    Default All about baking soda

Hi, Folks: here's a sincere question that may make some of you laugh.

I have some white powder in a big jar, from quite a while back. No label.

I think it's baking soda. But how do I test to see if it really is?

    Hello Bill, by tasting it.
It should give you a slight salty taste with some kind of little sparkling
Sorry, forgot to mention - dissolved in water of course

If you have some Cider Vinegar mix a tea spoon of this with same amount baking soda, if its the real deal it will froth up.

I just went out to the kitchen to taste some, and I agree with Michel, a littele salty and some not sparkling, but in lack of a better word for it , ok,

"Add baking soda(NaHCO3) in water. Dissolve it properly. Then take red litmus paper and dip a part of it in the solution. You will observe that the red colour changes to blue."

Agreed. Did you ever make volcanoes as a child, with the "eruption" from pouring baking soda into vinegar? That's what you're looking for.

hmmm - wonder how baking soda can be distinguished from baking powder, though? (Baking powder has aluminum added, I think) And Borax would probably react to acids too.

Baking powder contains starch, which is insoluble.

    Baking soda is completely soluble

Take a small bowl, and put 1/8 tsp of the substance in the bottom.

    Add water.

If the substance is bicarbonate of soda, the solution will be completely clear.

If it is baking powder, a cloudy/powdery residue will remain.

(You can also use excess vinegar which gives the same results.)

    If it tastes of:

    Soap: Soda
Very faintly of soap and faintly of starch and slightly fizzes in your mouth: Baking powder

I wouldn't taste it! It could be something toxic, you never know.

Try the vinegar method, or any acid, really. Beyond that, I have no idea how else to identify it.

Thank you, all! I have cider vinegar, and also litmus paper. (Doh! I forgot about that. )

It just passed every test. I very much appreciate that.

So I'll change my question! To ensure my body's healthily alkaline (but it probably is: I eat a lot of fruit), how much baking soda should I take (mixed with water) each day just as a supplement?

It's so humid here that I keep mine in a glass jar with a tight fitting lid. Been through the taste test myself

I take baking soda as well and use about 1/4 teaspoon in a half glass of water 2-3 times a day to space it out, it's pretty salty to me and that's as much as I can tolerate. Various bugs, including cancer, do well in a more acidic environment so it helps to alkalinize the body.

When I had an ulcer a few years ago, it got me through rough times. I even carried it with me in a small container for emergencies.

I take 1 teaspoon of baking soda per half glass of water daily either 1 hour before meal or after a meal. According to this article, a 70 kg person could take 15 grams (which is almost 4 teaspoon) of sodium bicarbonate:

Quote Moreover, if the optimum content of bicarbonate ingestion is close to 300 mg per kg of body, this means for a 70 kg sportsman a dose of about 15 g of bicarbonate. Accordingly, the ingestion of water alone will help reach an efficient dose of bicarbonate, if a large volume of water is taken several hours before exercising. It could contribute to lowering the bicarbonate load to be ingested and avoiding the possible gastrointestinal side-effects.
According to the book, "Sodium Bicarbonate VS Cancer" (excerpt attached) sodium bicarbonate has these benefits:

Thank you, all! I have cider vinegar, and also litmus paper. (Doh! I forgot about that. )

It just passed every test. I very much appreciate that.

So I'll change my question! To ensure my body's healthily alkaline (but it probably is: I eat a lot of fruit), how much baking soda should I take (mixed with water) each day just as a supplement?
If you are not sure what it is,throw it and buy a labeled baking soda for your own safety.

    Please don't drink that.

From my (incomplete) research, our body is constantly checking and altering our blood's acidity/alkalinity, toward its 'own idea' of homeostasis. So, I would think that taking a 1/4 teaspoon at 4 different times of the day would work better than one dose of one teaspoon once a day.

Another thought (several mentioned) is about timing, versus meal time. Our stomach acid is pretty extremely acidic, naturally and normally. So, I would think (and read something about) making sure our stomach acid is at its normal pH before we eat a meal. That would tell me to take the bicarb maybe near bedtime for a single daily dose, or at least a couple of hours after meals if taking several, smaller doses.

I should be able to cite my own experiences with this (other than stupidly taking lots of "Tums", for a decade or two), but I have only taken bicarbonate of soda a few times. This is a good reminder to me to actually start making this a habit. So, thanks!

    Hi, Mr.Ryan,
I would suggest you to start wit 1/3 teaspoon in a glass, covered with boiling water, steering well just to "extinguish" the baking soda (not extinguished causes strong reaction with acids and sometimes a health problems), than add more room-temperature water from a bottle (presumably it is with a higher PH) and drink it twice (or more times) a day -morning and evening- before eating anything for 20-30 min. After couple of days you could drink 1/2 teaspoon, than 1 teaspoon and so on, as much as you want.
I, personally, drink 1/2 teaspoon already almost a year! Benefits are real!
    Best regards

Best way of keeping an alkaline body PH, and the easiest way, is with The jar from alkanatur. I use it for 4 years already and my PH is at 7,8 in the morning. the filtering jar is also eliminating heavy metals, chlorine, flouride, pesticides, and ionises and antioxides the water.
As well a green vegetables diet is helping. with all that no Backing soda needed.
But for a first treatment two times a teaspoon of backing soda morning and evening disolved in a glass of water

Bill, if you are going to consume any sort of product that is highly alkaline, get some ph strips and check your body acidity at least once a day by urinating on the strips, but twice (or more) is better if you are drinking a solution. You want to use consumption of vegetables and fruit, in the main, to alkalize your blood, but you should use the strips to make sure to do not get too alkaline or get too acidic if you are directly using a chemical to alkalize your body. You can get these on Amazon for about $8-9 for a bottle of strips that will last about 2-3 months depending on your usage of the strips.
