The Ontario Premiere just finished speaking live - Ontario will be locked down with the stay at home order for another 2 weeks.

It was odd though, as if he was trying to make things sound bad without having the stats to back it. Almost like the orders are from "a level above him" and he has to do what he is told. That is the feeling that I got from it. You know when someone is talking to you and they just don't come across as being truthful? It was like I could feel his stress because he was uncomfortable saying what he had to say. But maybe he is always sort of like that? Anyone else care to share an opinion on this?

What is new from the last few weeks?
- He said police will be stopping vehicles in order to ask them why they are out of their homes, where are they going and they have to show I.D. This is a push because police usually need probably cause and this crosses the line for Canadians (similar as in the U.S.) you don't have to give info like your name unless you have broken the law. I am sure most people will cooperate, but some will stand hard for their rights.

- He spoke about closing the borders to the provinces on our east and west borders. (Except to essential things.) He seemed to be asking (pleading?) with the National Government to bring stricter international border regulations.

- He was asking the Canadian government to provide Ontario with more vaccines - because that is what the problem is apparently.

- Essential businesses have to operate at 25% capacity. (But I thought we were already doing that.)

- He exclaimed that many people are arriving into Ontario through airlines and that we have to test them because they are bringing covid into our province. (But we already have this in place.)

- But they are going to close down golf courses. I mean come on - you know how many people congregate on those fairways. (yeah, sarcasm) Geeez, why not let people walk through a field with their friend? They stop, hit a ball and walk some more. Crazy.

- He said he saw a lot of people going into public parks and that has to stop. But he also said that it was ok to go outside and get exercise and walk your dog and stuff like that. So, I don't know where he was going with that.


There were a few other things, but really it felt like they are trying to make something out of nothing.

They said that they are stopping more surgeries and opening more beds in the hospitals.


There are 700 people in ICU in the hospitals in Ontario with covid (apparently, but it does not say the age of the people). The population in Ontario is around 14.5 million.

So, this is a critical situation? I think he used the word "inferno" or "like a wild fire". *sigh*

today the Daily News reported and updated the following:

• A leaked bulletin details how the 'law enforcement arm' of the USPS collected data as part of the Internet Covert Operations Program or iCOP
• Analysts are said to have looked through posts on Facebook, Parler and Telegram flagging 'inflammatory' messages to government agencies
• An alleged member of the right wing Proud Boys is named, among others who did not appear to have posted anything threatening in the memo
• It is unclear why the US Postal Inspection Service is putting resources into surveillance or how iCOP is funded; the USPS was hit hard by the pandemic
• One law professor said: 'I don't understand why the government would go to the Postal Service for examining the internet for security issues'
• The US Postal Inspection Service said it 'has federal law enforcement officers, Postal Inspectors, who enforce approximately 200 federal laws'
• It adds that iCOP 'assesses threats to Postal Service employees and its infrastructure by monitoring publicly available open source information'

University of Chicago law professor Geoffrey Stone told Yahoo: 'I don't understand why the government would go to the Postal Service for examining the internet for security issues.'

Rachel Levinson-Waldman, deputy director of the Brennan Center for Justice's liberty and national security program called the tracking 'bizarre'.

"As the nation reacts to the guilty verdict a jury handed to Derek Chauvin in the killing of George Floyd, Republican-led states are introducing punitive new measures governing protests."

"Republican legislators in Oklahoma and Iowa have passed bills granting immunity to drivers whose vehicles strike and injure protesters in public streets.

A Republican proposal in Indiana would bar anyone convicted of unlawful assembly from holding state employment, including elected office. A Minnesota bill would prohibit those convicted of unlawful protesting from receiving student loans, unemployment benefits or housing assistance.

And in Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed sweeping legislation this week that toughened existing laws governing public disorder and created a harsh new level of infractions — a bill he’s called “the strongest anti-looting, anti-rioting, pro-law-enforcement piece of legislation in the country.”

The measures are part of a wave of new anti-protest legislation, sponsored and supported by Republicans, in the 11 months since Black Lives Matter protests swept the country following the death of George Floyd. The Minneapolis police officer who killed Mr. Floyd, Derek Chauvin, was convicted on Tuesday on murder and manslaughter charges, a cathartic end to weeks of tension.

