Hungary’s Orban declares plan for "national consultations" on sanctions against Russia

Viktor Orban added that he was categorically against the "continuation and deepening" of hostilities and called for "immediate peace talks and a ceasefire"

VIENNA, September 26. /TASS/. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban told parliament on Monday he would hold "national consultations" in order to find out what the Hungarians really think about the sanctions imposed by the EU on Russia, the Magyar Nemzet newspaper reports.

"The sanctions [against Russia] were introduced in an undemocratic way. It was a decision by the bureaucrats in Brussels, for which the European peoples are now paying. We need to know the opinion of the people. For the first time in Europe, in Hungary, we will ask for the opinion of the people concerning the sanctions. <...> National consultations will be launched. The Hungarian people will be able to express their opinion whether they support them and if they are in favor of introducing new ones," Orban said.

He believes that the conflict in Ukraine would have been local, but the economic sanctions imposed by the West against Russia had lent it a global dimension. He called for getting ready to see protracted hostilities, adding that "the US and the EU are helping Ukraine with money, while Russia's resources are inexhaustible."

Orban added that he was categorically against the "continuation and deepening" of hostilities and called for "immediate peace talks and a ceasefire."

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a special military operation following a request from the leaders of the Donbass republics for help. He stressed that Moscow's plans did not include an occupation of Ukrainian territories, its goals being the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The West, in response to Russia's decision, began to gradually introduce numerous large-scale sanctions. Along with this, the Western states started supplying weapons and military equipment to Kiev. The value of the hardware already provided is estimated at tens of billions of dollars.

US’ position on Snowden unchanged: he must stand trial in US — Department of State

Mr. Snowden should return to the United States where he should face justice as any other American citizen would, Ned Price said
WASHINGTON, September 26. /TASS/. The United States thinks that despite his Russian citizenship, former CIA employee Edward Snowden is a US national and must return to the country to face justice, US Department of State Spokesperson Ned Price said on Monday.

"Our position hasn't changed. Mr. Snowden should return to the United States where he should face justice as any other American citizen would," he said. "Perhaps the only thing that has changed is that as a result of his Russian citizenship, apparently now he may well be conscripted (to the Russian army)."

Snowden’s US passport was annulled in 2013, but the White House explained back then that it was a routine legal procedure following the issuance of an arrest warrant and his status of citizenship was unchanged.

It was reported earlier on Monday that Snowden has been granted Russian citizenship by a presidential decree.

In 2013, Snowden leaked information on the methods of electronic surveillance by US intelligence services, including illegally wiretapping foreign leaders. Fleeing from prosecution, Snowden sent requests for asylum to some countries, including Russia. On August 1, 2014, he received a Russian residence permit.

In the United States, Snowden is charged with two counts of violating the Espionage Act. He may face up to ten years in prison on each of the counts. The US authorities have repeatedly stated that they consider Snowden a traitor who caused grave damage to national security.

Snowden’s attorney, Anatoly Kucherena, said on Monday that his client, as a Russian citizen, cannot be called up within the ongoing partial mobilization. "He cannot be called up because, under Russian laws, he has never served in the Russian army and is not a reservist," he explained.

Former Ukrainian soldiers called up in Crimea and Sevastopol take oath

Mikhail Razvozhayev said earlier that nearly 3-4% of Sevastopol residents will fall under partial mobilization declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin
SEVASTOPOL, September 26. /TASS/. Called up servicemen, who served in the Ukrainian army before Crimea’s reunification with Russia, have taken allegiance to Russia on Monday, Vyacheslav Rodionov, deputy commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet said.

"More than 2,000 people are present here. Specialists: riflemen, grenade launcher operators, ATGM operators, artillerists, combat vehicle drivers. They took the oath today and now will begin training. Time will show which tasks will be posed to them," Rodionov said.

According to Sevastopol governor Mikhail Razvozhayev, the military oath ceremony was held for those draftees who "were in reserve, served in the Ukrainian army and did not serve in the Russian armed forces." There are 60 such draftees. These people will be sent to the place of deployment on Tuesday.

Razvozhayev said earlier that nearly 3-4% of Sevastopol residents will fall under partial mobilization declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Those called up will be paid a lump sum of 200,000 rubles (3,439 US dollars) as financial assistance.

Military operation can become counter-terrorist after referendums — head of Crimea

SIMFEROPOL, September 26. /TASS/. The special military operation will effectively become a counter-terrorist one in case of accession of Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions to Russia, head of Crimea Sergey Aksyonov believes.

"A certain point of no return will be passed soon. Acquisition of a new status for the liberated territories will put an end to uncertainty. They will become fully-fledged regions of the Russian Federation. And we will effectively carry out not a special military operation, but a counter-terrorist operation on our own territories," Aksyonov said on his Telegram channel Monday.

Speaking about the referendums in Donbass and the liberated territories, he expressed his opinion that the "people of [these] regions have long decided on their legitimate choice."

Referendums on accession to Russia currently take place in Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as in Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions. Russian President Vladimir Putin underscored that Moscow will support a decision made during these referendums.

