Ex-Russian president names key reason for Ukraine conflict
Kiev’s nuclear ambitions spurred Moscow’s military operation, Dmitry Medvedev said

Ukraine’s threat to resume its nuclear program was one of the key reasons that forced Russia to launch its military operation in late February, former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev said on Monday.

Writing on the Russian social media network Vkontakte, he argued that the Ukrainian authorities are now “crying bitterly” over their decision to relinquish the nuclear arsenal they inherited after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Kiev made this decision after caving in to “harsh pressure of their current masters in Washington,” Medvedev, who currently serves as deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, stated. He added that all Ukrainian presidents – from the late Leonid Kravchuk to the incumbent Vladimir Zelensky – described the step as a forced one.

However, according to the official, Kiev has made clear that it “would be diabolically happy” to use nukes against Russia and “their own citizens”.

“They have been dropping explicit hints about this, threatening to resume the nuclear program. And that was one of the reasons for conducting the special military operation,” he insisted.

Medvedev also drew a sharp contract between Ukraine and South Africa, the first country with a nuclear arsenal to voluntarily give it up. He noted that after the collapse of the apartheid regime, the nation’s new democratic authorities “took a responsible and sovereign stance towards their people, neighboring countries and the entire world community”.

“And today they do not regret the choice made 30 years ago, they are proud of it and show the way for others by their example,” he added.

Under the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, Ukraine surrendered its Soviet-era nuclear arsenal in exchange for promises from the US, Britain and Russia that they would “provide assistance” to the country in case of aggression. The three states also vowed not to attack Ukraine themselves.

However, Russian officials have repeatedly stated that this document was undermined by NATO’s eastward expansion, which threatened Moscow’s vital security interests. Moreover, prior to the start of the Ukraine conflict in late February, Zelenksy signaled that Kiev could give up its decades-old pledge to be a non-nuclear nation and reverse the decision it took to give up its atomic weapons.

the new 4 Russian regions are now "untouchable", the only question is about the "rump" rest.. so...

civil people suffer, yeah... but the same people remain silence 8 years about Donbas perpetual shelling, about Odessa massacre...
about treating Russian peoples like subhumans, language Verbot! , religion Verbot!, culture Verbot! ring a bell?

Exactly the same was in Nazi Germany about no "Arian" people...and more of the same in " Nazi simpatisante country's...

So Sean Penn gives Zelensky one of his oscar awards 'for the duration of the conflict' and in return receives some recognition in the form of an Order of Merit of the III degree for 'a significant contribution to the war effort''.

This stuff writes itself. Hollywood is even marginally or categorically represented here. It is almost as if they want this to be a three ring circus.

Hands his Oscar over in recognition for Zelenky's acting prowess being the inane puppet for the failing NATO empire captains? We are witnessing absolute lies and deceptive stage-play, what do these people believe in, partying and cocaine snorting?

Russian MoD Announces Troop Withdrawal From Parts of Kherson Region to Left Bank of Dnepr River

Following his appointment as commander of all Russian forces in Ukraine last month, general Sergei Surovikin stated that the situation in the zone of Russia’s special military operation is tense as Ukrainian forces keep making attempts to attack Russian positions.

Sergei Surovikin, the Russian Army general appointed commander of all Russian forces in Ukraine, has delivered a report to Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on the course of the special military operation.
The generalsaid that the situation in the zone of the special military operation has generally stabilized, and the Russian forces managed to fend off Ukrainian attacks in the direction of Krasny Liman and Kupyansk.
Surovikin added that the attempted offensive by the Ukrainian forces on Kherson last night was repelled too. The Ukrainian side is suffering significant losses, he stressed, having lost 9.5 thousand men, both killed and wounded, in the direction of Kherson since August.
Over 115,000 people have already been relocated from the area of hostilities in Kherson, he said.

