Default Have you found parts of Project Avalon copied elsewhere?

Maybe a year or so ago I found some of my material copied by what appear to be spam sites.

What is rather more odd is that now I have found it published on a site that I was already using as a resource. It is "attributed", at least in the sense that it links to the post, but, given the volume, it greatly exceeds what anyone would consider "fair use" terms.

I am not sure that I care, other than it is "notes not intended as a published format".

    Just seemed a bit surreal...

It does say at the bottom of this page:

which I think is quite lovely! (What about comments after 2016 ??? )

On the other hand, many of us (including yours truly) have posted things from other authors, other websites, etc. possibly in violation of copyright laws, so I am not going to be the first one to point the finger.

Not a violation of copyright if you give attribution, ie, credit, and it is “fair use”. Also not a violation if the material is no longer protected by copyright. Generally, any material printed before 1925 (I think that is the date. Doing this from memory.) is not protected. Some material after 1925 is not protected but that is a more complex analysis. The 1925 date moves as time passes. E.g, 1926, 1927 ..... Also, sometimes the author expressly waives copyright.

Ha. Yes, we've tried to amend that, but the '2016' is buried deeply in the code and we can't [yet] find where it is.

It reminds me of my underwater photography days. We would post on many public forums, and sometimes found our work replicated in the most unusual of places. One fellow uw photographer walked into a corner store to find his photographs gracing a set of gift cards! Many uw photogs are very protective of their images which have taken them immense time, effort, skills and finances, to obtain.

On another occasion my wife lifted an image from the web of a local site, and found out a few days later that she was sent notification from the owner of said image that she was breaking the law by using his image without permission, and that she was told to remove the image immediately and pay a reparative fine, or she would be prosecuted!

I feel this is a part of a far greater picture, one of who owns what on the internet, and how it can be policed. I believe that this is a fundamental illustration of how the global community is based upon greed and service to self. In an ideal world, we would not be driven by greed, finances, dissension, distrust and ownership, and all text and images would be shared freely. There would be no malice, and hence no need to hold and restrict usage of images, text and other content. I believe this will happen in our lifetimes.

If you can't find a match for literal "2016" I wonder if it's a +6 somewhere? Thinking aloud

These are very interesting times indeed...

The internet makes everything available at the touch of a finger, ideas exchanged freely, information, etc. I suppose the only way one can guarantee that their personal information, or their material is not shared freely anymore would be to just keep it to yourselves. Or put it in a copyrighted book. But even then things can easily be photographed again, and reshared.

So the conversation becomes, do we want to use the internet as a vast wealth of free information to be shared among the masses, or are we going to force countless lawsuits to it's use? While I understand it would take away from the funding required to capture such things, there still remains those that will pay for quality artwork, and there is watermarks that can be placed upon images...

I have seen some beautiful artwork online, and personally I do pay to see it, to my internet provider. Of course the funds never make it to the artists whose images grace my screen, but I believe the internet itself was meant to be a way to share the beauty of the world and information freely. And while the larger corporations will litigate and censor, this is really a good topic to discuss.

Because it can change how humanity looks at the exchange of things. As either monetary or free. Truth be told I believe this issue is much larger than credit to who posted what, and where. It touches on how we wish to progress. As AI advances, and technology improves, will we have to pay to grow? Or will we become a society that shares knowledge that everyone can benefit from.

It is a much larger question. Soon jobs will be autonomous, so this raises the question, will those who do not have the money to start an autonomous business die off for the inability to pay for food? There will have to be a massive shift in this world. And we are all going to have to get over the "It's Mine" mentality, and adopt the mentality that "It's ours"...

Interesting times indeed. Hopefully during these growing pains we will all come together. It's funny how technology may be the thing that does it. And sad at the same time. As truly we should be living as one.. But that's just my opinion.

We have been groomed to believe we must have some trait that others do not have that makes us viable. Yet few have the ability to really dabble in everything until they find their true calling, and end up punching a time clock in a miserable job. We are being taught something we learned as children and forgot with industrialization. How to share. What a concept...

I don't think it's greed to be rewarded for your creative endeavours; as you said with underwater photography, it takes a lot of time, effort and money. There is too much copyright infringement; with a lot of people who write or create visual art, that is their only income and if it gets much worse they will probably give up and get a 'proper' job. In addition to the many hours of researching, writing and presenting for publication it doesn't end there, as it is then a constant effort and expense to market your work in order to get sales.

