    Default Antibiotics and me

Hi, Folks: a little journal here of experiences, that some of you might possibly resonate with.

When I was a kid, I lived in Ghana for most of the time till I was 8, when I returned to England to go to school. For three consecutive winters, I had bronchitis for three months at a time. (Ugh!!) I was laced with antibiotics.

Then as a teenager, I had acne, quite badly. Fortunately, it was all on my back (which looked like a battlefield), and not on my face. The treatment then was the antibiotic Oxytetracycline — for years on end. (To this day I cannot understand the rationale.) Eventually, it all disappeared on its own. The antibiotics never made a shred of difference.

Then aged 31, I went on a Himalayan expedition, and thirsty in the hot sun but having used up all my chlorine tablets, I drank from a beautiful, clear high mountain stream confident it had to be pure water. Boy, was I wrong.

Within hours I had a fever, then the next day it was really high, at 104ºF (40ºC). I was slipping in and out of consciousness for 3 days, and the expedition doctor thought he might lose me. He dosed me with massive amounts of Flagyl (Metronidazole). I recovered — or else I'd not be here now! — and when I returned to England I went to my doctor for a checkup.

After a stool test, he prescribed more antibiotics, but instead I went to a Chinese acupuncturist. (The Chinese have been treating dysentery for thousands of years, and know exactly how to do it.) A week later I returned to the doctor for another test, and I was all clear. "Wow, those antibiotics worked really fast", he said. I told him I'd not taken them, and had cleared it with acupuncture.

Rather than being pleased I'd totally recovered, he was really angry with me. (Go figure. )

Four years after that, then aged 35, I realized something was wrong with my system. Serendipitously, I found myself reading an article about Candida, and had a huge emotional reaction that came straight from my body (not my conscious mind). I found an alternative practitioner, and learned I was riddled with Candida. All those antibiotics had wrecked my natural bowel flora.

He put me on a strict zero-sugar diet (no sucrose, fructose, lactose or yeast) — for 18 months, supported by supplements. All I ate was meat, fish, eggs and vegetables for a year and a half. I got the all clear, and celebrated with half a pint of shandy (which is half beer, half lemonade), and nearly passed out. I had to be driven home by a friend.

Since then, I've had the alcohol tolerance of a baby. I get a hangover if the chef in restaurant puts a drop of sherry in the sauce, not a joke. And I've never touched a drop since.

After that, I avoided antibiotics like they were poison. The only other time I took any was in 2004, when I had a urinary tract infection which was painful and not clearing up on its own. I waved the white flag, and took the antibiotics. The infection vanished overnight.

The only other time — till just now. This is the prompt for this thread.

I developed a septic finger, which was swollen, full of green pus (sorry! ), and painful. The fingernail was getting bent out of shape, and it wasn't healing — but it wasn't getting worse. It was like that for a whole month, staying just the same.

Interestingly, spanning that time, I went for a couple of strenuous mountain hikes, both identically the same. The first time was just before my finger got infected, and I felt strong all day. Then when I repeated it a month later, I returned home really tired. (I realized later that my whole system was under stress just because of my finger.)

Then, 5 days ago, I had a download. It was a clear "loud" message, from someone or something. It said: YOU NEED ANTIBIOTICS. IMMEDIATELY.

I recognized the message for what it was, and paid attention. But I didn't know quite what to do, as antibiotics need a prescription here in Ecuador (and I understand why). You can't just get them from a pharmacy over the counter.

Then I had a bright idea, because I was taking Mara (my dog) to the vet for a routine checkup, that very day. After Mara was all fine and done, I asked the vet if he could kindly take a quick look at my finger.

The vet is a gentle, heart-centered man, unflappable and calm under all circumstances. But he looked at my finger and FREAKED OUT. He kept on saying: "This is really really serious. You don't understand. You could lose your whole finger, and it could be even worse than that."

He asked me how long it had been that way. I told him a month, and he freaked out again. He gave me bunch of super-strong antibiotics there and then: Ciprofloxacin.

