Default What are you not doing, that maybe you should be?

    Hey,

I was just inspired by some music and drum videos and realized how long it has been since I have turned up the beats downstairs myself.

I have also neglected to find the time to pull out my acoustic guitar - even after seeing the post/thread about tuning into a different frequency! (sorry, can't remember exactly, but I will come back to that).

My point is - I am sure that I am not alone with this situation during these scamdemic times! I think it would do us all some good to get to some of those things that we have not done recently.

    Painting? Any art at all?

Gardening is a big one with spring trying to show itself. I have some wood prepped for a raised garden bed. (my own list is getting larger lol)

Wood work anyone? Something I have always wanted to dive into but never had the tools. Terrible excuse, I know.

Do what you do! I am posting this to keep myself honest with myself.

    Anyone else?

Very good question. It is also a question that has been asked throughout recorded history.

With your permission, I would like to pose the reciprocal to your very good question: What are you doing, that maybe you should not be doing?

I’ve often thought of the question you raise and it always led me to think of and ponder the opposite. What I should not do.

I’ve come to believe that the list of what I (personally) should not do, is typically shorter than the list of what I should do. Although I am not religious, but I am spiritual, the Ten Commandments sums up pretty well the does and don’ts for getting along on this plane. (Or was it Fifteen Amendments as Mel Brooks joked?)

Much depends on the object of the discussion. That is, what one should or should not do is a function of what one is confronted or involved with, engaged in, focused on etc...

What I’m saying is self evident no doubt. But your post got me thinking along those lines again.

    Much thanks.

What I have not been doing is keeping myself moving more. I have recently changed that, and now, weather permitting I stay outside walking more, working in my flowers, and when you brought up gardening that gave me an idea. I have a stack of old lumber covered and just laying there in the corner of the yard. Think I will get my son in law to make a raised garden bed for me, will be easier for me to grow some veggies in. Now I am inspired.

I have so many interests it’s not funny. I wish I had a she shed! It is hard to start projects because I really need a room where I could keep all my supplies together and not have to put them away. I find that once I clean them up they get put on the back burner.

Right now I am getting the flower beds ready to plant. At the end of May we will put in our vegetable garden. I like to paint, watercolors and oils are my favorite mediums. During the winter I tried my hand at nuno felting and fell in love with the textures and colors. Last fall I dyed the silk used in nuno felting using acid dyes. My man made me a frame to stretch silk scarves and I painted one for my mom. I process and can our harvest from August through October. I like to sew but lately I have just been mending and yes, there is a sewing machine set up on the kitchen table at the moment.

When I was younger I used to have many different projects going on at once. It seems like since Covid all I really do is clean.

You have inspired me to dig out a purse I started to sew before Easter. It was put away when I cleaned for Easter dinner. Thank you for this thread and your inspiration!

    Much Love,
    Julia

PS- I should add that not everything I make turns out. When my grandson was born I made him a fleece teddy bear snow suit for his car seat. Because I had to cut a hole for the seatbelt to go between his legs I reinforced around the cut so it wouldn’t fray. After I did that there was no more room for his little legs! We had a good laugh about that!

Heretogrow, believe this - I had sewing pop into my mind when I was writing that, but I didn't add it!

I guess it's because I didn't need to, that was left for you!

I haven't been half as frantic in my little projects as I used to be. I should have at least two or three more unfinished projects than I do at the moment

Yeeeaah, you've reminded me, I've got a violin I need to get out, and muck about with. I don't like to think of it as bow practice but that's what it is. I'll put some music on like Booka Shade and play along best I can, hit the right note with the right bow expression and its a triumph. I'm a percussion guy at heart, the bow is really hard but that little triumph sometimes when playing along to something, it's a good hit/buzz

Alright, enough of my electric kit - I need a new acoustic drum kit. Electronic cymbals will never cut it. ...and I love working the hi-hat!

My acoustic kit was stolen years back! It's time!