Unless artists and writers are rewarded fairly, there can be no utopian free sharing of creative endeavour. How would you like it if you spent a lot of time and money growing fruit to sell in a market in order to survive, and your customers insisted on taking it away for free? There's no difference.

    Brigantia-

I recognize that it takes money for the equipment, travels, even the training to properly use the equipment. Then to produce it, and such... I completely agree... They should be compensated for such work... I do not agree that these people are being greedy, they worked hard for their efforts..

In the world we live in today, this is theft. I agree with you on that. Which is why we must figure out a way to adjust the way we do things and people get compensated.

It is something to ponder, for sure.
It involves our entire money/payment/ownership/creativity mindset, and how it stands now vs. how it could evolve.

I once wrote a series of small inspirational poems in an alpha state, and submitted them to an outfit calling for poetry for plaques and cards with great promises. I was conditionally rejected for now, they said, but later found my verses for sale in Hallmark stores on plaques, so I have pondered this concept over the years myself.

Decided to let it go... if the verses gave folks pause for thought or some uplift, they were simply seeds like everything else.

That's terrible Sue, I am sorry that happened. But you're right, it was the message in your case...

    This also happened to me...

I once built a display for a cosmetics manufacturer. We were given bonuses if we submitted the images. So we were encouraged to be creative. I made a huge display, and wrote a phrase atop it (And I still have the photo), and the next season, they brand labeled their entire line of that collection, the name I used... No joke. I can prove I created the logo, and when I did it, as the prior seasons merchandise was on display...

I too, gave up and left it alone. Because I realized that they gave bonuses not for the display, but they were instead crowd sourcing for advertising ideas... Taken from our ideas to promote their line in the photos we submitted. There was no way I was going to be compensated for my idea, and I am sure they made a lot of money on it, given the amount of advertising dollars they spent the next season to promote my header. They spent millions to promote that season, and we sold a ton of their products, so it was nice to see my idea really boosted sales. And I got to see it firsthand. My logo on all of their advertising. But it sure shocked me.

So this is a worthy conversation. My income depended on my creativity, I created that logo so our store would sell a lot of that product. By accepting their bonus and submitting a photo of my display, they claimed they now owned that property, or rights to it. Even though they had ever used that logo before. It's a sad state of affairs, never once did I think that they were farming us for their own marketing ideas.

But it happens all the time. And the big guys know best, how to do it legally. I think in the end I did receive $500 for winning their display contest, but the amount of money they made then using that? I couldn't even imagine.

For fun I just looked up that logo, and have discovered that the same company now has a spin off of my logo that they're still using! Perhaps I should have kept that logo to myself because I created it nearly 15 years ago! (Hint) they are using X GURLS... as the spin off...

A friend of mine used to go to Starbucks before work every day. He told the girl his name was Marc with a C. On the cup she wrote Cark. He told us all about it at the office and took a picture and posted it on his FB. A month later, I saw the picture on Daily Mail (UK news outlet). One month! Shows you how quickly stuff gets around.

I found very few articles by Bill Ryan translated into portuguese but I also found Corey Goode´s material in the same website translated into portuguese.

I like the approach of "kopimi" license, if the material is already published on a public domain. Once you publish it you are asking for copy. But yeah, giving the due rights no doubts about that. I usually go along with the CC License (https://creativecommons.org/about/cclicenses/) sounds pretty fair to me.

A good way to have sure you keep your rights of your work, is publishing it somewhere public before you spread it to the large audience, the practice is very common in open source software community on Github where copies are called "forks".

You can see where it goes (I am no follower of this crap, just pointing out how it can become an obsession)
"Kopimism is defined as a philosophical belief that all information ought to be freely distributed and that no monopoly on knowledge should ever persist, especially not by the means of state regulation ? by copyright laws, intellectual property regulation, or otherwise. The movement is an outflowing of the Free Culture Movement, and exists largely as an internet phenomenon and is closely related to the Swedish political party: The Pirate Party. However, the ideology has been officially recognized in Sweden as a religion, though it lacks any deities and features no theological dogmas."

My friend had a sports memorabilia business and I used to help him with signings occasionally. It was cool. I got to meet a bunch of famous athletes. One of those athletes was Buffalo Bills star linebacker Takeo Spikes.

In those days the athletes had a habit of signing their name right on top of their picture, which reduced value. We preferred they sign their name off to the side a little, if possible. Takeo's picture featured him in the foreground and a large grassy football field behind him. So before he started we asked him to sign in the grass.

When we returned to his hotel room several hours later, he had signed all 200 pictures the same way: "Takeo Spikes in the grass".