Grateful, I took one immediately, and then when I got home I told the other mods on our Discord chat what had happened.

Sue, who knows far more about antibiotics than I do, warned me that Ciprofloxacin was infamous for super-nasty side-effects and thousands of lawsuits from injured people. I looked up the side-effects list, and OMG, it was VERY long and scary. (There's an Avalon thread about that, here: Avelox, Cipro, and Levaquin have been named in over 2,000 drug injury lawsuits.)

So I abandoned the Ciprofloxacin immediately, having taken just one, and so it was beck to the drawing board. Then I had another bright idea, to ask the wife of a friend of mine, who's a hospital nurse, if she could help. She replied she could get a prescription for me from one of the hospital doctors at no charge, just as a favor. And when I went to collect that, it was for Cephalexin, a far safer antibiotic.

I've been taking that for a couple of days, and my finger is already 95% back to normal.

So, all an interesting experience. The takeaways, I think, may be these.
    • Antibiotics really can save lives, or limbs. But (a) take the right ones, and (b) not all antibiotics are equally safe.
    • Resort to them very, very sparingly. ONLY when nothing else is working.
    • Too much antibiotic use, even if there are no apparent side-effects, can wreck your natural bowel flora. And those are very important. (When I'm done with my current course, I'll replenish immediately with big doses of bowel flora supplements.)
I'll bet my hat that others reading this have had interesting antibiotic experiences as well... please do share them if you care to.

Thanks Bill. I would also recommend reading “Clean” by Alejandro Junger, and also “Liver Rescue” by Antony William for more information on restoring your natural microflora. An unbalanced gut microflora (caused by excessive antibiotic use) will ultimately lead to chronic and systemic illnesses, so it’s essential to pay attention to your gut health following a course of antibiotics.

I learned this the hard way after having loads of antibiotics in my youth to treat recurring sinusitis and chest infections. It turns out, I had a nutrient imbalance caused by poor diet and antibiotic use, so one was driving the other. It was only when I restored my gut health and eliminated a few foods (dairy, and caffeine predominately), that my sinus trouble disappeared along with asthma and chest infections.

Use antibiotics where needed. But be really careful with them. There are a number of different families of antibiotics, but they all work on the similar principle of targeting biochemical pathways of bacterial cell reproduction. They act indiscriminately upon pathogens (bad bacteria) and beneficial microorganisms (good bacteria) and will usually kill off everything [in the gut] that isn’t resistant to that particular antibiotic.

It’s generally recommended to start with simple “penicillin type” antibiotic especially if you had no antibiotic for long time and unless there is allergy to specific antibiotic,
such as Amoxiclav ( or similar brand names) that is amoxycilin plus potassium clavulanate.

In case of acute sepsis, initial dose to take may be doubled to 1000 mg of antibiotic ( take two capsules) and daily dose can be elevated to 2000 mg ( upto 4000 mg in severe infections).

Azithromycin is also usually available, with or without prescription , acts faster with less side effects.

However: with most antibiotics nowadays they do not work sufficiently in cases of severe infection either because the way they manufacture them or because bacterial resistance.

There may be difference in the antibiotic strength and effectiveness pertaining to manufacturer, ways it has been transported , temperatures and elevation it has been exposed to.

Antibiotic never worked for me above 3000 m/sea level

Any minor infection would either heal itself or something like sore throat would faintly continue, the antibiotic would not be activated by my system.

For antibiotic to work well I feel specific conditions are required, like taking rest and taking care of your liquid intake.

Running around with antibiotic does not really help.

Hope you are getting better soon 🙏🌟🙏

In 1996 I had a stomach ulcer caused by a Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacterial infection.

Prior to getting the treatment I was in bloody agony for some time - I remember being doubled up in the foetal position in the early hours of the morning.

A "triple therapy" treatment consisting of two different types of antibiotic and a so-called "proton pump inhibitor" (Losec) was extremely efficient at eradicating it completely.

