Germany coronavirus: Hundreds arrested in German 'anti-corona' protests

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-53959552

Police in Berlin have arrested 300 demonstrators during protests against Germany's coronavirus restrictions.

Some 38,000 people took to the streets in the city for mostly peaceful demonstrations.

Later hundreds of protesters, many from the far right, tried to storm the Reichstag, the home of Germany's federal parliament.

A number of people were arrested and German politicians condemned the attack as "shameful" and "unacceptable".

Some of those involved had insignia from the far-right Reichsbürger (Reich Citizens) movement. Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz said: "Nazi symbols as well as Reichsbürger and Imperial German flags have no place in the German Bundestag."

Earlier some 200 people were arrested at one rally, which the authorities blamed on right-wing agitators who were said to have thrown stones and bottles.

Rallies protesting against coronavirus restrictions took place in other European cities with some demonstrators calling the virus a hoax.

Thousands gathered in London's Trafalgar Square to protest against issues including coronavirus restrictions and 5G. Signs reading "masks are muzzles" and "new normal = new fascism" were held up.

Similar protests took place in Paris, Vienna and Zurich.
What happened in Berlin during the day?

The rally had originally been banned but a court eventually allowed it to go ahead.

Police ordered one group near the Brandenburg Gate to disperse for flouting safety rules, then arrested 200 after stones and bottles were thrown.

"Unfortunately, we have no other option," Berlin police said on Twitter. "All the measures taken so far have not led to compliance with the conditions."

Protesters were closely packed in places, and sat together on the ground at one point.

A second group of about 30,000 met peacefully close by to hear speeches.

Among those arrested was cookery author and conspiracy theorist Attila Hildmann, who had addressed crowds through a loudspeaker.

Although Germany has so far not seen the wave of cases affecting some parts of Europe, its infection rate has been growing. New case numbers are reaching highs last seen in April.
Who was involved in the Berlin protests?

Mr Geisel said people protesting outside the Russian Embassy on Unter den Linden were "right-wing extremists" and that seven police officers had been injured.

Some protesters then broke through a cordon at the Reichstag building and were dispersed by police using pepper spray.

German news site Deutsche Welle reported that flags and T-shirts supporting the far right could be seen among the crowd.

The demonstration to the west of the Gate at the Victory Column was organised by the Stuttgart-based movement Querdenken 711 (or Lateral Thinking 711). The group has more than 16,000 followers on Facebook and communicates largely through encrypted messaging service Telegram.

It believes that coronavirus regulations infringe on basic rights and freedoms enshrined in Germany's constitution and wants them to be lifted.

The group previously organised a protest in Berlin on 1 August dubbed the "day of freedom". Thousands joined, including some from the far right and some conspiracy theorists who do not believe Covid-19 exists.

Image caption Protesters near the Victory Column hold a banner reading "first wave, second wave, permanent wave?"

The protests have also gained support from Robert F Kennedy Jr. The anti-vaccination campaigner, also the son of assassinated US Democratic presidential hopeful Robert F Kennedy and nephew of assassinated US President John F Kennedy, is at the demonstrations in Berlin.

Mr Kennedy told the crowd at the Victory Column that his uncle had famously addressed Berlin in 1963 to counter totalitarianism and that "today Berlin is again the front against totalitarianism", warning of a surveillance state and the power of 5G phone networks.

Photos shared online also showed flags and slogans linked to the conspiracy theory QAnon. The wide-ranging, unfounded conspiracy theory says that US President Donald Trump is waging a secret war against elite Satan-worshipping paedophiles in government, business and the media, among other claims.

    What is QAnon?

Image caption The protests have drawn a range of different groups

Participants also included families and children. Some people have said they just want the right to protest.

One demonstrator, Stefan, a 43-year-old Berlin resident, told Agence France-Presse: "I'm not an extreme right-wing sympathiser, I'm here to defend our fundamental freedoms."

Counter-protests against the main march also took place, with about 100 people at one rally. "You are marching with Nazis and Fascists," shouted some participants, according to broadcaster RBB.
    What are Germany's Covid-19 measures?

The country was one of the most effective in enforcing the framework of response referred to as prevent, detect, contain and treat.

It has been particularly effective in keeping the death rate among the over 70s lower.

It began relaxing physical distancing in early April but continued to track infections, which have seen a rise in August.

On Thursday, Chancellor Angela Merkel and the 16 federal states introduced a minimum €50 (£45; $59) fine for failing to wear a face mask where ordered. A ban on major public events was also extended until next year.

Mrs Merkel said: "We will have to live with this virus for a long time to come. It is still serious." She said it would become more challenging in the winter.

Germany has recorded 242,000 infections, fewer than the other major European nations. Its figure of 9,297 deaths is considerably lower than the numbers in Russia,

Dr. ‘Coronavirus Hunter’ Ralph Baric: Preparing Us for a Pandemic? Or Putting Us in Peril of One?
    Organic Consumers Association
    by Alexis Baden-Mayer
    August 26, 2020
    https://www.organicconsumers.org/blo...g-us-peril-one

EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the third article in our ‘Gain of Function Hall of Shame’ series highlighting key players in gain-of-function research.

    Dr. ‘Coronavirus Hunter’ Ralph Baric

"Guess what year this ScienceDaily headline appeared:

“New SARS-Like Virus Can Jump Directly from Bats to Humans, No Treatment Available.”

If you guessed 2020, you’re wrong. The article was published in 2015. The source was the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. That’s where scientist Ralph Baric, Ph.D, and a team that included Baric’s Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) colleague, Shi Zhengli, used genetic engineering and synthetic biology to create a “new bat SARS-like virus . . . that can jump directly from its bat hosts to humans.”

Baric is known as the Coronavirus Hunter. Zhengli’s nickname is Bat Woman.