Kherson region authorities have considered the possibility of Russian troops leaving Kherson city, the capital of the formerly Ukrainian region that joined Russia following a referendum in late September, to relocate to the left bank of the Dnepr River.
The city is located on the western bank of the river, which exposes it to potential Ukrainian attacks, while the eastern side – also known as the left bank – is more defensible, with the river being a giant natural obstacle. The late deputy head of the Kherson Military-Civilian Administration Kirill Stremousov said in early November that Russian troops are “likely” to move to the left bank – mostly in order to make sure that as many civilians as possible are safe. He also repeatedly urged everyone who has not yet left the region to do it as soon as they can.
"I'm always with the people, I understand that people should be the basis [of everything], because I am a Khersonite myself," Stremousov, who died in a road accident earlier on November 9, said.
Last month, General Surovikin described the situation around Kherson as “tense” and warned that the military may be forced to make “difficult decisions.”
Over the past few weeks, Ukrainian forces have repeatedly tried to attack Kherson, but the attempts were repelled. On Tuesday, Ukrainian troops, along with foreign mercenaries, made yet another attempt to launch an offensive on Russian positions in the Kherson region, but the attack was fended off, with the Ukrainian side being forced to retreat after suffering significant losses.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Ukrainian forces failed to gain any advantage in the region, with the Russian troops successfully holding off any attempts to attack or gain new territories. On November 3, reports emerged saying that the Russian flags had been removed from government buildings in Kherson. However, the authorities explained that the government had been moved to a different city.
In October, Russia informed the UN that Ukrainian forces were firing hundreds of missiles daily, mostly from US-made High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), aiming at the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric plant in the Kherson region.
Russian envoy Vasily Nebenzia warned that the destruction of the facility could result in the deaths of thousands of civilians and loss of thousands of homes, but the West chooses to ignore “any criminal acts” committed by the Kiev regime.
The same month, Acting Governor of the Kherson region Vladimir Saldo said that a “difficult, but right” decision had been made to relocate civilians from a number of municipalities from the right to the left bank of the Dnepr River to protect the population.
The caretaker governor explained that there was “an immediate danger of flooding in the territories due to the planned destruction of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric dam” by Ukrainian forces. The measure, he stressed, would help shield civilians from Kiev’s “banned methods of war,” while also helping to better defend the area from a Ukrainian offensive from the north. He elaborated that the Russian forces were setting up fortifications to repel the attack: "Where the military operates, there is no place for civilians.”
President Vladimir Putin, for his part, said earlier in November that relocating civilians from Kherson was a top priority, since Ukrainian forces were continuing to target the bridges crossing the Dnepr River, as well as the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric plant and its dam, threatening large-scale flooding.
The Kherson region officially became part of Russia in early October, together with the liberated areas of the Zaporozhye region and the People’s Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, after the people in those territories overwhelmingly supported the move in referendums.

Russia to pull troops out of frontline city of Kherson – MOD

Russia has decided to withdraw its troops from the right bank of the Dnieper River in Kherson Region, including the regional capital. The Defense Ministry explained that it wants to avoid unnecessary losses among its forces and spare the lives of civilians.

Russia incorporated Kherson Region last month, after residents voted in a referendum to break away from Ukraine and seek accession to Russia. Kiev rejected the vote as a “sham” and pledged to use military force to recapture all territories it considers to be under its sovereignty.

Senior official in Russian frontline region of Kherson dead – press office

The deputy head of the frontline Kherson Region, Kirill Stremousov, has been killed in a car accident, the local press office confirmed to the media on Wednesday. The region’s health minister, Vadim Ilmiev, told the media that Stremousov had been involved in a traffic incident on a road connecting Kherson to the town of Armyansk in northern Crimea.

Stremousov often spoke on behalf of the regional administration, particularly when it came to the situation in the city of Kherson. He gave regular updates on social media and regularly talked to journalists about the region’s affairs. Just this morning, the late official revealed the latest information about the battlefield situation, reporting that Ukrainian attempts to advance in a town some 50km to the north from Kherson had been thwarted by Russian troops.