I am absolutely fine with modern powerful drugs so long as they're used appropriately. There's a time and place for everything. Right now, this is not the time or place for everyone and his dog to be given a severely under-tested gene therapy treatment.

But it's my own personal opinion that doctors have too often over-prescribed and given in to the demands of the more forceful of patients to administer antibiotics promiscuously, leading to a greater likelihood
    of antibiotic resistance.
This is not a criticism and I'm not blaming doctors in any way.
In many cases the doctor is just too over-worked, tired, harassed, sleep-deprived, rushed and time-pressured to stand up to these people.

Please don't do this again, Bill, walking around like that for a whole month! You might have developed sepsis. So glad your finger is much better now!!

A lot of very interesting information you shared, about acupuncture too!

And speaking of serendipity, I think Candida is something I may need to be looking into properly as well. Had my suspicions before (carb cravings!), but the recommended diet seemed impossible, so I've been cowardly brushing the idea under the carpet for now, though I know I really ought to get that checked out too (it can also be linked to B12 and CFS), and how interesting that today Pam shared that article about Serrapeptase in the context of vaccine damage repair, but apparently it can do so much more (when used with care, as it seems strong stuff!).
I had antibiotics for pseudocroup as a baby, then again for bronchitis at the age of six or seven, and later on a couple of times for water infections and some dental fun stuff, so I do feel I've not done my gut flora many favours, although I do occasionally take probiotics.

Wish I had a more interesting/useful experience to share here.

Colloidal silver of course can be great, and an infected finger may possibly benefit from a soak in hot-ish salt water (or Epsom salt or sodium bicarbonate) to draw out the nasties.

Hope your finger will soon be 100% back to normal!!!!

Edit: Btw, Magnesium Sulphate Paste is a great ointment for drawing out all sorts.

Bill thanks, I identify myself with your post, here is what happen to me, when I was a kid I almost died not once but twice due to pneumonia that followed bronchitis, I also had rheumatism (which results in fever very often) I grew up taking loads of antibiotic medications among other stuffs, penicillin was standard for me, my father even considered to remove my tonsils, great he didn't (I still have them, and they still serve their purpose), I also tried lots of antibiotics and my system became resistant specially about penicillin, but I also went to a Chinese traditional master and in my case, was not acupuncture but some sort of therapy, he gave me some manipulated substance that I do not know the name, but one of its ingredients was fish fat or fish oil, not sure either, I was young, when started the treatment, it was 7 days, 7 drops in a small cup of milk, take 2 times a day (7 in the morning and 7 evening or every 12 hours for seven days) my next winters I didn't get sick anymore, the bronchitis disappeared like magic.

I got severely ill again when I was on my 20's and I had to check myself in the hospital, then I explained my case, that it could be bronchitis (it felt like that, could not breath well), I also told the doc my system was resistant to penicillin and that would not help me, I would need something stronger to treat the possible return of rheumatism or bronchitis or both, then he gave me Benzathine benzylpenicillin (penicilina G benzatina), it was my first time taking it, I slept for like 20 hours I guess and after that I felt much better but a huge pain in my arm, another time it happen again was here in Thailand about 7 or 8 years ago, I took penicilina G again, wife was nurse and she prepared and injected on me, here in Thailand is pretty easy to get whatever medication you need without prescription, even nowadays, all you need is to know a pharmacist, it was about 3 days to get back on track, but it resolved the issue with my body. About 2 years ago I took Amoxicilin for my tonsils and that's it. After all these years I am positive the bronchitis and the rheumatism gonna forever.

I am pretty sure what cured me was the Chinese traditional medicine, I tried many times to look it up to find a name or something, but not a clue, since my parents passed away long time ago I have nobody to ask about it. Today I have sinus issues (but compared to what I used to have it is nothing really) that shows up when I get myself into polluted cities like Bangkok, all it takes is one day, this is killer for me, I have been taking loads of turmeric and it seems to be working nicely, I use the powder in capsules and also in my cooking almost daily (I love Indian food), and every time I have to travel to Bangkok I double the dose.