The two are scientists whose work involves collecting samples of the nearly 5,000 coronaviruses in bat populations and manipulating them for the sole purpose of making them more infectious to humans.

Ostensibly, the research Baric and Zhengli conduct is intended to help scientists get ahead of any coronavirus that might have the potential to emerge as a human pathogen.

However, there is little evidence that this research has prepared us to meet the challenges of the current COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, there are suspicions that the research may have caused the virus.

As André Leu recently reported for Organic Consumers Association, Baric’s work on the coronavirus team began in 2001. That’s when he assembled a full-length mouse coronavirus—and then removed all the inserts that showed that the virus had been genetically engineered.

The following year, for the first time, a coronavirus jumped from animals to humans, causing a worldwide outbreak that resulted in 8,000 cases and nearly 800 deaths.

Baric and Zhengli’s 2015 project, “Generating Infectious Clones of Bat SARS-Like CoVs,” involved altering a SARS-CoV virus so it could latch onto the ACE2 receptor, a protein that provides the entry point for the coronavirus to hook into and infect a wide range of human cells. (Some evidence suggests that ACE2 receptors may be more numerous in patients with hypertension, diabetes and coronary heart disease, one reason these comorbidities may contribute to susceptibility to COVID-19).

Baric and Zhengli’s work was “notable not only because there is no treatment” for this newly created virus, ScienceDaily reported, “but also because it highlights an ongoing debate over the government's decision to suspend all gain-of-function experiments on a variety of select agents earlier this year.”

Gain of function experiments aim to improve the ability of a pathogen to cause disease. “Select agents” are biological agents and toxins that have the potential to pose a severe threat to public health and safety.

The “government's decision to suspend all gain-of-function experiments on a variety of select agents” refers to the Obama administration’s moratorium on gain-of-function research, officially called the 2014 U.S. Government Deliberative Process Research Funding Pause on Selected Gain-of-Function Research Involving Influenza, MERS and SARS Viruses.

Baric, Zhengli and their team acknowledged in their published study, “A SARS-Like Cluster of Circulating Bat Coronaviruses Shows Potential for Human Emergence,” that their work was allowed only because it was initiated before the 2014 funding pause on gain-of-function research involving SARS viruses, and also because the National Institutes of Health approved an exemption requested by the researchers.

The Baric-Zhengli team’s work was immediately criticized. Richard Ebright, a molecular biologist and biodefense expert at Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey, told Nature: “The only impact of this work is the creation, in a lab, of a new, non-natural risk.”

Playing dumb . . . to protect the guilty?

On May 25, 2020, after the emergence of COVID-19, Baric was interviewed by North Carolina Public Radio. In the interview, he was asked this:

“There is a controversy about the laboratory in Wuhan, China. Do they have the kind of safety precautions that you have at the University of North Carolina, and do you have any thoughts about whether this virus was a natural bat-to-human transfer? Or was there something a little bit more, perhaps, insidious involved?”

    Baric responded:

“Well, of course, the answers to those questions are in China and it’s very difficult to imagine that anyone else would know the answer to that question except for people in China.

“But, I will say this about their facilities. They have a state-of-the-art BSL3/BSL4 facility that was designed and actually discussed with groups here in the United States that also have BSL3 and BSL4 facilities and so the design and the function of that facility, in terms of its safety, has been well reviewed. Exactly how they work in that facility is something that would be very difficult for a Westerner to know unless they had access to the facility and it’s very difficult to get into any nation’s high-containment BSL3/BSL4 facility. So, I don’t know the answer to that question.

“The main problem that the Institute of Virology has is that the outbreak occurred in close proximity to that institute. That institute has the best collection of virologists in the world, that have gone out and sought out and isolated and sampled bat species throughout Southeast Asia. And so they have a very large collection of viruses in their laboratory. Proximity is a problem. It makes it look bad in any event, and there’s no way to stop that speculation unless China decides to do an open transparent review of what was in the facility and what was going on at that time.”

Why is Baric so quick to implicate the lab he collaborates with—without acknowledging his connection to it?

Why does Baric position the WIV as the only possible lab source of the virus when, as a coronavirus researcher, he knows of dozens of labs around the world—including his own—that collect, store and manipulate bat viruses?

Baric claims that it would be “very difficult for a Westerner to know” how scientists work in the Wuhan lab “unless they had access to the facility, and it’s very difficult to get into any nation’s high-containment BSL3/BSL4 facility.”

Is it possible that Baric was unaware of the news the Washington Post broke on April 14, 2020? The Post reported:

“Two years before the novel coronavirus pandemic upended the world, U.S. Embassy officials visited a Chinese research facility in the city of Wuhan several times and sent two official warnings back to Washington about inadequate safety at the lab, which was conducting risky studies on coronaviruses from bats.”

It seems unlikely that Baric would have missed the Washington Post story, given that the State Department cables cited by the Post specifically mentioned the work Baric had done in collaboration with the Wuhan lab:

“‘Most importantly,’ the cable states, ‘the researchers also showed that various SARS-like coronaviruses can interact with ACE2, the human receptor identified for SARS-coronavirus. This finding strongly suggests that SARS-like coronaviruses from bats can be transmitted to humans to cause SARS-like diseases. From a public health perspective, this makes the continued surveillance of SARS-like coronaviruses in bats and study of the animal-human interface critical to future emerging coronavirus outbreak prediction and prevention.’

“‘The research was designed to prevent the next SARS-like pandemic by anticipating how it might emerge. But even in 2015, other scientists questioned whether Shi’s team was taking unnecessary risks. In October 2014, the U.S. government had imposed a moratorium on funding of any research that makes a virus more deadly or contagious, known as ‘gain-of-function’ experiments.”

