Cool video! ... I see a possible problem with this clip though ...

In 1939 this would have been taken on film. Film cameras back then only operated at 18 or 24 FPS max. The smoothness of the movement of the object appears to me to be higher than 24 FPS. I'm not 100% sure - its hard to tell because its moving slow, I would have to DL the video and analyze it further to be sure, but that's what my eyes are initially telling me. Could be wrong though.

I'm feeling an idea for another VFX project coming on ... thanks for the share!

    • I saw very similar uncut version in a German UFO collection by Michael Hesemann on a VHS tape made in ±1995 more than 25 years ago.

I'm not quite sure, if you see these videos, is not very very different in the end?

    The boxing cats

    Annie Oakley

Scenes of Theodore Roosevelt at Sagamore Hill, 1912

Those seem smooth enough to compare, but maybe actual question is, who had such a great camera other than to record important historical events? And who would have such extreme expensive camera and just happen to be there to film this specific event?

ETA: The film artifacts, look a bit fake to me, when compared to real ones on the other videos from the US Library

I think what my eyes are seeing is that the UFO object seems to be moving at a faster frame rate than the rest of the video -- as though it was rendered at 30 fps, then composited on to maybe a 24fps original video (or rather, a 24 fps video used as the backdrop for rendering a 30FPS composite, of which the UFO is part of).

It would be fairly easy to fake -- I'm thinking of doing something similar (as an art project)

Also, It would make more sense if the video was perhaps showing rare uncovered, German military video showing a test flight at an air force base (the video says "test flight" but there's an awful lot of buildings - and one that looks like an apartment building - is that where you would test experimental aircraft?).

This looks like it just "happens" to be flying through a city and just "happens" to get caught on someone's movie camera out their apartment window and they started recording at exactly the moment the object begins to appear. No time needed to go to the closet, grab the camera, load/wind the film, turn it on (wind up the mechanism?), etc?

I don't think that everyone back in 1939 just happened to have movie cameras in their pockets they could whip out and capture something like this in the moment while hanging out on their apartment balcony like we do with our phones today. But it might be understandable that one might accidentally project a bit of our current reality back to a time while creating such a video, assuming this is not legit. (Which I'm somewhat thinking its not, but I still think its a cool clip and you never know. )

Definitely see that as well, it 'doesn't belong' in every frame as we see it, also i think the camera at some point moves a bit against the movement of the 'UFO', as in the UFO moves into the other direction on its own, while the came doesn't follow the same direction, but need to review that again to be very exact

Just one thought: if a fake, why was the camera running?
What was the camera person filming if not something rising up moving over and then down?

At this point, i don't even think there was a camera, at all, it was all faked

But.. Because it was total opposite? There was no UFO, the scene was filmed on purpose to later add the object and then modified to make it look according to the decade

We should get someone from Germany to tell us what building is that, and if it's still around, and if not, then we can compare with old pictures and so on..

My initial thoughts were exactly in line with that Dedukshyn said. This does not look like film, but video. Also, the backdrop is suspicious. It looks like a built up area, you can even see a residential high rise on the landscape. No one is going to be testing highly sensitive experimental technology in an urban environment. I call fake.

This could easily be done over still image - a photograph, with all the camera movement and artifacts faked. In fact I am still thinking about how I'm going to do my version and that is initially what I was going to do, so I scoured over old 1939 photographs today trying to find a good one. I'm thinking now I'll just create all the buildings and items in the scene -- the video is poor quality enough that if I replicate it I won't need to add any colours, textures or details at all, so it won't take to long to do that either.