My opinion about antibiotics is: take it if you need, it won't kill you (test yourself before to learn if you are allergic, this is serious), but don't overuse for many years like many of us did or every time you get sick about something.

Today I make use of lots of herbs, roots, leaves, tea, mushrooms and I avoid at as much as I can overuse medicines from big pharma, but I do have some aspirins, zinc, fish oil and other vitamins, I do prefer to have it from edibles, it is much safer and taste better

I'm glad to hear you're on the mend Bill!

Being sick anywhere is a drag, but up in the mountains like that? The Himalayas? Deathly ill? That must have been extremely frightening. That bit there made quite an impression on me. Wow!

As far as the finger: just curious..how does one develop septic finger? Never heard of that one. But hell, it sounds like murder! It is amazing how an infection in a finger can affect the whole body so profoundly.

Growing up I was frail and asthmatic. And I was allergic to everything. I was one of those kids they shoulda just stuck in a big plastic bubble. I did the allergy shots weekly, pills, inhalers, you name it. So my immune system was a wreck..and consequently I was prone to frequent sinus infections.

But these weren't your average sinus infections. The mucus was like super glue. I would blow my nose, for example, and the mucus would stick to the tissue while still very much connected to my nostrils, and I had to actually pull it out with quite a bit of force. It was painful! It was the mucus from hell.

Being so frail, and having asthma made this kind of dangerous. I had serious bouts of breathlessnes that involved 911 calls and trips to hospital. And the only thing that saved me was antibiotics. I still thank God for those. I probably wouldn't have made it without them. So, not all drugs are bad. We have to be careful about demonizing the whole lot. I feel enormous gratitude for those pills and all the kind doctors that helped me thru those hellish days

So glad to hear you're on the mend Bill. I agree that antibiotics can be life-saving, no doubt about it, but they've been badly misused and have given us the problems of resistance that we see today. I keep chlorine dioxide handy (also known as MMS) and have found it has tackled everything to date. I also keep colloidal silver handy but haven't used that as much, although it's also very good. Antibiotics can apparently wipe out your gut flora for a long time so it's important to repopulate with the good stuff, like you're doing. I had treatments with antibiotics as a teenager, for acne, which I regret now, but didn't know about the dangers at the time, and they were commonly prescribed. Now I understand that the acne may have been caused by my mercury fillings as it has come to light that this can be the cause of acne. Dr. Mercola said when he had his removed, in his youth, his acne cleared up immediately. I eventually had my fillings replaced too, but long after the acne disappeared as I didn't know about it at the time. Another way we get antibiotics is from eating meat, unless it's organically-reared, so it's also something to be aware of.

I had to be driven home by a friend.
    ..
Thank you very much for that.
Hi palehorse your comments about the use of fish oil corroborates what many articles by the Weston A Price Foundation say about the role of fats in gut health:

    How to restore digestive health.

Quote Key to recovery is cod liver oil, which is not only high in special anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids but also fat-soluble vitamins A and D. Both of these nutrients help fight inflammation and build the immune system, so critical to restoring digestive health, especially in persons with inflammatory bowel disease.
Quote candida (yeast), fungi, parasites, viruses and other unfriendly microorganism invasions as a result of damaged digestive terrain. Anti-microbial saturated fats help to combat these; the two best sources are coconut oil and butter from grass-fed dairy cattle. Coconut oil is anti-viral, and contains lauric, capric and caprylic acids–recommended to combat candida.

Grass-fed, organic butter also contains anti-microbial fatty acids including butyric acid, which has strong anti-fungal effects. Coconut oil and butter are not only anti-microbial, but they also help heal the lining of the gut
Much of what they say flies in the face of the diet diktocrats who say we have to avoid saturated animal fats. Their hypothesis put forward by them (and therefore that of the corporate food industry) was that because these fats are solid at room temperature, they must clog up the arteries. Not at all true.