One way to excuse Baric’s omissions is to presume that he didn’t want to add fuel to the fire of “debunked conspiracy theories,” namely that the virus “was spread from North Carolina to China, Italy and elsewhere in the U.S. by the “Deep State” in a plot ‘to destroy the Trump economy.’”

There’s one omission that is very hard to excuse: Baric was in Wuhan in 2018, delivering a plenary lecture at the 8th International Symposium on Emerging Viral Diseases sponsored by the Wuhan Institute of Virology. As he says, proximity is a problem.

But this side-steps the real issue, which is this: Regardless of whether this virus occurred naturally or escaped from a lab, is it really a good idea to manipulate viruses to make them more deadly?

Presumably, Baric would justify his coronavirus research by showing that the millions of dollars the U.S. government invested in his gain-of-function experiments prepared us for COVID-19, making it easier, quicker and cheaper to develop effective medical countermeasures.

Unfortunately, the opposite appears to be true: All those millions spent on Baric’s research has turned out to be a dangerous boondoggle.

Public scientist or private drug developer?

Baric works at a public university. His research is funded by U.S. (taxpayer-funded) government grants. So in theory, this should create the ideal conditions for him to do scientific work that needn’t be geared toward churning out commercially successful products.

In reality, the ideal of public science as a social function, where the scientist’s only commitment is to improving human health and knowledge through discovery, was discarded back in 1980.

In her book, “University Inc.: The Corruption of Higher Education,” Jennifer Washburn explains how in 1980, a law known as Bayh-Dole, was passed which allowed universities to own property rights to federally funded research and to license that research to industry in exchange for royalties.

Since then, the worth of scientists has come to be measured more by products than publications, and scientists like Baric have channelled their discoveries toward drug development. Scientists also have been incentivized to take on potentially lucrative partnerships with pharmaceutical companies, or to launch their own startups.

Now, the drugs Baric has developed—and stands to profit from—are at the center of a Trump administration scandal involving billions of dollars in COVID-19 drug and vaccine development contracts going to Trump’s cronies, his family and his administration’s top officials.

Let’s connect the dots between the Bayh-Dole Act, Baric and two drugs being pushed as cures or treatments for COVID-19.

EIDD-2801 (now Merck’s MK-4482): Birth defects? No worries. Big Pharma helped pass a law that lets drugmakers off the hook

Rick Bright, former head of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), lost his job over a drug originally known as EIDD-2801, now known as Merck’s MK-4482. Here’s how that went down.

During a November 1, 2019 meeting, before the first cases (or at least, publicly known cases) of COVID-19 emerged, Bright was asked by his boss, Assistant Secretary of Preparedness and Response (ASPR), Robert Kadlec, and ASPR Senior Science Advisor, Christian Hassell, to stockpile EIDD-2801.

Kadlec brought friends in to make the case. Pharmaceutical industry lobbyist John Clerici and George Painter, director of the Emory Institute for Drug Development (EIDD—hence the drug’s name), along with president and CEO of Drug Innovation Ventures at Emory (DRIVE), declared during the meeting that EIDD-2801 was a “miracle cure” and a “cure-all” for influenza, Ebola and nearly every other virus. Painter said it could be “a great asset to national security.”

In reality, EIDD-2801 was just a drug that they hadn’t been able to pawn off on anyone in the private sector because it was associated with birth defect risks. Then along came the COVID-19 pandemic, and with it, new possibilities for EIDD-2801.

Why? Because if EIDD-2801 could be sold to the government as a pandemic, epidemic or bioterrorism countermeasure, there would be no need to worry about birth defects—thanks to legislation that Clerici had been instrumental in passing.

Under the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness (PREP) Act, a bill that Clerici was “pivotal” in drafting and passing, the government provides “substantial liability protections for makers and distributors of pandemic, epidemic, and bioterrorism countermeasures.”

Painter’s colleague, EIDD Executive Director Dennis Liotta, had developed EIDD-2801 when he and Raymond Schinazi, another Emory University scientist who has no connection to DRIVE, co-owned the pharmaceutical company Pharmasset. Because of the concern about birth defects, they dumped EIDD-2801 before they sold Pharmasset to Gilead Sciences in 2011, for $11.2 billion. As Schinazi told Science magazine, Pharmasset had abandoned EIDD-2801 back in 2003, after discovering its mutagenic properties.

Bright knew about these problems with reproductive toxicity in animals, including that some offspring from animals treated with EIDD-2801 had been born without teeth and without parts of their skulls.

Since Emory had already received $30 million in government funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Defense to fund toxicity studies and initial clinical trials, Bright suggested that they complete these studies and then, if they had evidence that the drug was safe, return to BARDA later.

“Thank goodness someone is raising the red flag,” about EIDD-2801, Schinazi told Science magazine. “You don’t develop a drug that’s mutagenic. Period.”

As Clerici and Painter were contemplating their next move, word of a virus spreading in Wuhan, China, was starting to make news. According to the EIDD-2801 origin story they told Chemical & Engineering News, Baric, one of Painter’s collaborators, immediately alerted Painter to the fact that the new pathogen was probably a coronavirus—one that EIDD-2801 could potentially combat.

Mark Denison, their collaborator at Vanderbilt University, told Chemical & Engineering News that the research team had known that a coronavirus outbreak was inevitable. Denison told the publication:

“Every single one of our grants, every single one of our papers predicted that this event was going to happen that’s occurring right now. The whole goal of our drug development was to plan for this.”

Painter told Chemical & Engineering News: “We thought, ‘Oh my god, it’s a coronavirus. We should be ready.’”

They didn’t have any new science, but in February 2020, Painter, Kadlec and others went back to Bright. He still wouldn’t budge. When Kadlec couldn’t pressure Bright to buy EIDD-2801, he removed him from BARDA.

