My spouse and I just started ingesting baking soda, just a 1/2 tsp in a cup of water (warm to dissolve and then add cold) with a squeeze of lemon. Definitely tastes salty.
I use it for teeth brushing too and I scrub stainless steel sink with it and vinegar.
I remember reading Patti Smith’s memoir and she used to use it for laundry detergent when she was penniless.

Thought I should share this thimble-full of information I read recently for those of Avalon in the fossil age group. It goes like this. As you grow older, the amount of stomach acid decreases, which is actually the cause of "acid re-flux." Therefore, if you have acid re-flux you might wish to keep your distance from at least daily or frequent use of bi-carbonate of soda. However, all you younger outdoor types may not get to that point for some time and can indulge. Those with re-flux can use apple-cider vinegar to shore up the bad effects of low stomach acid. I am only parroting those who claim to know, so don't sue me if you falter.

You could use a little vinegar, a teaspoon of the powder, add your vinegar does it fizz and bubble? Chances are good it is sodium bicarbonate if so, but ginergly taste it, (haha) you know the taste of bicarb?

Recently I had a small but very painful ulcer which I thought was an abscess.
I read somewhere that a teaspoon of baking powder mixed in a little warm water and rinsed around the affected area, was an excellent remedy.
    And so it was!
In only three days of swilling once a day, the ulcer had gone...

There's a lot of advice out there about drinking baking soda water (alkaline) or eating lemons (acid) to alkalize the body. But the body tightly regulates PH levels to its own strict requirements, and it will just reverse anything you do to change that:

Baking soda has a fishy taste to me. If you wanna keep your body alkaline stay away from acidic foods like meat. Fruits and Veggies are awesome.

baking soda its nice, but there are other salt much more nice "without sodium"

    calcium cabonate (CaCO3)

the organism always needs calcium, and too much sodium is bad for health

magnesium carbonate is good too, but it's bitter and also can't overdo

Hi Bill, 1/2 teaspoon twice per day (max 3 times per day). Make sure you take it first thing in the morning a couple of hours before you eat.
I would take pure lemon juice from one large lemon first thing in the morning on empty stomach again 1 - 2hours before eating, as that has i think a better and more natural effect than baking soda. Then take Baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon mid afternoon, and before bedtime 2cl of Apple cider vinegar as that cleans your body inside while you sleep. all above to be taken separately in a glass of water.

I use half a tsp bicarb soda with one tsp ascorbic acid a few times a day to ward off colds/ flu or as part of a treatment for anything at all. The bicarb reduces the acidity of the vitamin and gives it a nice fizz.

Hi, Folks: here's a sincere question that may make some of you laugh
I'm chuckling because you imply there's a chance it might NOT be baking soda

    Of course it's baking soda!!!

I agree with EFO that you should probably toss it though (edit: even if it IS baking soda). When in doubt..... throw it out!!!!

I had ulcer couple of years ago. It went away with prescription drugs but it was much later when I tried baking soda and came to conclusion it works wonders for heart burns. I still have those occasionally but only half tea spoon of table spoon makes them go away. Baking soda is also very cheap compared to those "real drugs".
