Default Handbook for Space Pioneers, is this book for real?

I picked up this book from a secondhand bookshop, I initially thought it was a boy's annual but no it's a manual designed to help you select which of the eight colonizable planets is most appropriate for you. I had to buy it to fully check it out. First published in 1979 it give full details of all the planets, environment, gravity, day length, year length, etc and an application form to enter the pioneering program. The organisation behind this book is the Galactic Association of Intelligent Life. So on checking this organisation out on the internet they have a website gailearth.com and Facebook page, interesting. The book is also currently available on Amazon.

So what do others think, is Handbook for Space Pioneers by L Stephen & Roy L Wysack for real?

Two Amazon reviews from this page:
    • One of my favorite books as I became a teenager, so it was great to find a copy here. A sci-fi book that dares to realistically imagine the future discovery/colonization of other worlds. Easy to read and engrossing, the book uses real science (late-70s era) to develop 9 worlds worth exploring. The variety of planets covers a range of what we might encounter in lifeforms and living conditions. But the real thrill was the emigration application at the back of the book (and the reply promptly received). The author and illustrator are now on the web and rumor has it there may be a website companion to the book in the works.
    • My favourite book of all time. No kidding. It's not a picture book with glossy images, but a compelling fictional description of a believable time in the not too distant future told with a non fictional mindset. Geographical and biological descriptions of colonised planets with a mix of both factoid presentations and PoV stories from colonists themselves. The maturity of each colony is dependent on the amount of time they have been settled, mixed with the ease with which the local landscape can be conquered. The worst thing about this book is that there was no follow up or expansion on the universe that I could ever find. I would sure love to be proved wrong. Think of this book as the opposite of the Stewart Cowley 'Terran Trade Authority' books - which builds small stories around wonderful coloured art. This book has small bits of line-art wrapped around wonderfully colourful stories.

On the Amazon UK site some pages can viewed.

Personally I think it's fiction but sometimes an element of truth is hidden in fiction. I'm just interested in others views.
