More than 400 Belgian troops, backed by German and Dutch special forces, have been combing Hoge Kempen National Park where Conings, 46, was believed to be holed up, using thermal cameras in an effort to locate the experienced soldier.

A raincoat and a camouflage tent were discovered in the 12,000-hectare park on Thursday. Inside the shelter, which was also constructed from branches and plastic tarps, were bottles of water and soda, as well as what appeared to be a cool box.

Authorities have not confirmed that the shelter belonged to Conings, a trained sniper who joined the army in 1992 and has served in Yugoslavia, Lebanon, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Conings was believed to have taken refuge in the park after his car was discovered nearby on Tuesday with the four missile launchers and some ammunition inside. The soldier is also armed with an FN P90 machine gun and a handgun."

Local media reported that Conings had booby-trapped his car, by leaving a grenade inside with a wire linking the munition to the car's doors so it would explode when opened.

Despite the huge police presence and support from Germany and the Netherlands - which border the search area - there was no sign of Conings as of Friday morning.

'The sweep did not lead to the discovery of the wanted person,' federal prosecutor's office spokesperson Wenke Roggen said on Thursday night.

'The search continues now, but I cannot elaborate on that.'

Roggen confirmed that shots had been heard in the national park on Thursday, saying: 'Shots were indeed registered yesterday, but we don't know more about that.'

Conings - who is on a Belgian terror watch list and has been dubbed 'Rambo' by local media - has been described as 'an acute threat', with the public warned not to approach him but to notify police if he is sighted.

Authorities were alerted after his girlfriend Gwendy, 46, discovered several letters left by Conings, including one to his family saying that he 'could no longer live in a society where politicians and virologists have taken everything away from us.'

He also warned that he 'would join the resistance and would not surrender'.

Conings threatened several figures in the letters including Van Ranst, though it may not have been the first time he has made threats against the virologist.

Last year, Conings was put on desk duty after reportedly tweeting: 'Who has Van Ranst's address?' "

normally i would have posted this in Breaking News .. however, this story WILL be continuing ... there is too much attention and man power for one man

if this event was intended to villify those who seek freedom from oppression it is not quite working out that way in the court of public opinion ...

there is talk this was intended to dissuade the growing mass unrest. it is NOT playing out quite as expected or presented, however, as he is gaining MASS approval and following much to the chagrin of authorities and spin master's who are not happy about this turn of events

It seems odd he would leave the missile launchers in his vehicle then booby-trap his car. Maybe it was too much to carry. The guy has been in the Army since 1992 and may suffer from PTSD.

On the whole people today (and I'm one) are very insular and don't just take to the streets.
We have been pacified and disconnected from the real world.

I hope this guy succeeds in all that he can accomplish and that many more will flank these foolish militia and take them out. Ever wonder why after do many years of serving he remains as a corporal (lowest rank possible) though his ability to outsmart all of them is Admiral-grade? VERY FEW are praying that he will be stopped, the carnage are the WORLDWIDE casualties of this EASILY preventable and treated disease i ALREADY had with the ONLY personal adverse effect being the loss of a thriving VERY successful business AND on a larger scale the WORLDWIDE economy, fear, vaccinated people with NO idea as to the repercussions that are either possible and probable as a result of being genetically altered ~ a point i understand has NO return

'That's not my Jurgen,' she told Algemeen Dagblad. 'I don't know him like that at all. As far as I know, he had no extremist thoughts. And as far as I know he never threatened Marc Van Ranst.'

She added that he would occasionally swear at the television because of the Covid lockdown rules.

'But aren't there a lot of people who swear at that, who are all sick of it? Hand on heart: I have never heard anything about death threats,' Gwendy added.


Shots were heard last night as teams of heavily-armed officers entered the national park with armoured cars and helicopters on standby.

This followed the discovery nearby on Tuesday night of Conings' vehicle. The four missile launchers were inside, along with some munitions but Conings is also armed with an FN P90 machine gun and a handgun. However, local media reported that Conings had booby-trapped his car, by leaving a grenade inside with a wire linking the munition to the car's doors so it would explode when opened.

Van Ranst, who has proposed many of the social distancing measures adopted in Belgium, has been speaking out since the manhunt began and condemning social media 'trolls' making threats against him.

The virologist said that 'being against COVID measures and COVID vaccines all too often coincides with aggression of violence and raw racism. Let one thing be clear: such threats do not make the slightest impression on me.'

Mosques in Dilsen, Bilzen, Lommel and Hulst remained closed on Thursday over fears they could become targets. Local media reported that several had been visited by police and advised of the threat. Some mosques have remained open, albeit with tightened security.

Among the people Conings has threatened is Van Ranst. The leading virologist is an active social media user and his views have made him a target of conspiracy theorists, Covid-sceptics and with the Flemish far-right.

He addresses political and societal issues and faced heavy criticism from the Jewish community in Belgium and elsewhere for accusing Israel of committing a 'Gazacaust' during the 2014 Gaza War.

In 2018, he got into a prolonged Twitter feud with Flemish nationalist MP Theo Francken, who nicknamed Van Ranst 'Dr Hate'.

In an interview with AFP in September, Van Ranst said he had fallen foul of the nationalists and received death threats after speaking out against racism and xenophobia.

'I couldn't stay silent about that and the right-wing parties hate me,' he said.

Already living under police protection, he and his family have been moved to a place of safety."

It’s unlikely that the soldier would have been able to access the weapons on his own. He would have had had help in accessing them.

As a former reservist in the Canadian Army, I know that all personal-issue weapons are kept under tight security. Special weapons like rocket launchers are kept under even tighter security. Access to all such weapons happens under tightly controlled conditions, too. An individual soldier can’t just walk up to a weapons lock-up and take whatever weapons he wants anytime he wants.

It seems a tad too convenient that the authorities would have so easily found the rocket launchers and other munitions. Either that part was staged, or the loss of the rocket launchers was almost immediately detected and the cops knew right away who took them and where they could find them.

A special forces soldier who decides to hide out in a small forest with the idea of trying to evade over 250 soldiers and cops is not a very good soldier. It’s basically the equivalent of saying, “Here I am. Come and get me.” But it makes for a pretty splashy story in the news media.

The FN P90 he’s carrying isn’t a submachine gun, as indicated in the news article. It’s actually a PDW, or personal defence weapon, carried by cooks, clerks, armoured vehicle crews and others needing a compact weapon for self-defence in close-quarter battle situations. While it can function as a SMG, it has greater capabilities.

The 5.7mm round it uses can penetrate most forms of body armour. While it can kill, it’s more likely to wound and thus afford rear-echelon troops an opportunity to escape a situation. The P90 also has select-fire capability, meaning it can be set to full-auto or semi-automatic with the flick of a switch.

A battle rifle with some reach it’s not. It’s a poor weapon to make a last stand with.

I predict this guy will likely be arrested without incident. If a firefight does erupt, he might take out or seriously wound a couple of soldiers or cops, but he’ll end up dead in the end.

i haven't seen it myself, but apparently support groups sprang up in many and multiple social media sites. i understand that many were also taken down.

it is going to take much more than that to stop a movement birthed in the heart of ALL who want freedom from oppression ... they pushed too far ... and now best brace for the pushback .... i feel it coming ... and that can only be good!
