    Are China's empty cities inside that flood zone or well away from it ?

    Every time I look at this thread I immediately think about those empty cities. I don't believe this amount of freak weather and flooding happened naturally. I still can't join the dots tho'.

    The Three Gorges Dam predicament is gradually hitting the mainstream. Here's a Forbes article from yesterday: (20 July, 2020)
    ~~~
    China Floods call into question sustainability of massive Three Gorges Dam
    Seems to be part of the times, no? A once in a generation pandemic, a once in a generation flood. Parts of China are literally up to their eyeballs in water, in what the Chinese government is calling a once in 100 years flood. The Three Gorges Dam, built to stop these things, is now in the spotlight.
    The Three Gorges Dam is the world’s largest hydroelectric power station, with an installed capacity of 22,500 megawatts of power generation. The thing is, that the power station is down the Yangtze River from a handful of other dams that exist at a higher elevation than the Three Gorges. And because of the floods and problems at those dams upstream, Three Gorges is buckling under the strain of massive flows of water.
    Cities in the country's central region along the Yangtze River — China's longest river — have been flooded in the past week due to heavy rains this monsoon season. It was reported to be the worst flood since 1998, and not 100 years as some in Beijing have said.
    All told, more than 400 Yangtze tributary rivers have overflowed, with nearly 200 people dead and properties underwater.
    Average rainfall is around 12% higher than last monsoon season. The economic damage from flooding is expected to reach 86.2 billion yuan ($12 billion), according to some government estimates made on Friday.
    On Sunday, the AP reported from Beijing that authorities blasted down an entire dam in order to release surging waters behind it and let it run.
    State broadcaster CCTV reported the dam on the Chuhe River in Anhui province was blown to bits with explosives early Sunday morning, after which the water level was expected to drop by two feet.
    Last week, the Three Gorges Dam opened three floodgates as the water level behind it rose more than 50 feet above the flood zone. Another flood crest is expected to arrive at the dam on Tuesday, the AP article states, adding that China’s military has been testing the strength of embankments and shoring them up with sandbags and rocks.
    Over the weekend, firefighters finished filling in a 620-foot break on Poyang Lake, China’s largest freshwater lake, that caused flooding into 15 villages, sinking grain crops in Jiangxi province under water.
    As of late Sunday, the Huaihe River was overflowing as heavy rain is forecast in the region for the next three days, according to China’s Ministry of Emergency Management.
    From today to Wednesday, more strong rains will raise flood risks for rivers connecting to Three Gorges, though it seems that the heaviest rains will end by mid-week, saving the world’s largest dam from further stress.
    Floods are expected to pose a threat to parts of Shanxi, Henan, Shandong, Anhui and Jiangsu provinces this week, while heavy mountain rains will likely hit parts of Sichuan and Guizhou provinces, according to the AP, though this shouldn’t have any impact on the strength of Three Gorges.
    The last thing China needs is for that dam to fail. Papering that over would be a bitter pill to swallow for Beijing.
    When the dams blew here in Michigan 2 months ago, they called that a 500 year flood, we received 7 inches of rain in 36 hours. Once the first one blew it was toast for the rest downstream, this happened about 35 miles from where I live. Now that 1/3 of a mile river is back to its original 100 ft wide river, all the trees from 100 years ago are still sticking up by the old riverbank . Its pretty surreal.
    U.S. Order To Close Chinese Consulate And More Is Coming
    "A fire was spotted at the Chinese Consulate in Houston, Texas U.S. at midnight on July 21. The smoke and burning ashes alerted nearby residents and firefighters were called to the site.
    The video, posted on Twitter, shows several people burning documents in metal buckets at an open-air courtyard in the center of the Chinese Consulate. Firefighters responded to nearby residents’ calls but were barred entry
    On July 22, State Department spokesman Morgan Ortagus confirmed the U.S. order to close the Chinese Consulate in Houston on the 24th, in order to "protect U.S. intellectual property rights and the private information of U.S. citizens. And the Chinese officials were given 72 hours to leave America.
    Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin refuted the allegations and called the U.S. "unilateral political provocation and deliberate disruption of China-U.S. relations".
    U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is visiting Europe, did not give details, but he again accused the Chinese of stealing the U.S. and European intellectual property. He said, “We are sending out clear expectations for how the Chinese Communist Party is going to behave and when they don’t, we’re going to take actions that protect the American people, protect our national security and also our economy and jobs."