I would like to take a second and rant, my apologies if it ruffles a few feathers but mine fell back in place when I finished writing this.

One of the major consequences of war is the impact on the mental health of civilians and soldiers, it is tremendously significant. Not one person in the war zone escapes, not men, women, children, the elderly, the disabled or even our pets. There is a definite increase in the incidence and prevalence of severe mental disorders in all people but especially women. The long-term effects of war are simple, it destroys countries, communities, families and individuals. The suicide rate of those participating and those that are impacted by war catapults to obscene levels, these souls are lost forever.

Wars do not make men or countries great, but they do bring out the greatness in good men. War is romantic only to those who are far away from the horrific sounds, turmoil, destruction, blood and death on the battlefield. Romanticizing war is an idiots game played by politicians, mainstream media moguls and only those that have something to gain.

To make war work it needs a villain, the bigger the better, this justifies the chaotic death and destruction on a grand scale and makes the hero (usually a false champion) shine a bit brighter. It forces people to choose sides even those that have no material interest in the war. Once you choose sides you are participating and condoning in the murder and destruction of war. Once you have chosen sides you have become a willing pawn in the system, you might as well be on the battlefield with a weapon. The game cannot be played without a villain, the game cannot be play without participants.

A sea change needs to take place regarding how we think about our political leadership. Politicians that discuss or suggest war as a real option to solve problems need to be removed from leadership roles. If one country or village has a grievance with another there should be a mechanism to hash it out with words and diplomacy, not hate and guns.

We need to flip our priorities, memorializing science, invention, creative thinking and altruistic behaviour not war and death.

I realize that as a people we are far away from what I describe above but if we don't start putting our thoughts about war out in the universe nothing will ever change.

I realize that as a people we are far away from what I describe above but if we don't start putting our thoughts about war out in the universe nothing will ever change.

It is not just war that is as old as man, but conflict as well. Nature in all forms is quite violent; over a meal; humans are not exempt.

33% of women are subjected to physical abuse in the united states and that is barely what is reported. The land of the free and it makes you wonder what goes on in some people's homes. Why couldn't the land of the free get this one figured out?

War is the highest escalated conflict on the planet. I've said before if we can't get things right with basic psychology in the home and the school yard, we'll never get it right beyond diplomacy. And there is so much that can be done in the average home and school yard.

The lessor of two evils applies here and in every other conflict; violent or otherwise. People can choose to ignore it and not pick sides and that is fine. But I contend that the very nature of humanity is to pick sides or we would not have so much sport, so much competition in many other areas besides sport that to not pick a side is sort of impartial and dare I say it: careless.

Calculated and decisive selection is an intelligent manner to address these out of reach or impersonal conflicts. To have an opinion of the impersonal conflict isn't exactly wrong behaviour; however disagreeable.
Irishness is not primarily a question of birth or blood or language; it is the condition of being involved in the Irish situation, and usually of being mauled by it. ~ Conor C. O'Brien [1917-2oo8]

    • Republicans WON’T Fund Ukraine War! Dem Senator Threatens:

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut is worried that if the GOP takes over either house of Congress in the midterm elections, that will spell the end for funding the war in Ukraine. Journalistic servants of empire Paul Waldman and Greg Sargent dutifully repeat Murphy’s words in the pages of the Washington Post, raising the alarm and fearmongering about the calamitous lack of war that might ensue if Republicans win an electoral victory. Jimmy and America’s comedian Kurt Metzger discuss the surprising turnabout in today’s political landscape where Democrats support war that Republicans oppose.

    Brilliant post and correct.
All the above is all and only my opinion - all subject to change and not meant to be true for anyone else regardless of how I phrase it.

JUST IN - Following the pressure drop in Nord Stream 2, a pressure drop has now also been recorded in both lines of Nord Stream 1, the operator says.

Gonzalo Lira argues (fairly convincingly!) that this is US sabotage, principally aimed at sinking the EU economy.

My significant other is Russian. Today she spoke with her family and after days of doubt, the ones likely to be conscripted moved to Azerbajan with their families, and plan to follow to Israel where they have some friends that will house them. Fortunately, they have non reserve people who can take care of their businesses in Russia.

The general feeling is pretty clear. They are not mobilising 300.000. It seems to be way way more.
Can you possibly say more about this? You used the word 'conscripted', but as best I understand it's a call-up of a limited number of reservists who have all been in the military before, most of whom have no problem with serving their country again.

Also, as best I understand, the reservists' call-up papers have already been issued, so it's not a matter of people 'likely' to be called up... they've either been called up, or they've not. (Unless the people you know are concerned about possible future expansion of the call-up in ways that have not been announced.)

It's also hard to believe the number of reservists currently being called up is more than officially stated. There'd be a huge social media outcry if that ever became known, and I'm not aware of any dispute about the numbers.

The Russian MoD is usually very carefully accurate and truthful about what it states, though sometimes it omits information. But over the last 6 months, they've not been lying about any numbers of anything or anyone. Too many people are watching, all over the world, and there's too much at stake for their official information to be incorrect.

If there's any way you can expand on what you've heard and what you believe you know, that might be very interesting and helpful.