But while Democrats seized on Mr. Floyd’s death last May to highlight racism in policing and other forms of social injustice, Republicans responded to a summer of protests by proposing a raft of punitive new measures governing the right to lawfully assemble. G.O.P. lawmakers in 34 states have introduced 81 anti-protest bills during the 2021 legislative session — more than twice as many proposals as in any other year, according to Elly Page, a senior legal adviser at the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law, which tracks legislation limiting the right to protest."

Some, like Mr. DeSantis, are labeling them “anti-riot” bills, conflating the right to peaceful protest with the rioting and looting that sometimes resulted from such protests.

The laws carry forward the hyperbolic message Republicans have been pushing in the 11 months since Black Lives Matter protests against racial injustice swept the country: that Democrats are tolerant of violent and criminal actions from those who protest against racial injustice. And the legislation underscores the extent to which support for law enforcement personnel and opposition to protests have become part of the bedrock of G.O.P. orthodoxy and a likely pillar of the platform the party will take into next year’s midterms.

“This is consistent with the general trend of legislators’ responding to powerful and persuasive protests by seeking to silence them rather than engaging with the message of the protests,” said Vera Eidelman, a lawyer at the American Civil Liberties Union. “If anything, the lesson from the last year, and decades, is not that we need to give more tools to police and prosecutors, it’s that they abuse the tools they already have.”

Laws already exist to punish rioting, and civil rights advocates worry that the new bills violate rights of lawful assembly and free speech protected under the First Amendment. The overwhelming majority of last summer’s nationwide Black Lives Matter protests were peaceful — more than 96 percent involved no property damage or police injuries, according to The Washington Post, which also found that police officers or counterprotesters often instigated violence.

Most of the protests held across Florida last summer were also peaceful, though a few in Miami, Tampa and Jacksonville produced some episodes of violence, including the burning of a police car and a sporting goods store. Still, as they embraced the bill that Mr. DeSantis signed into law, Republican leaders expressed scorn for cities that trim police budgets and tolerate protesters who disrupt business and traffic.

“We weren’t going to allow Florida to become Seattle,” said Chris Sprowls, a Republican who is the speaker of the Florida House, mentioning cities where protests lasted for months last year and demonstrators frequently clashed with the police. “We were not going to allow Florida to become Portland.”

George Floyd death: Protests erupt across U.S.

The Florida law imposes harsher penalties for existing public disorder crimes, turning misdemeanor offenses into felonies, creating new felony offenses and preventing defendants from being released on bail until they have appeared before a judge. A survey conducted in January by Ryan D. Tyson, a Republican pollster, found broad support in the state for harsher penalties against protesters “who damage personal and business property or assault law enforcement.”

But the law goes farther. If a local government chooses to decrease its law enforcement budget — to “defund the police,” as Mr. DeSantis put it — the measure provides a new mechanism for a prosecutor or a city or county commissioner to appeal the reduction to the state.

The law also increases penalties for taking down monuments, including Confederate ones, making the offense a second-degree felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison. It makes it easier for anyone who injures a protester, such as by driving into a crowd, to escape civil liability."

Scoop: Caitlyn Jenner makes it official for California governor

AXIOM reported today:

Former Olympic decathlete and reality TV star Caitlyn Jenner on Friday officially announced her bid for governor of California.

The big picture:

Jenner, a longtime Republican, is seeking to replace Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom in a recall election, hoping her celebrity status and name recognition can yield an upset in the nation's most populous state.

• But in deep-blue California, she's decidedly not branding herself as a Trump Republican even as she's counting on some of the former president's advisers to drive her strategy.

She's assembled a team

of prominent GOP operatives including Tony Fabrizio, the top pollster on Donald Trump's 2016 and 2020 campaigns, Ryan Erwin, founder of RedRock Strategies, and Tyler Deaton, president of Allegiance Strategies.

• She's also hired Steven Cheung, a former Trump White House and campaign communications hand who worked on Arnold Schwarzenegger's successful 2003 recall campaign.
• Trump's former campaign manager Brad Parscale, a personal friend of Jenner’s, has helped her assemble her team but doesn’t plan to take an official title on the campaign.
• The campaign's website and WinRed donation page are set to go live today.

Jenner said in a statement

that "Sacramento needs an honest leader with a clear vision" and that "for the past decade, we have seen the glimmer of the Golden State reduced by one-party rule that places politics over progress and special interests over people."

• The statement decries California's taxes as "too high" and criticizes an "over-restrictive lockdown" response to the COVID pandemic including on in-person schooling.
• "This is Gavin Newsom’s California, where he orders us to stay home but goes out to dinner with his lobbyist friends."