Hope you feeling better Bill/ I have not had many antibiotics, choosing colloidal silver over all to cure my problems. I have used colloidal silver for everything, topical, internal, in mouth for tooth, in ears, in eyes etc. For me , it cures most everything, with no side effects. The body doesnt build an immunity to it as well .

You can buy fishcillin from a pet store or an online pet store. It's identical to people's penicillin. Everyone should have some on hand.

Also, you can get 10-1 concentrate oregano oil capsules that work even better. They're very cheap from swansonvitamins.com.

Maybe a bit off the topic.

Just came to think of that I have the measles 2 ! times as a child. Which is impossible according to medical sciense. Obviously not true.
It was even investigated by my mom's cousin Gudmund Stintzing, who was a pro doctor in that field.

I so rarely get infections, but when I do I take golden seal for three days, max..
The few times that I have had infections in my fingers, from wood slivers doing carpentry, I have increased my intake of Vitamin C, twice a day, 3 to 5 grams each time. The swelling decreases within hours and the infection is gone entirely in 1 to 2 days.

I'm switching to making my own Liposomal Vitamin C with sunflower lecithin in order to remove the acid makeup of most Vitamin C I take, bringing it closer to a neutral ph. Vitamin C in excess restricts the absorption of copper. It's a bit of a conundrum as vitamin C intake has so many advantages in maintaining a healthy system, as I have experienced for decades of being exposed to harsh working and weather conditions.

That and decades of taking powdered turmeric have been very helpful in both maintaining healthy gut bacteria and preventing harmful bacteria.

    Default Re: Antibiotics and me

I had a urinary tract infection about a year ago - it was really bad .. I was peeing blood. As soon as I noticed that it was bad, I started myself on a regimen of garlic and ginger. I mean a lot of garlic and a lot of ginger. I made a very strong ginger / garlic tea and drank that 3-4x a day, and throughout the day just ate several cloves of garlic. So much ginger and garlic until my urine smelled like ginger and garlic. In three days the infection was 50% cleared up, and gone in another 4 days. I'm not saying that's what everyone should do, but that is what I did.

That said, when you need antibiotics, you need them. Natural remedies only work up to a certain point, and even then you have to be very aggressive with them. After that point, this is where antibiotics shine. I had a wicked sinus infection once when I was younger that persisted for weeks, to the point the bones around my eyes started to get infected and swollen ... I finally succumbed, went to the dr. and got my antibiotics. Cleared up the majority of it in literally three days.

The trick is to know exactly when you've reached that point. Good for you Bill for listening to your body. Its usually the best indication, if one can hear their body.

Recovering from a bout of antibiotics though can take weeks, months, and sometime many months, and the chance you will get the exact same unique gut flora you had before the antibiotics is slim to none, so there's chances of long term physiological, and psychological / mood changes that may result as well. Always good to eat foods high in live probiotics (kimchi, sauerkraut, yogurt, cheeses (blue particularly), kefir, kombucha, etc.), or even probiotic supplements, especially to ensure that more nastier species can't settle in while the "subdivision isn't being occupied" so to speak ... from there it takes a little while for everything to balance out again.
When you are one step ahead of the crowd, you are a genius.
Two steps ahead, and you are deemed a crackpot.

Dentists routinely prescribe antibiotics after an extraction, at least the ones I have visited did. I most likely lost my kidneys because of one of those occasions. The doctors didn't know what caused it, and when asking me a lot of questions I noted the significant glance with each other at the mention of them. They also literally used me as a guinea pig with an experimental treatment that could have killed me and perhaps nearly did but that is another story.

My last visit to a dentist, March 2020 in Pha Yao, was for an extraction and, after the event, was prescribed antibiotics. They went in the bin. The dentists rationale was based on open mouth wounds being easily invaded, true, but the mouth also heals faster than most any other area of the body. It was being prescribed 'in case', wrong approach imo. Not one dentist I visited for an extraction ever bothered to tell me that the teeth adjacent to an extracted one will often migrate into the space, becoming looser in doing so. My mouth is a mess.

