This is a most astonishing story, absolutely out of the ordinary by any standards. And very, very moving.

There's a marvelous thread about Anna Breytenbach's work here. Highly recommended.

Owner reunited with cat found 1,200 miles from Portland home

Sasha had been missing for five years

A man in the US state of Oregon has been reunited with his missing cat after it was discovered on the streets some 1,200 miles (1,900km) away.

The black cat, named Sasha, was recently found in the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, five years after disappearing from its Portland home.

The Santa Fe Animal Shelter said it was able to locate the owner by scanning Sasha's microchip.

The cat was flown back to Portland this week and returned to his owner.

Viktor Usov said he originally reported his pet as missing five years ago and had lost hope of seeing him again.

"I couldn't believe it," he told the animal shelter. "We thought the worst, but when we received the call, we were so thankful Sasha was alive and well."

Details of how the cat made it to Santa Fe are unknown, but Mr Usov believes that his friendly pet "hitched a ride" with someone.

"I guess I want to think he was on a great American adventure," he said.

Murad Kirdar (right) reunites Sasha and Viktor Usov

Murad Kirdar, a public relations officer at the Santa Fe shelter, said the story highlighted the importance of microchipping pets.

"A simple microchip, which is the size of a grain of rice and is implanted under the pet's skin, helped us find the guardian of this missing cat," he said in a statement.

A microchip is the only form of pet identification that is "permanent, with a unique number that cannot fall off, be altered, or be removed", he added.

American Airlines flew Sasha and Mr Kirdar back to Portland on Tuesday so the owner and cat could be reunited. Spokesman Curtis Blessing told the BBC the airline was "honoured" to be part of the reunion.

"We're glad to have provided a happy ending to Sasha's long journey," he said.

Photographer captures incredible encounter with a herd of elephants
    12/5/19
(Imagine a huge wild male elephant coming this close! )

    Newsflare

"This was the moment wildlife enthusiast Ewan Wilson got up close and personal with a herd of giant elephants while retrieving a camera trap in the bush.

This once in a lifetime opportunity happened on November 24, while Wilson was getting footage of the elephants happily grazing when they decided it was the perfect time to investigate the truck.

Ewan told Newsflare “These incredible mammals decided to spare our lives that day. They had every right to crush me and flip the vehicle but they didn't.

"Despite having such a young calf in the herd the alphas kept us alive.

"Please do not replicate or recreate this event in the wild. I never go out looking for these interactions as the risks involved are not worth the outcome." "

When I have the highest allowance in compassion, and mercy and care tear me apart.

I am writing this post for a puppy for which I set out to heal it after an abuse by a stranger, that happened yesterday in the street in front of me at a distance too long to get in time to save her.
The most important thing now is the healing of the puppy, for which I put my every breath in my intention to recover as soon as possible, and I think the Universe has heard me!
    It'll be fine!

(Imagine this! I'm not certain if the humans who keep these bears aren't even more magical than the bears, but it's certainly a magical combination.)

    "Beastly
MANY parents struggle to maintain discipline in their home. But spare a thought for Jim and Susan Kowalczik whose main charge is a huge 1400lb Kodiak brown bear. The couple look after the 9ft giant at their orphanage where they have dedicated their lives to rescuing and releasing injured animals. They now care for 11 bears, including Kodiak brown bears, Syrian bears and black bears on their 100 acre estate in Otisville, New York. Most were rescued as cubs from breeding programs or nature reserves that closed down.

    Gorgeous, fierce Eagle Owl
She's in captivity, but in unusual circumstances; her captor gives her free rein, which is quite dangerous.

Owls can bite and grab, because they have CLAWS!
    Dec 23, 2017
    Yoll
"After watching my videos about Yoll the eagle owl, many people wish to have one as a pet. I can't explain why critical thinking and logic simply switch off in their brains, and I get lots of questions about where to buy an eagle-owl, not only from kids, but also from adults.
Do not get an eagle-owl as a pet, period! It's a dangerous bird. Cats and dogs can be dangerous too, but many people know how to raise and train them properly or hire professionals for the task, like canine handlers, for example. People who know how to raise an eagle owl are extremely rare, and you're definitely not one of them. Such irresponsible actions will result in death or disability of the bird and serious trauma for humans.
Do not acquire wild predators if you lack the skills and knowledge to handle them.
Yoll and her experience of living with humans is a one-of-a-kind miracle. Ornithologists from other European countries tell me that they study my videos to learn more about bird behaviour, since in their countries it's illegal to keep a bird of prey in the house.
I, unfortunately, have to learn from my own mistakes, because I haven't yet found another person as crazy as me to live and sleep on a regular basis in the same room with an unfastened adult eagle owl."

