Default Ten Things Time Has Taught Me

    Donna Ashworth

This article was primarily aimed at women but I feel this is good advice for everybody.

    1. Most of our life is spent chasing false goals and worshipping false ideals. The day you realise that is the day you really start to live.

    2. You really, truly cannot please all of the people all of the time. Please yourself first and your loved ones second, everyone else is busy pleasing themselves anyway, trust me.

    3. Fighting the ageing process is like trying to catch the wind. Go with it, enjoy it. Your body is changing, but it always has been. Don’t waste time trying to reverse that, instead change your mindset to see the beauty in the new.

    4. Nobody is perfect and nobody is truly happy with their lot. When that sinks in you are free of comparison and free of judgement. It’s truly liberating.

    5. No one really sees what you do right, everyone sees what you do wrong. When that becomes clear to you, you will start doing things for the right reason and you will start having so much more fun.

    6. You will regret the years you spent berating your looks, the sooner you can make peace with the vessel your soul lives in, the better. Your body is amazing and important but it does not define you.

    7. Your health is obviously important but stress, fear and worry are far more damaging than any delicious food or drink you may deny yourself. Happiness and peace are the best medicine.

    8. Who will remember you and for what, become important factors as you age. Your love and your wisdom will live on far longer than any material thing you can pass down. Tell your stories, they can travel farther than you can imagine.

    9. We are not here for long but if you are living against the wind it can feel like a life-sentence. Life should not feel like a chore, it should feel like an adventure.

    10. Always, always, drink the good champagne and use the things you keep for ‘best’. Tomorrow is guaranteed to no one. Today is a gift that’s why we call it the present. Eat, Drink & Be Merry.

    11. I am going to add one more to the list which has held me in good stead. Never leave your silver bullets in the chamber. Use them when you have them.

Imagine how much easier our lives could have been if we had accepted this at an early age!

    1. Take risks.
    2. Be kind.
    3. Make clear decisions. If they're wrong, you'll find out faster.
    4. Look after your body. It's the only horse you can ride this lifetime.
    5. Count to 10 (or 100, or 1000) if you're angry. But if your anger is justified, serves a purpose, and is well-directed, then never be afraid of it.
    6. Be kind to animals. They're just like you, but they just can't speak.
    7. The moment you think you know everything, you're just incorrect.
    8. Look for beauty in everything. It's always there to be found.
    9. Don't waste time collecting too many toys. You can't take them with you when you leave.
    10. Do spend time on your learning, growth, and spiritual development. That's what you will take with you.

10 off the top of my head. no one asked for them but here they are anyway:

    1) be specific with your speech and actions. keep your word

    2) have self-respect but don't be afraid to laugh at yourself

    3) when you're in a crisis, recall your last crisis, and remind yourself that at some point you stopped caring about it and will eventually care little about the current one. feel your feelings, honor them, and then move on as best you can.

    4) don't be afraid to sing and dance by yourself, preferably with some guinness

    5) don't put stuff off, even menial tasks. do them right as you're thinking of them, if you can

    6) do lots of reading and writing. your highest gift is found in articulated speech. it gives order and coherence to your world, and the world. it teaches you how to think.

    7) express gratitude for everything, even a glass of water. it fosters a proper attitude towards life and the earth itself. it's never been easier to be alive. we're all wildly lucky

    8) have a clear goal or set of goals. there must always be light at the end of the tunnel. we all need a purpose to endure some of the madness and monotony we all face. and dream big. whatever your goal is, multiply it times 5, and go for that. that way even if you come up short you will have still hit the mark

    9) don't be consumed with attaining happiness. try for fulfillment instead. happiness is fleeting. it's a fickle beast, coming and going as it pleases. often we don't know why it's present or not present. when it arrives, express gratitude and enjoy it. when it departs, do not fret - just be pleased it arrived to begin with and be content with that. trying too hard for happiness will often leave you miserable.

    10) strive to be creative in some way. be an artist of some sort. art is sustenance for the soul, just like food is for the body. good art rises up into the heavens and grabs a bit of divinity and brings it back to earth for a while so we can all enjoy and be inspired by it. good art can get you thru a bad day, week, month, year...or even a bad life.

