I mean, what else is there to say. It’s Thanos. He killed off half the universe for a time.

He did, but not out of pure evil and wish to harm, he did because he was mistaken on what the good/bad stuff means for conscious life, he went into pure basic monster 'i am' fake purity of soul

Great thread idea, and an almost impossibly hard one to commit just one character to.

My personal favourite who had precious few if not actually zero redeeming traits, of any kind, may still remain the peerless Gary Oldman in his role as Norman Stansfield in "Leon: The Professional" but is he actually truly scary? Therein lies my problem here

The character is deeply unpleasant and flawed beyond measure. I'm sure I'll remember some others but Dennis Hopper's Frank Booth already mentioned here ranks right up there. (I'm going to go on a trip down memory lane and try to remember some other dastardly swine...)
Gary Oldman, yes, he is! i have met a couple persons like that, someone who just by looking you in the eye makes you tremble inside like never before, in fear, incapable of moving, as if a bear was holding your throat expecting you to move because it wants to know if you are dead or not yet, and the bear locks into your eyes to see if you move them around. That's fear that Gary Oldman really shows here, several times. I know people like him, it's so real, so yes

This isn't from a film, but a series of TV episodes of "Law and Order" (so I hope this qualifies!)

"William Lewis" a murderous sociopath from several episodes of "Law and Order SVU". (2013-2014).

For some gender balance, here's Misery. I felt physically sick at this scene, it haunted me for days!

Has to be Loki, from the first Avengers movie.

(But he may be disqualified, as he was also so much fun )

I can’t disagree with any of the meanies already posted here…… but my meanie of choice would be Gene Hackman playing the Sheriff in the film Unforgiven…..don’t know how to post a picture of him but for me he was a real nasty in this film.

BRIGANTIA/ PERFECT CHOICE! with KATHY BATES in Misery .

PIEMAN / yes hackman was great and brutal on poor English Bob. Both both these people as mean as the were, had personality, laughter and a certain good side.

See Woody in Out of the Furnace. Im sticking with him.

Bill , not sure I saw Loki, but if he was fun, he can't compete with Woody

Since I watched it a few days ago on Netflix I think this is a really good candidate for this thread:

US Army Colonel Richard Strickland played by Michael Shannon in 'The Shape Of Water'.

Btw, the answer to his last question is "F... Y...".

I also know another very good female villain (although not entirely one-dimensional evil) but it would be in a TV show, does it count?

I got that as well, surface level, in the movies.

At the deepest level, he was a pure psychopath with no inherent morality or empathy for others, even when he killed his "daughter" his tears were for himself.

All the rest was an act.

Okay. So my vote for best female villain in a TV show (btw, Annie Wilkes in Misery mentioned above would indeed also be the best in a movie for me) goes to Aunt Lydia from the Handmaid's Tale.

Cannot say if she is truly deeply evil psychopath since she has a back-story that is shed light upon in season 3 and in some situations even expresses seemingly real 'love' and commitment for 'her' girls (also to be seen in the stone revolt video below). However, where this actually comes from is not clear to me since it is also used in a highly manipulative manner.

This event shown in the second video was only one of her several promised punishments for that stone revolt then ...

Another which comes to mind is 'Don Logan' from 'Sexy Beast' played by Ben Kingsley. Who would've thought Gandhi could be so terrifying!

I'm a fanboy of old school horror movies. Off topic but I've noticed VHS enthusiasts like myself tend to gravitate towards old school and sometimes shoddy horror movies.

My answer would probably be the Yellow King from the first season of True Detective:

Honorable mentions: Pennywise and Freddy Kruger

Yes! The gal in the short-shorts (for lack of a better term) lets out the most terrifying scream I've heard to date in any film. It gives me goosebumps.

Since this is the last page and I appear to be constantly having the last word, like it or not, here goes. When I was sixteen, on Saturdays we would go to the movies. Although I cannot remember the characters or even much about the plot, I saw "House of Wax." Something about that movie, the horror, struck my soul so deeply, that if I know the movie is a horror movie, I would arrange not to see it. My shock was so profound, at the deepest level of my soul, which I cannot explain, that I gravitate to everything that is the opposite.

Two masterpiece of Stanley Kubrick, A Clockwork Orange and The Shining, I can't say which one is the best one, Kubrick was always on edge when making movies.
