the idea of beauty. calling something beautiful , is very perplexing to me. I always ask myself, do animals perceive a beautiful sunset?

is there beauty in the act of killing, such as a cheetah and its prey. there are beautiful people i consider ugly, and ugly people who are very beautiful

nature has some incredible design, that is quite frightening. parasites, virus , diseases , all natural. perfect working systems are beautiful

this really goes back to love. Really what love is is extremely badly understood (I think we can safely blame holliwood for that) . Love actually is the natural state.

It's well known for example that true mastery in any domain takes 10 thousand hours (almost without exception) --(as well as significant god given tallent).

This also relates to the word 'work'. Apparently there are some tribes that don't have a word for 'work'. (saw that in a Bill Ryan interview recently). -- but actually it's completely true, the puritanical concept of 'work' is very ill conceived.

No one does 10 thousand hours to achieve mastery dutiously -- or for some externality -- they do it because they love the thing itself.

There were some studies one of my lecturers at University was talking about (Maggy Boden) -- that suggest that creativity is actually negatively affected by external reward. When the interest is intrinsic that's when creativity happens, when the interest is external reward, according to studies, output is much less creative.

There might be good football players that don't love football, there might be good chess players who don't love chess, but it's a fairly safe bet that there are no truly great ones who don't.

Another good example is software -- if you look into it, most of the stuff that really works in computer software that nearly all modern opperating systems come from -- came from the non proprietary software geniuses who simply loved the thing itself. (many of whom were never driven by financial greed) (see doc Revolution OS on yt).

I think it's a pretty good bet that bees love polen. It's our natural state and relates to well function. Beauty is similar -- symmetry being linked with healthe phenotype. Like polen informationally rich internally consistent things are beautiful to the human mind. (for example fractals).

I have always been attracted to what I term 'strange' beauty. It is the type of beauty that requires contemplation to appreciate, and the more you focus on it the more beautiful it becomes. The beauty of this type shines radiant and yet surprisingly perplexing because it can hide as easily as it appears...

The beauty of nature is breathtaking. It is an interlaced tapestry built upon simplicity and dependent upon an enduring vitality and a tenacious ability to adapt and persevere. Born and born again, life just continues in an ever astounding cornucopia of unique forms, forever expressing perfection in a myriad of iterations.

Life itself, the idea of life, is beautiful. It is an incredible intention of unimaginable depth and breadth; a complexity of simplicity.

It is is a balm to bask in it, to stroll through the natural world intent on its marvels. Yet even in our cities and in our dwellings, even when we attempt to isolate and insulate ourselves, we can never be apart from it. When we remember we are grounded, rooted even, in life and supported by the natural world it revitalizes and recharges our souls while it realigns personal priorities and reasserts what is valuable and what is not.

Nature's laws are practical, efficient, and exacting - and they are few.

    There is beauty in that.
Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless — like water...Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend. Bruce Lee

Free will can only be as free as the mind that conceives it.

It takes a certain level of consciousness to perceive beauty. When the first human being looked out over the plains and viewed the mountains, sky and the animals he did not know that this was the world. That truly was the moment of creation.

Last night I sat on the ground with my dog and my horse and we watched the sun go down. They seemed to enjoy it. It was peaceful and quiet, the world was in complete isostasy for just a little while. Perhaps some would say the dog and the horse were there because I was there. I am not sure. But there we were, the three of us watching the sky flash brilliant colors and finally die into darkness. We sat there in the quiet for a few minutes after the show was over. Just listening. And breathing. I wish the entire world could be as peaceful as that moment.

Jeez, Tom, that little snarky insult was unnecessary. Do be a little kinder at this time of year (or even always!) — kindness is rather needed at the moment.

Nature does beauty best. That's for sure. Ayn Rand, who had a huge pile of flaws, never understood that.

Sorry, but I thought that a message making fun of Ayn Rand, completely with smiley face, would not have been attacked by someone unless they woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

A random act of love from a tree. The world is indeed beautiful.
