    Default Ufoartwork

Hi all, some of you may remember my site ufoartwork.com which looked at evidence for UFOs/ETs in ancient art. Well after a long hiatus I have resurrected it. Now known as www.ufoartwork.co.uk

The one old painting that has always made me stop and wonder....Glorification of the Eucharist...for the artist or whoever commisioned the painting to have the mind that envisioned a satellite type view of the earth, or whatever it is suppose to be.

It is one of those things where "if you could have access to their conversation".

I have to thank Marodobus at ATS for his painstaking research in this field, presented here. I feel it needs to be presented as an intelligent counter-point. I too, before realising the importance of symbols and strict artistic rules, thought that UFO's where depicted in many of these religious paintings.

This thread will explain why what people think of as UFO's in religious art is incorrect. There are no UFO's depicted in these paintings. I'm still open to the idea that other, older paintings elude to strange things in the sky, just not religious art.

It is important to bear in mind the state of painting and art in those times. There were schools of painting with strict guidelines and traditions. Certain objects were always depicted in the same manner by adherents of these schools. Keep this in mind.

    Attachment 40747

This is the painting i most often see cited as an example of UFO's in these paintings. The theory is that the two objects behind Jesus, which are enlarged in the borrom corners, are obvious UFO's
    They are not.
This painting is done in the so-called "Byzantine" style. These traditions had guidelines. A common guideline in Byzantine-style paintings concerns always showing the same two objects in the sky behind Christ in depictions of the Crucifixion. These objects are the sun and moon, many times depicted with human faces. These are used to represent light/positivity and dark/negativity.

Here are other examples of Byzantine-style depictions of the Crucifixion, depicting the sun and moon in the same position:

    Attachment 40748Attachment 40750Attachment 40749

Another painting often cited as evidence is the following:

    Attachment 40751

The objects/people in the top two corners are often cited as being UFO's or spaceships with people inside navigating them. Obvious, right?
But once again, this is similar to the previous example. In this case, however, the sun and moon were anthropomorphized. Also note that, like the previous examples, one is red and one is blue, depicting the sun and moon as human-like figures.

There are many examples of this in paintings and sculptures of that time. Here are a few:

    Attachment 40752Attachment 40753

This is often cited as a depiction of a UFO, as well:

    Attachment 40754

Let's look at a clearer picture of this painting:

    Attachment 40755

It can now be seen that this "disc" shooting rays from the sky is actually a cloud, within which are two circles of angels, shining divine light upon Mary. A cloud full of angels shining holy light upon this particular event was a very common depiction:

How about the so-called "Sputnik" painting?

    Attachment 40757

This is often described, as i said, as being a depiction of a Sputnik-like satellite of UFO, complete with two "antennas."

Note that we have Jesus, God, and a dove. This is how the Holy Trinity was often depicted, with the Holy Ghost taking the form of a dove.
Two other things were also common in paintings of the Holy Trinity: God and/or Jesus holding the Celestial Sphere which represents the universe, and Jesus and/or God holding wands.
A common characteristic of the Celestial Sphere is that the Sun is sometimes visible on it, as are lines representing the lines of longitude and latitude.
The Sphere AND wands being held by Jesus and/or God are not ALWAYS present together, although usually they are. But at least some of these characteristics were almost always present.

In the "Sputnik" painting, we simply have a case where the position in which God and Jesus are holding their wands makes it appear as if the wands are projecting from the sphere itself.

    Attachment 40758

    Other examples:

Celestial Sphere present, God holding wand:
    Attachment 40759

God holding celestial sphere, both holding wands:
    Attachment 40760

    Sphere present, both holding wands:
    Attachment 40761

There is more to come if any are interested.

    Regards.

Note the person in the background staring up at the "UFO." This man is a shepherd. How do we know this? Because we know what event this painting is depicting, and we know the rules of these depictions according to the RIGID ARTISTIC DISCIPLINE the artist was following.
In the art of this particular tradition, with its concrete rules, we often see this same event portrayed in the background of depictions of the Nativity such as this one.
It symbolises "The Announcement to the Shepards"

Quote "and there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, an angel of the Lord come upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear ye not: for behold!, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you was born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord".
Now, according to this rigid discipline, how was the Announcement to the Shepards supposed to be depicted? In the same ways that angels and divinity were symbolised in some of the paintings i cited earlier: as either a luminous cloud, or a luminous cloud containing angels.

So, let's take a look at a few other painting of the Nativity by artists who were also members of this same discipline.
Wouldn't it be weird if these paintings also showed a shepherd staring into the sky at some sort of luminous cloud........

    Attachment 40766

    Attachment 40769

    Attachment 40768

Note that, time and time again in these painting depicting the same biblical event by artists of the same tradition, we see a man shielding his eyes while gazing up at the object. Note, time and time again, they are gazing at some sort of luminous cloud

Hi All, i think the irony is that if you put the "UFO religious artworks" to one side you still have lots of textual evidence of UFOs in the Bible, clothed in terms like Chariots, wheels of Ezekiel etc. So you would expect to find aerial phenomena in religious artworks. Someone might say it's religious symbolism...

Also, if UFOs are flying round today, the chances are they have been flying around for thousands of years , in fact there is another section on my site which looks at actual sightings in history.

Thanks for the comments Pabranno. I lost interest in the subject a while back but finding my mojo again. My aim is to try and get an Ancient Aliens episode on my collection. Back in about 2005 a well known presenter from AA emailed me to do one but I was having one of my loosing interest in Ufology moments so turned him down. I've emailed the History channel recently so fingers crossed.