Accept people as beautiful exactly where they are.

I think more than ever, because of our impatience, our need to be right, our pent up anger over world uncertainty, we judge unfairly. I have a ****load of family members who do not align with my beliefs at all and either thump their Bible at me or scoff at my supernatural views as the black sheep of the family since forever, and even though I come from an educated seasoned stand point, their perception remains as I am literally off planet and not in the reality. Well glad I am because then I would be like them. But this statement of accepting people where they are is age old wisdom. It is hard, it is uncomfortable and it is futile even, but doing so lessens the pain that plagues you that they being friends or family will not follow your awakened path.

I am almost positive many of you have faced this dilemma and you had to walk away from the drama.

I have had to as well. But then out of love for their soul I accepted their placement in growth, even if it meant tolerating their false accusations of who I am. The climb is not easy, for many it takes many attempts. The veil does not part because you or I say it does. Whatever the trigger is for the consciousness to bloom is not our problem. It is personal and timely. We cannot force a child to crawl or walk until their moment arrives. Thus, we just love and accept the stage that soul is in.

Happy [Better] New Year to all!
When you realize where you come from, you naturally become tolerant, disinterested, amused, kindhearted as a grandparent, dignified as a king. -- I Ching

yeah, very simplistic way.. if I remember well we were talking about suffering, and sometimes there is nothing much to do but let it go, hence it will pass eventually.

To some "let go" can also mean "giving up too fast too easy" (=defeatism) falsely assuming you are "incompetent" by default ... not using your God-given potential/talents/gifts/creativity ... which is a defeatist attitude.

... if you believe you can or "can not" you are absolutely right ...

Not all people who complain are the same ... enough use it to set new priorities, brainstorm how to do things differently ... thus FACING the issue and move on! ... Different kind of letting go.

How parents teach their children how to deal with (temporary) suffering, disappointments, set-backs, loss in life are often not done "verbally" but more psychologically & body-language. That is programmed in to the children without people realizing it. Semi-traumatic energies that I call: "victim mentality breeds more than often more victim reality" (fatalism/despotism) ... When continued the next generation of children will do too on and on ... until you break the chain of (psychological) conditioning.

well, if a person has something going on, that causes a great pain, why should they keep going with that? just let it go, it is not defeatism, at least I don't see that way. A self-victimization would endure the pain and keep torturing themselves over and over again and always giving an excuse for this and that.

Sometimes all we have to do is to listen instead of ask questions, we don't know everything or had all experiences in life.

By the way thanks for your post.

I heard it long time ago from a Sufi.

    "Everything will pass."
including platitudistic assumptions sold by Sufi's
yeah, very simplistic way.. if I remember well we were talking about suffering, and sometimes there is nothing much to do but let it go, hence it will pass eventually.

How you see yourself is key to the Universe

well, if a person has something going on, that causes a great pain, why should they keep going with that? just let it go, it is not defeatism, at least I don't see that way. A self-victimization would endure the pain and keep torturing themselves over and over again and always giving an excuse for this and that.

Sometimes all we have to do is to listen instead of ask questions, we don't know everything or had all experiences in life.

I never ever claim you have to "hold on to pain" ... but it does serve a purpose, a signal, if recognized correctly to transform it or to use it to become wiser and move on ... some want to ignore it all together thus not learning anything = creating a "blind spot".

So in essence the way HOW you deal with pain/suffering, set-backs, disappointments, loss etc. in my view determines & shapes your personality.

    cheers,
    John

No need to follow anyone, only consider broadening (y)our horizon of possibilities ...

I agree with your first sentence.

I think your second sentence worth a comment, I am not suggesting anything here, but personality is a hard issue to deal with and it can be translated simply as Ego and
people distinguish at least in three different points on it: individual level, between individuals, and between groups of individuals.

We have to perceive between a man as he is in essence, and as he is in ego/personality. We [man] are perfect in essence, fearless, and in a loving unity with the entire cosmos; there is no conflict within themselves or between the person and others. When the ego begins to develop, karma accumulates, there is a transition from objectivity to subjectivity; man falls from essence into personality/ego.

That's the bottom line of "let it go" of our Ego.

I love this quote from unknown source
"The caterpillar cannot understand the butterfly."