    In fact, the prosecution of Chinese espionage in the U.S. continues to increase. On the 21st the U.S. Justice Department indicted two Chinese men for stealing confidential data from companies in Maryland, Massachusetts, and California that are developing new coronavirus vaccines, pharmaceuticals and testing technology, as well as collecting information on overseas human right activists and the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. The indictment states that they were hired by China's Ministry of State Security, and have been attacking computer equipment in countries around the world for more than a decade, stealing trade secrets, weapons designs, military systems, and other information, resulting in the "theft of trade secrets, weapons designs, military systems, and other information, causing "hundreds of millions of dollars" in losses, the indictment stated.
    US National National Counterintelligence and Security Center Director said earlier this year that China's stealing of trade secrets had cost America about $300 billion to $600 billion a year.
    China also conducted a mass amount of national-level hacking attacks. In 2019, several U.S. aerospace companies were attacked by a Chinese-developed malware called Sakula and stole confidential technology to build aircraft. The C919 jet, which China is building to compete with Boeing and Airbus and claimed “self-developed”, was found to have components identical to those made by CFM International, Honeywell, Parker Aerospace, GE and other U.S. companies.
    In a speech at the Hudson Institute in Washington, D.C. on July 7, FBI Director Christopher Wray detailed the Chinese Communist Party's numerous sabotage campaigns against the United States. He said that of the nearly 5,000 counterintelligence cases currently underway in the United States, nearly half are related to China, and the FBI opens a new China counterintelligence case every 10 hours. Wray also highlighted China's Fox Hunt Campaign, which threatens Chinese nationals living abroad with sensitive information, demanding them to return to China or even kill themselves.
    The Chinese Communist Party's claws also extend to Europe, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, and many other countries. The latest report from Germany's Federal Office for Constitutional Protection mentioned that Germany has been the target of Chinese spy operations, not just only using every means possible to influence government decisions in areas such as trade, 5G, and other technology-related fields, but also using LinkedIn to search and hire potential candidates to become spies. China even collects data for its social credit system in Germany, including Chinese nationals living in Germany, as well as German citizens who use online services, apps, or payment services from China, such as Alibaba, Tencent, WeChat, and shared-bikes systems."
    The alarming, deafening silence in the western media about what happens in China is also an interesting puzzle.
    Why is Everything in CHINA FALLING APART?
    "Before you come to China, you might have an idea that it will be ancient tea houses, tight alley ways full of culture and history, or people living the same way they did hundereds of years ago.
    You'd be wrong.
    China is changing, and sometimes too fast. So Winston and I delve into something that we find a little disappointing sometimes, and that is the lack of maintanence in China.
    If you go to most old areas, you can almost see the history pouring out from the ancient buildings and temples, but they are almost never maintained. This problem is to the point where we are having a difficult time finding anything that is more than 50 years old, simply because it is all collapsed.
    This isn't limited to old things either. Chinese people have had an issue with maintenance with most things for a long time.
    Hop on and find out more!
    Living in China for so long, we would like to share some of the comparisons that we have found between China and the west, and shed some light on the situation."
    (Too bad the people who are newly homeless from flooding in China will not be relocated to all those empty buildings, but no doubt that will never happen as there would probably be no profit in it. Unless the whole economy undergoes a renovation from top to bottom, and people are no longer considered to be disposable. )
    GHOST CITY - Inside the Chinese Housing Bubble
    "Speculative buyers have eschewed Chinese stocks in favor of property, prompting even the chief economist at the central bank of the world's second largest economy to declare that housing was in a "bubble."
    But when strategists at UBS AG recently compiled a list of bubblicious housing markets, there weren't any selections from mainland China due to the lack of reliable data on the subject, underscoring the continued difficulty in declaring Chinese real estate to be in overheated territory.
    But Deutsche Bank AG Chief China Economist Zhiwei Zhang thinks he's pinpointed "a clear sign of a bubble" in the market — one that will end in a major correction in two years' time.
    After analyzing how much developers were willing to spend to win land auctions in 10 major Chinese cities in which values are already up 23 percent year-over-year, the economist found that the business case for these bids evaporates unless property prices continue to increase.
    Hop on and find out!
    Living in China for so long, we would like to share some of the comparisons that we have found between China and the west, and shed some light on the situation."
    They want to terminate 20 million of their own population. So, this dam situation might be part of that....
    But they'd not want to wipe out Wuhan, one of China's key manufacturing hubs.
    I believe you are right. That is why they are purposely breaking some dams to allow water from the Yangtze/others to flood populated river basins (that was there originally to control flood naturally) the save Wuhan and Shanghai.
    The 3G dam has been slowing down the flow of the Yangtze which causes silt build-up on the river bottom downstream. The river embankments need to grow higher and higher to accommodate the riverbed rises. They either ignore to remove build up silt or possibly it is too costly to do.
    Over the years, the river will rise higher and higher than the river basins. The flooded will be more and more devastated. The 3G dam is becoming a nightmare for them.