A campaign adviser tells Axios

that Jenner has greater name ID than Newsom and can command the kind of earned media that "will go to every possible demographic you could think of."

Jenner, a trans woman, "is very socially liberal,” the adviser said. "She's running as someone that's socially liberal and fiscally conservative."

Don't forget:

Jenner publicly voiced support for Trump until 2018, when he rolled back federal guidelines allowing transgender students to use bathrooms of their choice. "My hope in him ... was misplaced," she wrote.

"

• Certainly she has not seen eye-to-eye with [Trump] on a lot of things," the adviser said. "I think that Caitlyn will talk to anyone, Democrat or Republican. Donald Trump is not going to be the deciding factor for the state of California."

The big picture:

Jenner's team is convinced that the race is "totally winnable," but recent polling shows the scale of the challenge.

• A statewide survey this month had support for recalling Newsom at just 40 percent.
• That's just one of two contests Jenner would have to win—if a majority votes to recall Newsom, voters then select from the huge group of candidates vying to replace him.

Tip #1: Learn about this shower’s radiant point. If you trace the paths of all the Lyrid meteors backward, they seem to radiate from the constellation Lyra the Harp, near the brilliant star Vega. A rising actor, fake HBO deals and one of Hollywood’s most audacious Ponzi schemes

"The promise of easy money brought Jim Russell to a bar at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Russell, a steel company executive from Las Vegas, had come to meet Zachary Horwitz, a low-level actor seeking investors for his film company.

Horwitz made it sound simple: He would use Russell’s money to buy the rights to cheap movies — “Slasher Party,” “Satanic Panic” and the like — and then resell them to HBO for distribution in Latin America. He’d pay Russell back in six months with a 15% profit.

Russell had already wired Horwitz more than half a million dollars after a friend vouched for the 30-year-old actor.

Now, Horwitz was offering a chance to invest much more.

At dinner that night in 2017, Russell was intrigued but nervous. What would happen if HBO declined to buy the rights to a film, he asked.

“HBO has never backed out,” Horwitz replied, according to Russell.
Over the next two years, Russell and his partners made $80 million in loans to the actor’s company. They thought they were financing scores of deals to buy and sell film rights.

In reality, they’d been lured into what federal investigators describe as one of the most audacious Ponzi schemes in Hollywood history.

Horwitz collected $690 million from investors for movie deals authorities say were fictitious. The HBO and Netflix contracts he used to convince Russell and others that his business was legitimate were forgeries, the government says.

For years, Horwitz kept the con going by using loans from one group of investors to repay what he’d borrowed from another, according to a federal criminal complaint. The investors are now trying to recover $235 million that he never repaid.

The alleged scam opened a money spigot that enabled the actor to live like a studio boss in a lavish Westside home with a screening room, prosecutors say. Horwitz traveled by private jet.

His April 6 arrest on a fraud charge followed a century-old Hollywood tradition of accused swindlers running get-rich-quick schemes that exploit investors’ attraction to the glamour of a movie business they know little about.

Hundreds of emails, text messages and other documents filed in court in Los Angeles and Chicago reveal the vast scale of Horwitz’s operation and show how it ultimately spun out of control. Lawyers for Horwitz, 34, did not respond to requests for comment.

His alleged victims include three of his close friends from college, who roped in parents, grandparents, siblings, in-laws and others, some of whom lost their retirement savings, said Brian Michael, the friends’ attorney.

“It’s been financially catastrophic and emotionally devastating,” he said.

The financial collapse came just as Horwitz’s acting career — under the screen name Zach Avery — was taking off. He starred last year in “Last Moment of Clarity” with Brian Cox, who plays the patriarch Logan Roy on the HBO series “Succession.” He also has a leading role in the upcoming thriller “Gateway,” a feature film with Olivia Munn and Bruce Dern.

Two filmmakers said producers sometimes “attached” Horwitz to a cast regardless of talent.

In a scene from “Trespassers,” a 2018 horror film shot in Malibu, Horwitz writhes on the deck of a swimming pool with a thick dagger plunged into his belly. The director, Orson Oblowitz, was unimpressed by his acting, but he also said he wondered whether the actor’s arrest might bestow “a new cult status” on the movie.

“It’s mind-blowing,” he said. “This dude does not strike me as a criminal mastermind. I am amazed.”