With Bright out of the way, the campaign for EIDD-2801 continued.

In March 2020, Ridgeback Biotherapeutics, owned by Wayne Holman and Wendy Commins Holman, purchased an exclusive license to EIDD-2801 from DRIVE for an undisclosed amount.

In May 2020, Ridgeback flipped the drug, selling it to Merck, which renamed it MK-4482.

MK-4482 could become a blockbuster drug, stockpiled by governments and hospitals to treat COVID-19 and future coronavirus outbreaks. Painter told Chemical & Engineering News that ideally, MK-4482 would be administered once someone has been exposed to SARS-CoV-2—to prevent infection—or up to a week or so after someone has been infected.

Earnings and forecasts are up for Merck, in part because of anticipation of marketing MK-4482 as an oral antiviral Covid-19 treatment.

Painter has been promoting the idea of using MK-4482 in combination with another antiviral Baric works on, Remdesivir.

The better to hide any adverse reactions?

Remdesivir: The Ebola drug reject taxpayers have pent $70.5M on . . . so far

Remdesivir, like EIDD-2801, is a drug looking for a market. In January 2020, Fierce Biotech ran an article about Gilead’s plan to cash in othe the coronavirus pandemic with a drug that it hadn’t been able to make any money on yet:

“Gilead Sciences is considering repositioning . . . remdesivir as a treatment for the coronavirus now sweeping across parts of China. The antiviral last made headlines when Gilead tested it, with little success, as a treatment for Ebola virus.

“As happened during the Ebola outbreak, the surge in cases of infection with a potentially fatal strain of the coronavirus in parts of China has led to a flurry of statements from biotechs with assets they claim could help keep the virus under control.

“Based on previous outbreaks, few, if any, of the programs now being talked up will lead to drugs that make a difference, either therapeutically or commercially . . . Gilead has a drug that has already been tested in humans. That positions Gilead to respond more quickly to the outbreak, although it also leaves scope to doubt whether it has a drug capable of tackling coronavirus.

“Gilead pushed remdesivir forward quickly in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases in response to the West African Ebola virus epidemic that began in 2013. The R&D program culminated in a randomized controlled clinical trial that tested remdesivir and three other drugs in patients with Ebola.

“The trial found two of the drugs were more effective than remdesivir, putting an end to efforts to establish [it] as a treatment option in Ebola.”

Public Citizen estimates that taxpayers have, so far, contributed at least $70.5 million to develop remdesivir, and argues that if it turns out it works, Americans shouldn’t have to pay twice for it. Instead, remdesivir should be distributed to patients for free through a public health system.

But, this begs another question: Is all the money that has been invested in—and could be made from—this drug, preventing the government from being objective as to the drug’s actual promise?

Critics say Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, skewed results of the remdesivir trials—and still got weak results.

Meryl Nass, in her blog post, “Faking Results: Fauci's NIAID-paid Remdesivir Study Changed Its Outcome Measures Twice, in Order to Show Even a Whiff of Benefit,” writes:

“Fauci … has done the unthinkable in medicine: changed the goalposts, twice, on his remdesivir study in order to provide the appearance of benefit. Even then, benefit was quite small.”

This surely has nothing to do with the fact that at least eight members of the NIH panel that writes COVID guidelines have financial interests in Gilead Sciences.

The only conclusion one can reasonably draw from Baric’s story is that scientists who engage in risky gain-of-function research are much better at creating more dangerous viruses than they are at curing them."

The following was in the Organic Consumers Association's (quite a large and influential non-profit based in the US) email update today:

    "COVID-19
    Knowledge & Power
    Plandemic Indoctornation documentary

"In October 2019—10 weeks before the first COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan, China—the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, the World Economic Forum and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation sponsored “Event 201,” a pandemic preparedness simulation.

From the official “Event 201” website:

“Event 201 simulates an outbreak of a novel zoonotic coronavirus transmitted from bats to pigs to people that eventually becomes efficiently transmissible from person to person, leading to a severe pandemic. The pathogen and the disease it causes are modeled largely on SARS, but it is more transmissible in the community setting by people with mild symptoms.”

This “scripted tabletop exercise” included everything we now see playing out in real time, in the real world, from PPE shortages, lockdowns and removal of civil liberties to mandated vaccination campaigns, riots, economic turmoil and the breakdown of social cohesion.

A new documentary includes highlights from the event. The documentary, “Plandemic Indoctornation” has been banned from most social media platforms.

Before you dismiss this documentary as a “conspiracy theory,” you need to actually watch it. And you need to understand these indisputable, verifiable facts:

    • The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) owns the patent for SARS-CoV (the virus responsible for SARS) isolated from humans. In 2007, the CDC filed a petition with the patent office to keep their coronavirus patent confidential. They also own patents for detection methods, and for a kit to measure the virus

    • By law, one cannot patent naturally-occurring DNA. If SARS-CoV is natural, then the patent is illegal. If the virus is manmade, the patent is legal, but the creation of the virus would be a violation of biological weapons treaties and laws. So, either way, the CDC has engaged in illegal activity

    • Because the CDC owns the patent on SARS-CoV, it controls who has the ability to make inquiries into it. Unless authorized, you cannot look at the virus, you cannot measure it or make tests for it, since they own all those patents. This means the CDC has a major profit motive

    • The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill owns a patent describing methods for producing recombinant (genetically engineered) coronaviruses

Nobody likes to believe there are dark forces at work with the potential to destroy our health, and our society. It’s easier to believe in “goodness and light.”

But ignoring the facts doesn't erase them.

Knowing—and acknowledging—the facts is our only path to empowerment."

