Michael Leunig, that is a nice positive sounding name; I know I am biased because I am also named Michael. When I was a boy, my good friend Martin Green's mum used to call me 'Michael the Archangel ', she was Irish and rather beautiful, I liked her saying this!
This is one of my old favourite Leunig cartoons, he is an unusual man, and he is never frightened to speak his heart, which is very unfashionable in these times:

I love the 'Method' about the Peasant becoming disillusioned, and sobbing pitifully.

Leunig. Sometimes amongst all that softness and curves there is a blade.

Leunig's been sacked from his cover slot on The Age:

    https://www.news.com.au/finance/busi...58cb21827df0d4

Quote He told The Australian that The Age’s editor Gay Alcorn called him soon after she banned the cartoon to “break the news gently” that he was no longer wanted on the editorial page.

He said he was told he was “out of touch with the readership”.

“Gay feels this type of cartoon is not in line with public sentiment, and The Age’s readership, who it does seem are largely in favour of the Andrews Covid narrative,” he said. “But my job is to challenge the status quo, and that has always been the job of the cartoonist.”
This was the cartoon that drew the ire:

I believe it is The Age that is out of touch, that was a disgraceful act on their part, it played out like one of the man's more ironic cartoons, you can picture it a room with a panel of morally correct types, looking smug and disapprovingly on Mike Leunig. This is a sad, deeply wrong action.

Of course it is. In medieval times, the Court Jester was always the one who gave wise advice to the King — and was able to because they'd never get executed for their quirkiness, which was an integral part of their customary role.

Comedians, in every culture other than totalitarian ones, have always been the untouchables who get to point things out that others can't say.

We should defend our way of life
to an extent that any attempt on it is crushed,

    so that any adversary
will never make such an attempt in the future.

So astutely observed Bill. We need those untouchable ones more than ever these days of course. Rogan pointed out that Will Smith's 'attack' (my inverted commas, to me it was an attack) on Chris Rock was a similar type of betrayal. These ones, these commentators, yep, they're precious. Of course that makes the angry herd salivate for their blood even more in its fury.
