"Previously in our exclusive interview with top water expert Mr. Wang Weiluo, we talked about the cracks appearing on the Three Gorges Dam that could lead to earthquakes in the residential areas in the reservoir region. How is this different from the dam deforming? What would happen if numerous consecutive natural disasters were to hit the dam? And how capable is the dam of preventing floods? In this episode of Zooming In, Mr. Wang Weiluo explains how exactly the flooding was caused by excessive construction of reservoirs and dams. "

I've been following this pretty closely, and in spite of all the (justifiable!) calls to alarm, the dam seems to be holding! I hope that's a good sign, that even with all the tremendous amount of rain and flooding, maybe it will continue to hold.

Maybe, but if you watch the video about cavitation, you will see that a lot of damage to a dam can be hidden until the water levels go way down.

"This is China's most spectacular extravaganza. A hundred years in the making, costing $25 billion, one of the biggest engineering feats the world has ever seen. And, according to its critics, an environmental disaster on a monumental scale. The Three Gorges Dam is certainly a sight to behold, a massive wall of concrete spanning the mighty Yangtze River. The Chinese say it's all about flood control and clean hydro electric power. The environmentalists say true, it is about power. Power and national pride and the arrogance of man trying to tame forces of nature."

( I think this is actually from 2008, though on the youtube page, it's dated 9/8/2020 Still, some good background info and great scenery. )

Yes, many thanks. This video is very telling. The Gorillas Forex Community channel is by far the best of the China commentators and interpreters on YouTube.

I couldn't quite believe the price of the watermelon (119 Yuan) at 4:26, so I double-checked it... that's $17.50. Go figure. That's one tiny data point that points to huge trouble, very likely for us in the 'west' as well.

China has recently tried to mix it with India in a border standoff and made a big fool of itself in the process:

It would appear the PLA troops were no match for the merciless Himalayan climate and the Indians have preemptively occupied all the important heights overlooking Chinese positions.

It seems the CCP uses it media mouthpiece, the Global Times to resort to spreading propaganda how the PLA are better suited and prepared for the imminent winter. This September is crucial, in that positions need to be established before the onset of winter.

The PLA have two options: to de-escalate, or fight a winter war which they are woefully unprepared for. Various wags in the comments section have noted that wherever the PLA has set up camps in Ladudkh region, they have also setup oxygen tanks and supply pipelines, meaning that they are struggling to breathe at those heights.

Fascinating, thanks. I've been to Ladakh (quite high, too), but not in winter, where it's mercilessly cold. I'd back the Indians every time. The Chinese morale will be low, and the Indians are proudly defending their own national border. Besides all that, the Indians know everything there is to know about high-altitude mountaineering. So the Chinese posturing really is amusing to see.

Now that China is struggling financially, even struggling to even feed its own population (China literally would not exist were it not for US soybean production), the CCP is doing what communists always do - revert to stealing private property:

    Even nationalising many ancestral properties:

Major powers in the world no longer wish to forge strong trading ties with China, such is their distrust.

Mike Pompeo, Secretary of State, going on to state (in my humble opinion one of his most important speeches)
    "

Quote Look, we have to admit a hard truth. We must admit a hard truth that should guide us in the years and decades to come, that if we want to have a free 21st century, and not the Chinese century of which Xi Jinping dreams, the old paradigm of blind engagement with China simply won’t get it done. We must not continue it and we must not return to it.

As President Trump has made very clear, we need a strategy that protects the American economy, and indeed our way of life. The free world must triumph over this new tyranny.

Now, before I seem too eager to tear down President Nixon’s legacy, I want to be clear that he did what he believed was best for the American people at the time, and he may well have been right.

He was a brilliant student of China, a fierce cold warrior, and a tremendous admirer of the Chinese people, just as I think we all are.

He deserves enormous credit for realizing that China was too important to be ignored, even when the nation was weakened because of its own self-inflicted communist brutality.

In 1967, in a very famous Foreign Affairs article, Nixon explained his future strategy. Here’s what he said:

He said, “Taking the long view, we simply cannot afford to leave China forever outside of the family of nations…The world cannot be safe until China changes. Thus, our aim – to the extent we can, we must influence events. Our goal should be to induce change.”

And I think that’s the key phrase from the entire article: “to induce change.”

So, with that historic trip to Beijing, President Nixon kicked off our engagement strategy. He nobly sought a freer and safer world, and he hoped that the Chinese Communist Party would return that commitment.

As time went on, American policymakers increasingly presumed that as China became more prosperous, it would open up, it would become freer at home, and indeed present less of a threat abroad, it’d be friendlier. It all seemed, I am sure, so inevitable.

But that age of inevitability is over. The kind of engagement we have been pursuing has not brought the kind of change inside of China that President Nixon had hoped to induce.

The truth is that our policies – and those of other free nations – resurrected China’s failing economy, only to see Beijing bite the international hands that were feeding it.

We opened our arms to Chinese citizens, only to see the Chinese Communist Party exploit our free and open society. China sent propagandists into our press conferences, our research centers, our high-schools, our colleges, and even into our PTA meetings.

We marginalized our friends in Taiwan, which later blossomed into a vigorous democracy.

We gave the Chinese Communist Party and the regime itself special economic treatment, only to see the CCP insist on silence over its human rights abuses as the price of admission for Western companies entering China.
That was just a portion of Pompeos oratory, the full text can be found here:

Carter Laren and Keri Smith are from the excellent YouTube channel Unsafe Space. They're smart, articulate, funny, and well-informed. Keri Smith is the former Social Justice Warrior, the heroine of this thread:
They do a bunch of interviews with equally smart people. Here's their 36-minute conversation with Jack Posobiec, who knows a thing or two about China.