Jeremy Corbyn's Brother Piers Fined £10,000 Over Trafalgar Square Anti-Mask Protest

Jeremy Corbyn's Brother Piers Fined £10,000 Over Trafalgar Square Anti-Mask Protest

Jeremy Corbyn’s brother has been fined £10,000 for breaking newly introduced coronavirus laws.

Piers Corbyn was arrested at an anti-lockdown protest in Trafalgar Square on Saturday where he appeared on stage alongside conspiracy theorist David Icke and X-Factor loser Chico in front of a crowd that numbered in the thousands.

Protesters displayed anti-mask and anti-vaccination placards and attendees and speakers described Covid-19, which has killed more than 40,000 in the UK alone, as a “hoax”.

Under new changes to regulations, those attending a gathering of more than 30 people may be committing a criminal offence.

Speaking to HuffPost UK, the 73-year-old climate change denier who set up controversial weather forecasting business Weather Action, confirmed the fine and the arrest.

He added: “There was no justification whatsoever for this fine. The order for my arrest appears to have come from on high, nothing to do with local police. When I asked the police, they said to me it came from on high.”

When asked what he meant by “on high”, Corbyn said: “Well who controls the Metropolitan Police? It was either the Greater London Authority or the government that indicated that me or somebody had to be arrested because they were clearly annoyed that we were getting so much success and publicity through the mainstream [media] such as [Russian state-backed media channel] Russia Today.”

Corbyn also said he would be refusing to pay the fine, saying: “I don’t have £10,000 but what will happen is they will send this fixed penalty notice demanding the money through the post and we then refuse to pay.

“Then they will chase us for the money so we’ll have a court case or we appeal it and refuse to pay.”

More than a thousand protesters are thought to have assembled in central London, describing the virus as a “hoax” and demanding restrictions are brought to an end.

Corbyn told HuffPost UK: “There is no justification in any terms for any of the anti-Covid measures. They are not to control Covid, they are there to control the population.”

Face-coverings were near non-existent at the rally, with banners with slogans such as “masks are muzzles” and “stop 5G” – a reference to baseless links between the technology and coronavirus – on display.

On Saturday, the Metropolitan Police said a 73-year-old man had been arrested in Trafalgar Square at 3.25pm on suspicion of breaking the new Health Protection Regulations 2020.

He was informed on Sunday that a fixed penalty notice would be issued for £10,000 for the offence of holding a gathering of more than 30 people in an outdoor place, according to the force.

He has been released from custody, police added.

Robert: I am a fundamental research scientist who uses his quantitative physics background to analyse biological data and to develop predictive models, mostly for processes at the cellular scale. In this interview I discuss the importance of a broad public debate of the Covid-19 health crisis, which should encompass the various scientific opinions, as well as their implications for our society and economy. Regarding scientific approaches, I would like to see the same rigorous scientific criteria applied as the ones we expect our students to use on a daily basis, in particular the critical assessment of the limitations of the methods and obtained results. For additional clarification, key scientific approaches to virus pandemics include virology (the study of viruses at the microscopic structural level), immunology (the study of our very complex innate and adaptive immune systems protecting us from pathogenic infections), and epidemiology (the mathematical modelling of disease outbreaks such as epidemics and even larger pandemics).

In 1976 when I was a nursing student, nurses would still squirt the bit of air in the end of a syringe out into the environment along with drops of drugs. We already knew that antibiotics were responsible for nurturing drug resistant bacteria. STILL, the habit was entrenched.

And then I worked as an FNP in a clinic in 1988-1990 and despite knowing antibiotics were useless for "colds and flu", people demanded they receive their customary pills so the Docs I worked under gave them out. And in the 2000's when we learned that all the hand sanitizers, antiseptic "this and that" was destroying the good bacteria along with the "pathogens", people STILL felt they were necessary.

People have been systematically trained to destroy the mantle of protective bacteria and create resistant strains of pathogenic bacteria even when health professionals SHOULD have learned form experience over the years.
I was waiting for this news.....

There is no second wave – we're just testing more,’ Oxford coronavirus expert says

    https://uk.news.yahoo.com/coronaviru...135414823.html

    Andy Wells
    Freelance Writer
    Yahoo News UK2 September 2020

The rising number of coronavirus cases in the UK is down to more tests being carried out and does not point to a second wave, an expert on medicine has said.

Medical experts have previously predicted that the UK will see a second wave of the virus in winter, a forecast echoed by World Health Organization (WHO) Europe director Hans Kluge last week.

However, Professor Carl Heneghan of the University of Oxford believes that while a “comprehensive system of national test and trace” has led to an uptick of confirmed COVID-19 cases across the UK, that does not mean the disease is on the rise.

Instead, Heneghan said “new mild cases” are not infectious, and are simply being picked up by sensitive tests, providing positive results.

These virus particles already been dealt with “efficiently” by immune systems of those who have contracted COVID-19, Heneghan said.

He told MailOnline: “There is currently no second wave. What we are seeing is a sharp rise in the number of healthy people who are carrying the virus, but exhibiting no symptoms.

“Almost all of them are young. They are being spotted because – finally – a comprehensive system of national test and trace is in place.”

He added: “The government urgently needs to send out a clear, concise message that the risk from COVID-19 is currently low.”

Heneghan said the fear that people with coronavirus but no symptoms are spreading it to others “is not borne out by the experiences of the past six months”.

Newly released data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that weekly death registrations involving COVID-19 in England and Wales fell to 138 in the week ending 21 August – their lowest level since before lockdown.

However, an increase of cases has seen the government halt its planned easing of local lockdowns in Bolton and Trafford.

But, writing in The Spectator, Heneghan said that in the UK “we appear to have the reality of viral circulation”, which is “probably waning fast”.

He highlighted how deaths in both the UK and Italy – the two European nations worst hit by COVID-19 – remained low and stable, despite weeks of rising cases.

