(It's positively offensive to hear these ridiculous "scientific" opinions about what we are supposedly just learning about how smart and empathic animals are.
Animal lovers have always known far more about animals than modern "science".
In any case, I find it to be much more revealing when cats and dogs who have learned to communicate by pressing buttons which represent certain objects or actions, requests, etc. are allowed to communicate with their owners at will during the regular course of a day.
That's an entirely different situation than a forced "test". )

But then there's this (thanks to RunningDeer in a recent post) :



(Coincidentally, I just finished reading a funny novel (very light fiction) which features an exceptionally smart dog whose owner had been teaching him words and concepts for years, called "Lessons in Chemistry".
