    Default Beirut: Many dead after huge explosion in Lebanese capital

    At least 10 people have been killed in a huge explosion in the Lebanese capital Beirut, officials have said.

    The country's health minister Hamad Hasan said there are a "high number of injuries", according to local news station LBC.

    It reported the Hotel Dieu hospital is treating more than 500 people but cannot take any more and is appealing for blood.

    The fireworks factory situated at the port in Beirut exploded, it has caused massive damage to buildings far and wide.

    There's a running updates page here at the London Guardian.
    Early reports suggested it was a fireworks factory, but it's now starting to appear it may have been a huge amount of ammonium nitrate in storage at the port.

    An analysis published an hour ago:

    ~~~
    Amid highly conflicting and vague initial explanations over the cause of the Beirut explosion, a few things stand out. Most of the video footage that has been posted on social media, appears to begin with the aftermath of the first of the two explosions.
    A tall building is visible in the port area and next to it a fiercely burning fire is occasionally visible through the smoke. Also clear in many of the videos are a series of white flashes just below the main cloud of dark smoke.
    One explanation that was quickly given was that these are detonating fireworks from a stored cache being set off by the fire.
    Another potential explanation is that this could be ammunition that is being set off and is burning as you would expect to see when ammunition is hit or is being destroyed.
    The secondary explosion is more puzzling still. An early explanation was that it involved warehoused nitrates exploding, or other stored “highly explosive material” as claimed by Lebanon’s internal security chief without being more explicit.
    One of the most common nitrates in industrial use is ammonium nitrate, used in fertilisers. It is not ordinarily so explosive in its own right.
    When it has been used in homemade explosives, by the IRA and Norwegian far right terrorist Anders Breivik among others, it has been mixed with other materials and is often detonated with a small amount of a more conventional explosive.
    And slowed down frame by frame, the video on social media shows a second, highly symmetrical blast taking place at ground level all at once, throwing up a wall of dust and then a cloud into the air and tremendous speed. It suggests the release of a huge amount of energy which in turn creates a devastating pressure wave that carries debris over a least a kilometre.
    None of which is to say that this is not a terrible accident involving a freak coincidence of circumstances. The 1947 Galveston fire in Texas involved a ship carrying nitrates and a fire that released other materials into a deadly explosive mix that killed over 500 people.
    In this tweeted video (and it's good it was tweeted, it means who took it survived!) you can see what does appear to be fireworks going off at the base of the smoke column. So that part of the story stands up. The explosion that follows it is truly shocking though.
    What is Known So Far About the Devastating Blast in Beirut?
    An explosion ripped through the Lebanese capital Beirut earlier today, causing significant damage. Windows in buildings located several kilometres away from the epicentre of the blast were knocked out. It remains unclear how many people were injured in the incident, as many remain trapped under rubble.
    Lebanon's Prime Minister Hassan Diab has declared 5 August a day of national mourning after a huge blast tore through the capital Beirut, killing at least 70 people. Here is what is known so far about the incident.
    • The blast occurred near the centre of the city, by a port in an area where a mainly Christian population resides.
    • Lebanon's internal security chief Abbas Ibrahim said that the explosion occurred in a section of the port that housed highly explosive materials. Other reports say the blast could have been caused by sodium nitrate that was confiscated from a ship last year and was being stored in a warehouse.
    • Internet in Beirut is working sporadically. There is no electricity in several districts in the city and the telephone service is disrupted.
    • The office of Lebanon's electricity supplier in the capital was completely destroyed in the explosion.
    • More than 30 brigades from the Red Cross are currently working at the scene as rescue workers pull people out from the rubble. Lebanon's health minister has called on hospitals to mobilise and save the lives of the hundreds of people that were injured in the blast.
