the years, primarily due to that one issue that I raised in Sept,
.... that led to my suspension then, ... double standards and inconsistent ways matters are enforced on this forum.

This is the real reason why the numbers have been decreasing here, sensible people see this and get frustrated and leave.

Oh well, no sense in sweating the small stuff.

For those who may be interested, I've continued training for the hike-thru of the Appalachian Trail. Very excited. I leave this spring.... wooo hooo!!!!

We bought a book for our daughters, who had expressed interest in physics and the quantum world. A very interesting book, but with very odd punctuation. Sample below. The whole book is like this. He offers an explanation for the style, but it just seems unnecessary.

"It means = That transition - from unconscious - to conscious - to move out of sleep - where we are limited - inactive - and vulnerable = To awareness - where we are involved - responsible - and = Powerful ~ No matter how...."
The quantum field responds not to what we want; but to who we are being. Dr. Joe Dispenza

Besides being not at all interested in the de-education system from a young age, my grades began to drop when the multiple choice exam was introduced. No longer a need to understand the material just pick the right answer. Add to that the loose use of language and ambiguous terms and that was the last straw for me. But I was never fooled - I always knew it was the system and not me...