Posobiec covers a great deal of important Chinese ground very quickly, but specially interesting to me was his most excellent and detailed summary of the repression of the Uighurs, from 8:05—15:24.

China declares a war-time state as the virus continues to spread. It seems that the virus in China never really ended.

The excellent Joshua Philipp also analyses speculation on whether China has played any part in the violent unrest that has swept across the United States.

In particular the footage of BLM protesters going inside premises and harassing diners, very similar to what also happened during the cultural revolution (destruction) in China during that time. There are direct links between these.

"GFC TV" is from the same guy who created "Gorillas Forex Community" ( with the strong Manchester accent), who just recently returned from a break, and hopefully will be posting more now, as his posts about the 3GD are excellent.
He says here he's going to better organize his posts, and more will be coming about China, the Yangtze and the dam.
...And that he thinks the flood waters are so polluted they are causing damage to the dam and will not be going anywhere because of overall faulty management of the rivers in China.

"Heavy rainfall continues in parts of China, and on September 22 water levels on the Songhua River in Harbin rose to its warning level. New flood alerts were issued by the Ministry of Water Resources, which warned of coming floods on the Jinsha River in Yunnan, Yuanjiang River, Duliu River in Guizhou, Hongshui River and Youjiang River in Guangxi. It also noted that some small and medium sized rivers in China are expected to have a “super-alarm level of floods.”

President Donald Trump harshly criticized the CCP at the 75th United Nations General Assembly. Trump stated that 75 years after the end of World War II, “we are once again engaged in a great global struggle. We have waged a fierce battle against the invisible enemy — the China virus — which has claimed countless lives in 188 countries.” He said, “As we pursue this bright future, we must hold accountable the nation which unleashed this plague onto the world: China.”

Trump noted that in the early days of the virus outbreak, “China locked down travel domestically while allowing flights to leave China and infect the world.” He noted that as this happened, “China condemned my travel ban on their country, even as they cancelled domestic flights and locked citizens in their homes.”

He noted other issues with the CCP, including its pollution and overfishing of the oceans, its carbon emissions which are close to twice that of the United States, and other problems. Trump stated, “Those who attack America’s exceptional environmental record while ignoring China’s rampant pollution are not interested in the environment. They only want to punish America, and I will not stand for it.”

This story and more in this episode of Crossroads."

Level 4 Emergency Issued Over China Bubonic Plague Outbreak; A Mom Sues Wuhan Over Daughter's Death

"Chinese leaders are moving forward with a new campaign to take over private industry, under the guise of a “mixed-ownership” government program. And recent developments within the Party suggest there’s a divide in the leadership. State media reported that on September 17, the State Council announced that China is ready to give its “continued, unswerving support” to reform and develop state-owned and private businesses. State media also said “greater efforts will be made in deepening mixed-ownership reform, strengthening the modern corporate structure and developing sound market-oriented operating mechanisms.”

Meanwhile, it appears that the actor Jackie Chan will get to keep his $17.6 mansion, after the auction was suddenly withdrawn the day before its planned foreclosure on September 28. Yahoo News cited people familiar with the case, and reported that the auction was withdrawn from the court due to an alleged “objection from an outsider influence.” Details are still thin.

And there are now reports that two types of bubonic plague have been found in Northern and Southern China. After original reports of a case in Inner Mongolia, a new case was confirmed on the evening of September 27 in Yunnan. The local government launched a level four emergency response to prevent the spread of the plague soon after it was confirmed. It was allegedly found after authorities conducted screenings for the disease across the whole county, after three rats were found dead in a village."

I'm trying to stay reasonably abreast of the tensions in the Ladakh region that borders both India and China. As reported on this thread before this is an ongoing situation with huge ramifications if it gets out of hand. We'll see, and of course hope that it doesn't escalate.

India Reportedly Test-Fires Nuclear Missile With 800km Range Amid Border Tension With China

    11:14 GMT 03.10.2020

India has conducted a slew of missile tests recently. Successful tests of laser-guided anti-tank missiles and Brahmos supersonic cruise missiles have also been conducted recently.

India successfully test-fired a new version of a surface-to-surface nuclear-capable ballistic missile on Saturday, according to media reports. The Shourya surface-to-surface missile can hit a target at a range of 800 kilometres, media reports add.

News Agency ANI on Saturday cited sources as saying, "India today successfully test-fired a new version of Shourya surface-to-surface nuclear-capable ballistic missile which can hit targets at around 800 km range."

""The Missile will complement the existing class of missile systems and will be lighter and easier to operate," the agency continued, quoting sources.

India's missile testing comes as tensions are growing between it and China over border disputes at the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh sector.

Only two days ago, India successfully tested a laser-guided, anti-tank missile with a range of more than four kilometres. The missile, developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), was fired from the third-generation Arjun main battle tank and hit targets with full accuracy.

Last month, DRDO successfully test-fired the Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle (HSTDV). India is now the fourth country after US, China and Russia to have developed this technology.

"This video discusses some facts about the three gorges dam."

He took a break recently, but he is back now. This one is brief, but it sounds like there will be more coming soon.)

" This interview and many others will be part of a documentary that will be released on YouTube on Oct. 18th. where we expose the CCP’s meddling in our election, their big data and AI ambition and how it endangers the foundation of our democracy.

At the heart of the TikTok and Oracle deal, is whether TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance should remain the main stakeholder of the app. The Chinese Communist Party has been collecting private information of high profile celebrities, royalties and politicians in the UK and Australia. What do they need this data for? At a time when the Chinese regime is becoming more aggressive in big data and artificial intelligence, my interview with Robert Spalding, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute. We discussed what it takes to protect American citizens and their data privacy. And why is Communist China against the rudimental premise of our democracy?"