He added that the sensitivity of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for testing meant that the smallest fragments of the virus in a sample are amplified millions of times – providing a positive result even when someone is not infected by the whole virus.

These fragments do not make the whole virus, he wrote, and therefore cannot infect other people.

Heneghan added: “Evidence is mounting that a good proportion of 'new' mild cases and people re-testing positives after quarantine or discharge from hospital are not infectious, but are simply clearing harmless virus particles which their immune system has efficiently dealt with.

Health secretary Matt Hancock has warned that the UK faces a possible second wave of coronavirus in winter. (Getty)

“Those whose immunity is more active are exactly in the age group of observed 'positives' and least likely to end with severe disease.”

On Wednesday health secretary Matt Hancock warned that a rise in infections in healthy people could result in a second wave of coronavirus.

He told MPs in the Commons: “I said in July that a second wave was rolling across Europe and sadly we’re now seeing an exponential rise in the number of cases in France and Spain. And the number of hospitalisations is sadly rising there too.

“We must do everything in our power to protect against a second wave here in the UK.”

At last true experts who are listened to are coming out and getting some media coverage.
Several members have been pointing to the tests being flawed, now this is very clear not loads of information that is not easily understood but this is crystal clear.
The tests are not showing an increase in serious illness or even an increase in other than mild non-infectious "cases"
As has been said by some members increased testing is throwing up increased "cases" not an increase in the virus - not an increase in danger.
We are back to what was said from day one -- this virus is no more deadly than winter flu.
There are other illnesses that kill more.
So the Draconian measures were totally unnecessary.
The Professor is the above video goes as far as he can go but read between the lines.

There have been videos of him posted here on Avalon saying much the same.

    The Fauci Files
    by Dr. Joseph Mercola
    September 01, 2020
    https://articles.mercola.com/sites/a...&rid=954230116

    "STORY AT-A-GLANCE
Dr. Anthony Fauci has served as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) since 1984, but has yet to come out with the “Big One” — a vaccine or infectious disease treatment that will allow him to retire with a victory under his belt
Fauci has flip-flopped on the use of masks, first mocking people for wearing them, and then insisting they should. In mid-July, he suddenly urged governments to “be as forceful as possible” on mask rules
While Fauci still claims there’s only anecdotal evidence supporting the use of hydroxychloroquine, and that the drug doesn’t work for COVID-19, the scientific support for it goes as far back as 2005
In April, Fauci praised the NIAID-sponsored drug Remdesivir, saying it "has a clear-cut and significant positive effect in diminishing the time to recovery." Overall, the improvement rate for the drug was 31%
Research now shows hydroxychloroquine reduced mortality by 50% when given early, and many doctors anecdotally claim survival rates close to 100%. Despite such excellent results, Fauci continues to disparage and cast doubt on hydroxychloroquine
At 79 years old, Dr. Anthony Fauci — who has served as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) since 1984 — has yet to come out with the “Big One” — a vaccine or infectious disease treatment that will allow him to retire with a victory under his belt.

He failed to create a successful vaccine for AIDS, SARS, MERS and Ebola. A COVID-19 vaccine is essentially his last chance to go out in a blaze of glory. As evidenced by his history, he will stop at nothing to protect Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine and Gilead’s antiviral Remdesivir.

He even threw tried and true pandemic protocols out the window when COVID-19 hit, turning into an unquestioning spokesman for draconian liberty-stripping measures instead. To echo a question asked by Dr. Sal Martingano in his article,1 “Dr. Fauci: ‘Expert’ or Co-Conspirator,” why are we not questioning this so-called expert?

Fauci ‘Has Been Wrong About Everything’
The risk we take when listening to Fauci is that, so far, he’s been wrong about most things. In a July 14, 2020, “Opposing View” editorial in USA Today, White House adviser Peter Navarro, director of the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy, stated that Fauci “has been wrong about everything that I have interacted with him on.”2 According to Navarro, Fauci’s errors in judgment include:3

•Opposing the ban on incoming flights from China in late January 2020.

•Telling the American people the novel virus outbreak was nothing to worry about well into February.

•Flip-flopping on the use of masks — first mocking people for wearing them, and then insisting they should. In fact, mid-July, he suddenly urged governments to “be as forceful as possible” on mask rules.4

•Claiming there was only anecdotal evidence supporting the use of hydroxychloroquine, when the scientific grounds for it go as far back as 2005, when the study,5 “Chloroquine Is a Potent Inhibitor of SARS Coronavirus Infection and Spread,” was published in the Virology Journal.

Fauci should have been well aware of this publication. According to that study,6 “Chloroquine has strong antiviral effects on SARS-CoV infection of primate cells. These inhibitory effects are observed when the cells are treated with the drug either before or after exposure to the virus, suggesting both prophylactic and therapeutic advantage,” the study authors said. In other words, the drug worked both for prevention and treatment.

As noted by Navarro, more recent research found hydroxychloroquine reduced the mortality rate among COVID-19 patients by 50% when used early.

Interestingly, in a March 24, 2020, interview7 with Chris Stigall, Fauci did say that — were he to speak strictly as a doctor treating patients — he would certainly prescribe chloroquine to COVID-19 patients, particularly if there were no other options.

Then, in August, he flipped back to insisting hydroxychloroquine doesn’t work,8 even though by that time, there were several studies demonstrating its effectiveness against COVID-19 specifically.

So, it appears Fauci has had a hard time making up his mind on this issue as well, on the one hand dismissing the drug as either untested or ineffective against COVID-19, and on the other admitting it would be wise to use, seeing how the options are so limited.