The lady above is obviously well trained and takes good care of her owl. But at the same time, isn't it sad to see that majestic bird sitting on a windowsill, seemingly all day?

It kinda breaks the heart to see him looking out the window towards the life he should be having.

Agreed, but apparently the owl is not wholly discontent with her lot. I think sometimes animals volunteer to do things they would not ordinarily do for the sake of humankind--in this case, perhaps to educate us into understanding more about owls, which are such fascinating creatures.

I think this is the most surreal video I ever filmed. And it's absolutely not staged. Yt the scops owl flew into the terrarium when I was cleaning it. While I went to get the camera, Murloc joined in, and then the party started...
The lizard wasn't trying to bite the scops owl. She just catches cockroaches using her sticky tongue.
Murloc later got out of the terrarium himself, while Yt had to be removed forcefully, as she didn't want to leave."

"Would the owl fly away if it's not tethered? Yoll spent 5 hours "free" on her own."

    Rescued Great Horned Owl
Owl Missed The Man Who Saved Her So Much She Couldn’t Stop Hugging Him
    Jun 28, 2016

"Gigi is an owl that got to Mississippi’s Wild at Heart Rescue after suffering a significant head trauma. She was thought to been hit by a car, plus she had a condition similar to pneumonia in humans. Her condition was poor. The staff of Wild at Heart did everything possible and impossible to help the bird. But it was Douglas Pojeky who became a real friend to the bird. So when Pojeky had to go visit his family and later came back, he was surprised by owl’s reaction. She was so happy to know her friend had returned she would dance on his arm and keep hugging him!"

Meet The Deadliest Cat On Earth

    By Andrea Powell

At first sight, this cat looks more like a cuddly kitten than a huntress. The adorable face and small size only disguises the cat’s greatest talent…hunting.

Africa’s smallest cat, the black-footed cat, is also the world’s deadliest. Weighing in at only three to five pounds, these cats are a force to be reckoned with. They have a 60% success rate when hunting, which is the highest among all wild cats. In comparison, the remarkably effective housecat has a hunting success rate of 32%, and a lone lion succeeds just 18% of the time.

This black-footed cat named Gyra hunts in the Karoo Desert in South Africa. According to the BBC, she may walk up to 20 miles in a night to hunt for prey.

She is a mother and has a kitten that is relying on her to provide food. The kitten stays back at the nest for safety, which is a burrow in the ground.

According to Big Cat Rescue, “The underside of the paw and the paw pads are black. That is where their name comes from.” The cats seek shelter in burrows and are not tree climbers.

Just like us, she has her preference when it comes to food. Her favorite is gerbils. However, she will eat small birds and any rodent she can find in the desert.

So how are they so precise on their hunt? Black-footed cats stalk their prey and wait for the perfect moment to pounce. The key is to wiggle and get as low as possible to the ground with their legs tucked under them. Their legs act like springs and allow them to leap high in the air to capture the prey.

These cats are as deadly as they are adorable. It is rare to see one, as they are nocturnal and solitary unless it is mating season. However, you may be lucky enough to see a female raising a kitten, like the mother Gyra in this video.

Check out this video to watch the rare black-footed cat hunt and interact with her kitten.

Thousands of camels in South Australia will be shot dead from helicopters as a result of extreme heat and drought.

A five-day cull started on Wednesday, as Aboriginal communities in the region have reported large groups of camels damaging towns and buildings.

"They are roaming the streets looking for water. We are worried about the safety of the young children", says Marita Baker, who lives in the community of Kanypi.

Some feral horses will also be killed.

How Patsy the Wonder Dog saved her flock of sheep as bushfires raged

Meet Patsy - now known as the Corryong Wonder Dog.

When the fire closed in on the tiny Victoria town, in the early hours of New Year’s Eve, Patsy sprang into action to herd her 900 sheep into a safe paddock away from the moving fire front.

“I’d have been stuffed without Patsy,” owner Stephen Hill told SBS News.

“She’s earned front-seat privileges for the rest of her life.”

Despite the heat and terrifying conditions, Mr Hill said Patsy kept her cool and kept an eye on her charges, even as smoke blanketed the property.

While the property lost several sheds, only a handful of sheep were killed during the firestorm.

“She’s been very spoiled after that,” Mr Hill said.

News of the pooch’s heroics has travelled across the world, with calls coming in from farms in the USA, Canada and the UK.

Lemurs, the most beautiful of primates, native only to the island of Madagascar. There are about 100 different species and 90% of those are facing extinction because of rapid deforestation on the island.

Sifafka lemus have long legs they use to leap from tree to tree, and were probably walking on two legs long before homo erectus did, although, they walk sideways:

The Indri lemurs can really fill a forest with sound.

The most famous species, the ringtail lemurs, absolutely beautiful.