Russia incorporated Kherson Region last month, after residents there voted in a referendum to break away from Kiev and be accepted into Russia. Kiev dismissed the ballot as a “sham” and continued its military push toward the regional capital.

Kherson is located on the right bank of the Dnieper River and is relatively close to Ukrainian positions. The regional administration urged civilians to leave the city due to the threat from Ukrainian forces and has moved its headquarters to the other side of the river.

Stremousov came to prominence in the national media after earlier having a brush with death. In September, his office in Kherson was hit by a Ukrainian rocket, but he was not there due to a scheduled appearance on a talk show. The blast injured several workers of the administration.

US and Russia to hold nuclear talks – State Department
The meeting will be the first since hostilities broke out in Ukraine

American and Russian diplomats will meet to discuss the New START nuclear arms reduction treaty “in the near future,” US State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters on Tuesday. Earlier, Bloomberg and Kommersant cited sources who said that a meeting of the Bilateral Consultative Commission (BCC) may soon be held in Egypt.

“We have agreed that the BCC will meet in the near future. Under the terms of the New START treaty, the work of the BCC is confidential, but we do hope for a constructive session,” Price said at a press briefing.

The US believes in the “transformative power of diplomacy and dialogue” but is “clear-eyed and realistic” about what it can accomplish when it comes to Russia, Price added. The conversations are “focused on risk-reduction” but Washington wants to ensure that the ability to pass messages back and forth with Moscow “does not atrophy.”

“If there is, and it sounds like there will be, a meeting of the BCC, that is a good thing,” Price added, before correcting himself to say that the meeting will definitely happen.

While Price would not name the venue for the meeting, Bloomberg mentioned Cairo as a neutral location that is more acceptable to Russia than Geneva, since Switzerland has taken part in the US and EU sanctions on Moscow over the Ukraine conflict.

The New START is the last remaining nuclear arms control agreement between the US and Russia, set to expire in 2026 unless renewed. The BCC last met in October 2021.

Moscow suspended the inspection regime under the treaty in August, citing Western sanctions that have prevented Russian inspectors from doing their work in the US, thus putting Washington at an unfair advantage. The Russian Foreign Ministry said the inspections would continue once the principle of parity and equality is restored. Inspections had previously been disrupted by lockdowns in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ukrainian advance towards frontline city has failed – official

Kiev may soon exhaust its offensive capabilities, Kherson's deputy governor has claimed

Ukrainian forces attempting to take the city of Kherson have failed to make further advances, a senior regional official has reported.

The frontline near the city remains “difficult but stable,” Kirill Stremousov, the deputy head of the administration of Kherson Region, stated on Wednesday. In particular, Ukrainian forces “had their ass handed to them” during fighting near the town of Snigiryovka, the official said on social media.

On Tuesday, Stremousov reported intense fighting near the settlement, which is some 50km north of Kherson. Kiev’s troops managed to seize positions to the north of the town alongside a railway, he said.

The Russian official noted that Kiev may soon exhaust its offensive capabilities due to a shortage of manpower. He claimed that the Ukrainian government had to rely on hired foreign fighters in its push toward Kherson and predicted that the funding would dwindle due to an expected power shift in Washington.

He was referring to the midterm elections in the US, in which the Republican Party is predicted to take control of the House. Its leadership expressed skepticism about pouring tens of billions of dollars into Ukraine instead of using the funds to solve domestic problems.

Kherson, which is located on the right bank of the Dnieper River, is the provincial capital of Kherson Region. Russia incorporated it last month after a referendum on the move. Kiev rejected the outcome of what it said was a “sham” ballot.

The regional administration urged civilians to leave Kherson and go to temporary shelters elsewhere in the region and other parts of Russia. The city may suffer serious damage during a likely battle, officials warned.

Russia seized Kherson in the early weeks of the conflict. The Ukrainian government described capturing it as a major military objective.