    Navarro continues:9

“Now Fauci says a falling mortality rate doesn’t matter when it is the single most important statistic to help guide the pace of our economic reopening. The lower the mortality rate, the faster and more we can open. So when you ask me whether I listen to Dr. Fauci’s advice, my answer is: only with skepticism and caution.”Fauci Has Done Nothing to Help Unite the Country
While Fauci claims to be exasperated by how political the pandemic has become,10 Robert F. Kennedy Jr. pointed out in an August 2, 2020, Instagram post11 that Fauci himself is, at least in part, part of the problem, as his double standards on hydroxychloroquine have done much to polarize and divide the nation:

“Fauci insists he will not approve HCQ for COVID until its efficacy is proven in ‘randomized, double blind placebo studies.’ To date, Dr. Fauci has never advocated such studies for any of the 72 vaccine doses added to the mandatory childhood schedule since he took over NIAID in 1984. Nor is he requiring them for the COVID vaccines currently racing for approval.

Why should chloroquine be the only remedy required to cross this high hurdle? HCQ is less in need of randomized placebo studies than any of these vaccines since its safety is well established after 60 years of use and decades on WHO’s listed of ‘essential medicines.’

Fauci’s peculiar hostility towards HCQ is consistent with his half century bias favoring vaccines and patent medicines. Dr. Fauci’s double standards create confusion, mistrust and polarization.”

In a June 10, 2020, article,12 Global Research also questioned Fauci’s many attempts to disparage the drug for no apparently valid reason; even promoting the fake (and ultimately retracted) Lancet study that claimed to show hydroxychloroquine was dangerous. At the end of the day, who benefits? Well, certainly it benefits the drug and vaccine industries, which seems to be where Fauci’s loyalties lie.

Fauci’s Bias Is Hard to Miss
While Fauci is not named on the patents of either Moderna’s vaccine or Remdesivir, the NIH does have a 50% stake in Moderna’s vaccine,13 and the recognition that would come with a successful vaccine launch would certainly include Fauci.

He also has lots to lose — if nothing else, his pride — if Remdesivir doesn’t become a blockbuster, as his NIAID is sponsoring the clinical trials.14 The NIAID also supported the original research into Remdesivir, when it was aimed at treating Ebola.15

His bias here is clear for anyone to see. April 29, 2020, he stated16 Remdesivir "has a clear-cut and significant positive effect in diminishing the time to recovery." How good is that? Patients on the drug recovered in 11 days, on average, compared to 15 days among those receiving a placebo. Overall, the improvement rate for the drug was 31%.

Meanwhile, research17 now shows hydroxychloroquine reduced mortality by 50% when given early, and many doctors anecdotally claim survival rates close to 100%. This still isn’t good enough for Fauci, who continues insisting hydroxychloroquine is a bust.18

His stance on these two drugs certainly doesn’t make sense based on the data alone. But it does make sense if he wants (or has been instructed) to protect the profits of Remdesivir.

As director of NIAID, which has been part of Remdesivir’s development from the start, why wouldn’t he want to see it become a moneymaker for the agency he dedicated his career to? It also makes sense when you consider his primary job is to raise funds for biodefense research, primarily vaccines but also diagnostics and drug therapies.19,20

Fauci Doubts Safety of Russian Vaccine
Early in August 2020, Russia announced they would begin vaccinating citizens with its own COVID-19 vaccine, despite not finishing large-scale human trials.21 The announcement drew skepticism from American infectious disease specialists, including Fauci, who said he has “serious doubts” that Russia’s COVID-19 vaccine is actually safe and effective.22

Fauci conveniently ignores the many failed attempts to create other coronavirus vaccines over the past two decades, including vaccines against SARS and MERS.
He’s probably right on that point. It’s hard to imagine you can prove safety and effectiveness in a mere two months of trials. But the fast-tracked vaccine efforts of the U.S. and EU are hardly bound to be significantly better, considering the many shortcuts that are being taken.

Fauci Ignores Two Decades of Failed Coronavirus Vaccines
Despite being in a position to know better, Fauci conveniently ignores the many failed attempts to create other coronavirus vaccines over the past two decades, including vaccines against SARS and MERS. A paper23 by Eriko Padron-Regalado, “Vaccines for SARS-CoV-2: Lessons From Other Coronavirus Strains” reviews some of these past experiences. As noted in the Conservative Review:24

“Since their emergence in 2003 and 2012 respectively, no safe and efficacious human vaccines for either SARS-Cov1 or MERS have been developed.

Moreover, experimental non-human (animal model) evaluations of four SARS-Cov1 candidate vaccine types, revealed that despite conferring some protection against infection with SARS-Cov1, each also caused serious lung injury, caused by an overreaction of the immune system, upon viral challenge.25

Identical ‘hypersensitive-type’ lung injury occurred26 when mice were administered a candidate MERS-Cov vaccine, then challenged with infectious virus, negating the ostensible benefit achieved by their development of promising … ‘antibodies’ … which might have provided immunity to MERS-Cov.

These disappointing experimental observations must serve as a cautionary tale for SARS-Cov2 vaccination programs to control epidemic COVID-19 disease.”

When recently asked for a rebuttal to criticism of his leadership during the pandemic, Fauci replied, “I think you can trust me,” citing his long record of service in government medicine. However, that long service record is fraught with ethics and safety lapses.

For example, in 2005, NPR reported27 the NIH tested novel AIDS drugs on hundreds of HIV-positive children in state foster care during the late 1980s and90s without assigning patient advocates to monitor the children’s health, as is required by law in most states.

Fauci was appointed director of the NIAID in 1984. The AIDS research was part of his research portfolio, and the AIDS research division reported directly to him, so these violations occurred on his watch.28 In 2008, two NIH biomedical ethicists published a paper on the controversial practice of using wards of the state as guinea pigs, noting:29

"Enrolling wards of the state in research raises two major concerns: the possibility that an unfair share of the burdens of research might fall on wards, and the need to ensure interests of individual wards are accounted for ... Having special protections only for some categories is misguided. Furthermore, some of the existing protections ought to be strengthened."