    • Local media reports say the country's President Michel Aoun will convene a meeting of Lebanon's Supreme Defence Council at his official residence.
    • According to media reports, the wife and daughter of Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab were injured in the explosion.
    • Initial reports say the incident was not a terrorist act. The head of Lebanon's General Security Directorate has denied allegations that the blast could have occurred due to an explosion of pyrotechnics in the port of Beirut.
    • Israel has denied involvement in the incident, while a Hezbollah source told local media that the explosion was not the result of a missile attack on a purported weapons cache in the port where the explosion’s epicentre is located.
    • The secretary-general of Lebanon’s Kataeb political party was critically injured during the explosion and died shortly after, the Al Arabiya TV channel reported.
    They're saying an old stockpile of ammonium nitrate caused the explosion. Which makes a lot more sense than a tactical nuke that some social media numpties are claiming. For a start, even a small tactical nuke would level everything within at least half a mile of ground zero. We'd also never get to see any of these youtube and twitter clips at all. If an EMP didn't fry every phone instantly, the people who shot the footage would never get to upload it. They'd be dead from radiation burns.
    Unfortunately a far wider area than just the docklands were destroyed. I do wonder what the death toll is, I guarantee it's more than 10.
    There reporting 50 dead now.
    https://halturnerradioshow.com/index...beirut-lebanon
    UPDATE 4:02 PM EDT --
    The warehouse which detonated in Beirut was, in fact, a MISSILE STORAGE WAREHOUSE, holding missiles and other weapons FROM IRAN, given to Hezbollah.
    This was NOT a fireworks factory fire.
    The question now is, WHY did that warehouse blow up?
    Sabotage?
    Defective weaponry?
    Act of war?
    What started the fire that triggered the explosion is key, and whether this is a deliberate act of destruction and/or sabotage. It's possible there is something fishy behind this. I've also read 'speculative' reports that a certain ship holding fertilizer out of Ukraine happened to be right there at the point of the blast. Which is fishy. A ship owned by Igor Kolomoisky, which is fishier.
    Because this happened this morning:
    FBI Raids Offices Of U.S. Companies Belonging To Ukrainian Tycoons
    The FBI has raided the offices of U.S. companies belonging to a Ukrainian tycoon linked to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
    The FBI searched offices in Cleveland and Miami on August 4 belonging to billionaire Ihor Kolomoyskiy, whose media company informally backed Zelenskiy's successful presidential bid in 2019.
    "I can confirm that we are at both locations," FBI Special Agent Vicki Anderson-Gregg confirmed in an August 4 telephone interview with RFE/RL from Cleveland.
    She said she could not discuss the details of the investigation as the case "is under seal right now." Anderson-Gregg said that no one had been detained in the raid.
    What all this means I have no idea, or if there's even a legitimate connection here. But it's interesting.
    Unfortunately a far wider area than just the docklands were destroyed. I do wonder what the death toll is, I guarantee it's more than 10.
    I find it very hard to believe this was caused by fireworks....
    According to a tweet from Lebanese President Michel Aoun, it was 2,750 tonnes (3,000 tons) of ammonium nitrate that had been stored there in a warehouse for the last 6 years.
    It certain wasn't only fireworks - see previous posts. I'm no expert on explosions so I couldn't say if ammonium nitrate (fertilizer) is truly to blame or some other chemical, or even munitions. The main question I'm asking is, was this an accident or was it intentional. Something started the initial fire. If it was intentional, who set it and for what reason? Maybe it was just an accident. But it seems very careless to store explosive material next to a fireworks factory. Whatever the case this is a tragedy, resulting in probably great loss of innocent life.
    This is interesting. Al Arabiya (TV news based in Dubai), says nothing about a fireworks factory. It blames the blast on a Hezbollah arms store in the port of Beirut. I have to admit, I didn't see any rockets spiralling or whistling through the air, no multicoloured sparks or trails of smoke. This is what other fireworks factory explosions look like (@29secs).
    There's lots more digging in the thread below.
    Edit: latest death count: 73, with 3,700+ injured according to above source.