Yesterday was rainy and cold here, so I spent some time working on a quilt that has been in progress for a while. My sewing space is in our unfinished basement, which is not that great, but when I go to that area where I have created jewelry, cards, quilts, masks 😝, and more quilts, I am so aware of the energy that has been created there and I immediately feel peaceful. Good times! 😊

I have so many paper books to read but I spend too much time online, it's a bit addictive though and there's so much interesting news... However I've scolded myself into getting those books read, I keep buying more whenever I go to the car boot sale and see an interesting title for next to nothing!

Paper books are so much easier on the eyes, when helping a friend out with babysitting a couple of years ago I would sit in her lovely garden and read (little one was fast asleep and his window was open so I could hear if he woke up). I would watch planes go overhead, but they always looked a bit blurry whenever I was using my Kindle. When reading a paper book, they were crystal clear.

An email with a free £5 book token from the Caboodle site also popped into my inbox the other day; I fancy another addition to my small Joseph P Farrell collection...

I recently purchased an updated copy of Acid Pro, I make music, use beats and put them to my poetry, do a bit of singing as well. It has been some years, since 2014, since I made a piece, so I've been feeling the urge to do so and to re-open that avenue of expression as I am feeling that all artistic endeavors are needed right now by the global human family and anything that incorporates vibration, sound, vision and feelings that we can contribute can and will help us all in some way, perhaps small, perhaps large, who knows?

Here's the last piece I made, before the world changed.

Very cool stuff Mark! It felt like a benevolent, poetic DMT trip or something. I can't describe it very well but I know I liked it. Thanks for sharing.

One thing I used to do frequently is exchange rhymes with a friend of mine on the west coast, via text. We're both huge hip hop fans.. and although it was sort of unspoken, what we did amounted to what you might call rap battles lol. We were always trying to outdo each other. And it was an awesome creative exercise. He'll still send me one occasionally but I've gotten away from it, and my creativity has suffered for it. I need to start getting back to that.

And also, writing. Or maybe not so much writing but submitting the stuff that I do write. I've always talked myself out of it for one reason or another, but it's mostly insecurity and fear of rejection. So I gotta get a little more courageous in that area

I took some time and watched a bunch of drum videos to try to figure out what drum kit to get. If I had an unlimited budget, this would be easy - DW maple, 7 piece.

Probably gonna go with a mid-range Pearl kit. That way I can get all of the cymbals I want as well.

Now a new challenge - due to the lockdown, the store is not open to allow people inside. I have to make my order over the phone and pick it up at the curb. Now any musician of practically any instrument will tell you how difficult it is to buy something online. Maybe a brand new synth if you were familiar with the exact model you wanted would be ok?

But anything on the acoustic side - yikes...I will find my way through this.

    Highest accolades, man, thanks.

All of my stuff is on the spiritual tip for the most part, there's a lot of it out there on my YT pages. For about a decade or so I was pretty prolific, but when shiza got really real in the world I grounded hard, got married, involved in politics, etc., and my artistic side suffered as a result.

I can't describe it very well but I know I liked it. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for being present to the strangeness. I'm cool with being undefined, I really like how it seems a lot of artforms have become a lot less programmatic and boilerplate in the last 5 years or so as well.

Yes! Absolutely. Would love to see your efforts on that front! They are needed!

And also, writing. Or maybe not so much writing but submitting the stuff that I do write. I've always talked myself out of it for one reason or another, but it's mostly insecurity and fear of rejection. So I gotta get a little more courageous in that area
YOu can let that go easily, just turn it off and send stuff out en masse. You're an awesome writer, I think you'll be surprised at the responses you get.

Very cool stuff, to frame a poem like that Mark/Rahkyt... awesome
Thank you! I think any music I make now will be different from back in the day, it has been so long.

Hey Mark thanks for the kind words! Appreciate it.

What I envy about you is that you have a great voice to go along with your talent. My voice sucks. At least for rapping lol.

Matthew, thanks for the encouragement. I did write something recently, about this kid's fb posts (an old acquaintance) and for the most part the reaction was lukewarm. I'm so neurotic and touchy about stuff i create that the reactions really affect me. It's a terrible, crippling flaw of mine. But i am getting better. At least i showed some people! In the past i wouldn't have been able to do even that

A cool and unique (at least to me) piece of work!