Here is my humble stack and it contains:

    - omega 3-6-9 (from fresh fish or fish oil capsules);
    - turmeric (from capsules or powder for my sinus problem);
    - ginko biloba or bacopa (good antioxidant - i use sometime one sometimes another);
    - L-Theanine/caffeine (from green tea and coffee which also contains antioxidants);
    - choline (from blue butterfly pea, it is a flower - some locals here use it to reduce fever, it dilate the blood vessels, it also anti-inflamatory and analgesic, it increase choline content in the brain - in India they use it to treat urinary problems in cattle, there is lots of use for it in Asia - I have access to it in a huge wild area close to my home, I just pick as much as I want and boil it to make a tea, the locals do a very good ice tea from it, but i like it hot - the beautiful unique flower grows in the wild);
    - rhizomes like galangal, chinese finger root and ginger are pretty good for the immune system, I ate them very often in salads or soups.
    - garlic and onions/shallots, literally every day.
    - kale (all of them, chinese, vietnamise, thai, they are all good - if you think bananas are good for potassium try kale, there is nothing better out there).

All these stuffs helps the body, improve the immunological system, improve memory, focus, attention and it enhances the neuronal function, I am always changing this stack, adding or removing items in accordance with my needs, it is all natural stuffs and won't hurt.

A friend introduce to me a herb called Ashwaganda years ago, he said it is great to mitigate anxiety, I never found here to buy and the stores I found online were asking a premium for that, then I took poppy seed tea for anxiety and it worked very well and it is common here and cheap, I had insomnia that time due to work stress.

I do not follow strict diets unless really necessary, and this tiny stack I do when I remember, to avoid the psyche-logic effect of believing something is doing good into our bodies when nothing is really happening, I keep myself skeptic until I notice a real effect, then I can tell myself, yeah this thing works for real and take notes, the ones mentioned above works for me.

Along the years I had seen cases that herbs didn't worked out for some people, but in reality one must use in accordance with their own needs, first we have to identify the problem, then mitigate it. For example, I planted Gac Fruit a while ago, I heard it has lots of lycopene, well it took months to grow from seed and when it was finally ripe and ready for eat, I did ate one entire fruit alone (it is a big red blood fruit), the result was bad very bad, I spent the entire day in the toilet! Accidents happen sometimes and I learned my lesson, could be much worse. I will keep eating my tomatoes instead.

I will investigate more about candida, I do not think I have it, but it is a good idea to prevent, and good call to avoid sugars, the industrialized white stuff is real poison.

Is there a thread about Candida on PA?
[EDIT] I found here 6 threads related to candida https://projectavalon.net/forum4/sea...rchid=23702426 and the Turpentine thread is also about Candida.

and thanks @HappyUK I saved the article in PDF, good one.

    Have a good evening everyone.

Someone has mentioned cod liver oil: if it exists in your area, that’s in your store or unless you’re a fisherman I recommend buying some tins of it ( not tons) and eating just about one every week or fortnight ( cod liver in natural oil : go for the best brands even then they’re rarely too costly compared to the price and quantity of oil in capsules).

It helps especially during long cold winters and you will know when you don’t need another one.

    Looks like this: https://www.intrafish.com/processing...gir/2-1-718586(Norwegian)
    or like this:

    https://www.thefishsociety.co.uk/cod-liver.html ( Icelandic)

Of course a fish or two from your own territory may serve you the best but in Bills case, I understand that anything that’s available locally is better than travelling too far.

I remember when Fluoroquinolones were only used as an absolute last resort. Now they are casually prescribed for urinary tract infections which is insane. Cipro has a very real side effect of causing inflammation and tightening and sometimes tearing tendons and ligaments. It's absolutely tragic in what it has done to some folks. Not only can it be extremely painful but it renders some unable to walk or use their joints. One of the big problems with this is that the symptoms may not occur until later until after the person has taken the full dose.

It is so important to do your research on everything if you have to deal with the medical system, and I mean everything.