Under Fauci, the NIAID became the largest funder of HIV/AIDS in the world.30 Despite that, numerous articles over the years have discussed how AIDS activists have been less than satisfied with Fauci and the NIAID.31,32,33 A 1986 article stated:34

“If Fauci were less intent on amassing power within the federal health bureaucracy … he would have left AIDS treatment research with the NCI, where it began, relying on that institute's proven expertise in organizing large, multisite clinical trials for cancer therapies."

A July 23, 2020, article in Just the News lists several other safety and ethics problems that Fauci has been involved in through the years, including conflict of interest violations in vaccine research.35

Just the News also interviewed NIAID chief of ethics and regulatory compliance Dr. Jonathan Fishbein, whom the NIAID was forced to reinstate in 2005 after it was determined that Fishbein had been wrongly fired in retaliation for raising concerns about lack of safety in some of the agency’s research:36

“Fishbein said … Fauci failed to take responsibility for the managers and researchers working below him when signs of trouble emerged, allowing problems to persist until others intervened. ‘Fauci is all about Fauci,’ Fishbein said. ‘He loves being the headline. It’s his ego.’”

    Fauci’s Connections to Wuhan Lab
By now, you probably also know that the NIAID funded gain-of-function research on coronaviruses at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. As reported by Newsweek:37

“In 2019, with the backing of NIAID, the National Institutes of Health committed $3.7 million over six years for research that included some gain-of-function work. The program followed another $3.7 million, 5-year project for collecting and studying bat coronaviruses, which ended in 2019, bringing the total to $7.4 million.”

This money was not given directly, but rather funneled to the Wuhan lab via the EcoHealth Alliance. According to a recent report by The Wall Street Journal,38 the NIH is now insisting EcoHealth Alliance submit all information and materials from the Wuhan lab before it’s allowed to resume funding.

Fauci is a longtime proponent of dangerous gain-of-function research. In 2003, he wrote an article39 published in the journal Nature on how “the world needs new and creative ways to counter bioterrorism.”

“We will pursue innovative approaches for modulating innate immunity to induce and enhance protection against many biological pathogens, as well as simple and rapid molecularly based diagnostics to detect, characterize and quantify infectious threats,” Fauci wrote.

“These are lofty goals that may take many years to accomplish — but we must aspire to them. Third, we must enormously strengthen our interactions with the private sector, including biotechnology companies and large pharmaceutical corporations.

Many biodefence-related products that we are pursuing do not provide sufficient incentives for industry — the potential profit margin for companies is tenuous, and there is no guarantee that products would be used.

Therefore, we will seek non-traditional collaborations with industry, for example guaranteeing that products will be purchased if companies sign up … so that we can quickly make available effective vaccines and treatments …”

With that, there can be little question about which team Fauci is on. He’s on the side of drug and vaccine makers, and has been for decades. There’s no money to be made by either the agency or its private collaborators from natural products such as vitamin D, vitamin C, quercetin or its drug equivalent, hydroxychloroquine. All of these are dirt-cheap and off patent.

    Prediction Track Record = Null
Fauci’s predictions for COVID-19 mortality have also turned out to be as inaccurate as all of his previous predictions. In 1987, he predicted heterosexual infection of HIV/AIDS would rise to 10% by 1991. It never rose above 4%.

He predicted the bird flu would result in 2 million to 7 million deaths. In the end, the avian H5N1 flu killed 440 worldwide. He sought billions of dollars to combat the threat of Zika, a virus that fizzled without making much of an impact anywhere.40

When you look at his track record, you realize he’s predicted “nightmare” scenarios for decades, none of which have materialized. Last but not least, Dr. Fauci serves on Bill Gates leadership council."

For those among us who still want or need to travel.
I have been cancelling air flights because I do not want to end up in a situation where I am asked to undergo a swab-test. Trust is zero because one does not know what these swabs have been drenched in.
Now I read there is a new and fast saliva test in the making. Where I do not believe all this testing is accurate or truthful, I would not mind spitting some saliva if asked. Any thoughts about this new development ?

This was written in the following newsfeed:
In other developments, major trials of a no-swab saliva test and a rapid 20-minute test are set to be rolled out across the country, with Health Secretary Matt Hancock hailing the “fast, accurate and innovative new tests” as key to helping Britain “get back to a more normal way of life.

A description about this type of test can be found hereunder. The pilot project should be finished by now but it is not clear if these tests are used yet at any borders .

Added note. I am being naively optimistic about travelling. Just received a message that Spain is going to close the borders again. And in a nearby town the rest houses of old people are in lockdown again after an outbreak of sickness. Note that there was a thermic shock after temperature dropped 10 degrees Celsius following a day of rain before the weekend. But no, the covid is the culprit and a common cold does not exist any longer. The hysteria is ready to start all over.

    Agreed Philippe.
    Forget any testing any virus.
They give they take away again.
Businesses told they can reopen, hairdresser, customers in the shop then mid-morning no that's cancelled, you have to close. Yes you can go on holiday then --you will be quarantined on your return.
What employer can cope with that-- staff go on holiday then they have to self isolate.

This in spite of so much protest and valid information.
You do not close the world down for a virus that has only mild symptoms for most
There is no way this can be justified.

What do they do then if a person keeps on testing positif. They exterminate them ?
I just found a newsreel of a mega drive-trough where hundreds of cars are cuing up to get their swap-test ' In the city of Pau in the Pyrenees. The interviewed man of the laboratory company explains the advantages and how this will last till end of 2021. Good business, Expect test-stations everywhere.
