    Default Little Help Please

for the last several months i've been getting this pop-up on my laptop that i can't get rid of.

    it's driving me mental.

    it says:
an update is available for McAfee Safe Connect. Would you like to download it?

there are 2 boxes. one for "yes" and another for "no". i click "no", and then the damned thing comes back 30 seconds later. same if i click "yes".

it's already popped up twice during this very short post.

it's truly enraging. my options at this point seem limited to a new computer or suicide.

    any tips?

Virus of some sort.I have the same problem 11 tears ago with my Win XP SP3 desktop, but different message.First I've done the same as you did, cliked on no first to get rid of the pop up window, then yes when immediately the same window appeared. After several clicks with the same results,my conclusion was that my desktop have "problems" and tried to solved with available tolls I have at that time.No result. Finally I've send it to maintenance and I don't remember what the guy told me what the problem was but the problem was solved.

Mike, I have had some issues like that and searched for an app that would remove the specific popup or problem. Eventually I would find the correct app and use it to remove the problem.

For example I entered: how to remove an update is available for McAfee Safe Connect. Would you like to download it?

I just did and found several forums and other places that address that issue.

Hi Mike. Something similar happened on my iPhone recently. I did a search about the problem, and long story short, you might try going to wherever you go on your system to "clear history and website data" or whatever equivalent wording you find. The search I did referred to it as "pop-up spam." Don't know much about these things, but it worked for me. I have no idea why.

Edit to add: Oops. As Chris mentioned below, the reboot after clearing is important!

    Hi Mike,

If none of the other suggestions work you could try these options in the sequence suggested.

    1. Do a malware check as opposed to virus check.

    2. If you have McAfee uninstall it and then reinstall.

3, Do a system restore through the control panel. Choose a date prior to when the problem started. Any programmes you have installed since then may require being reinstalled afterwards but your documents, images etc, will be unaffected, however I would still back them up.

Hopefully you won't need to do this last one.

    4. Do a factory restore. Absolutely ugly option but would get the job done. It will mean backing up everything and reinstalling everything, there may well be a proprietary option on the laptop to do this.

    Hi Mike,

I hope you're making progress. If this were me I'd have probably done a system rollback as soon as I noticed this. Even though this has been ongoing for a few months, there's a small possibility you still may have a restore point from before this happened

If you'd like to avoid this happening again, my best suggestion is taking away your own admin rights. I suggest this all the time for people who get viruses, but no one listens to me!

You can have two windows accounts, one with Admin access which you'll rarely need to use (don't forget the password!) and one with regular user access.

For everyday use you can login as the regular user, and that way nothing sneaky will be able to install itself.

Additionally having a virus scanner that notifies you when something sneaky is happening is nice too. I still use the free trial version of Webroot (link). It nags a little bit but not too much... The trial makes you remove problems yourself, but the main thing is it finds suspicious things and notifies you about them. IE: During uninstall process I sometimes get notified of my startup being modified, and I allow this because I triggered the uninstall.

    Hi Mike,
I'm sorry to hear that you are experiencing these irritating pop-ups.
I'm a new member here so not 100% sure how to add links yet but wanted to pass on that you may want to look at using/trying superantispyware which has a free version available and I use it once per week. It clears all the usual junk cookies and the like but has removed viruses for me as well.
Just type into google superantispyware and you'll find the free version and download.
I do hope this helps alongside the great advice from other members in previous posts.
    Cheers, Andrew

thanks everyone for chiming it! very much appreciated!

till now i'd tried so many things (which i should have listed), but what finally worked was simply clearing my history (special thanks to Erthevessel and Chris)

...so much nicer now not having to deal with that nonsense

Cookies and logons create an on going link.
I use ad block and the moment I log on any site--new or old I get a message asking me to remove add block.
This shows an instant feed back they have to my browser.
So its good to clear history regularly--logons seem ok but if there is a real issue such as Mike had its best to remove all.

yes ,it would have been excessive

it is the small things that tend to send me spiraling into an existential crisis though, weirdly enough. a life threatening disease i can deal with....but when my shoe lace snaps when i'm late for work, or when i keep getting mcafee pop ups, i tend to lose my mind.

As a habit, I clear my history after almost every site I go to, especially You Tube, Google or Yahoo.
I also clear it after leaving Avalon, and I clear it when I go off line.
    It's simple enough to do.
I also use CCleaner (free version) daily.
    Paranoid? Maybe. lol
Works so far. (Geez, hope I didn't just jinx myself, Murphy's Law ya know?!)
