Let me go back even further , before most people even had TV's

"The Clitheroe Kid was a BBC Radio comedy show featuring diminutive Northern comic Jimmy Clitheroe in the role of a cheeky schoolboy, who lived with his family at Lilac Avenue in an unnamed town in the North of England. The pilot show, pilot series, and 16 subsequent series, totalling 290 episodes in all, were originally broadcast between April 1957 and August 1972..."

What a timely thread - the original 1949 film of Whisky Galore was on TV yesterday.

It's based on the true story of the ship SS Politician that ran aground off the Scottish island of Eriskay in 1941 with a cargo of whisky, which was a rare commodity in wartime Britain. A good quantity of bottles were 'salvaged' by the islanders.

I love this film. Classic line - "How am I supposed to tell the Colonel that my second-in-command has been locked in his room by his mother?"

Strangely I have never even heard of Dave Allen, but he's funny. A lot of good stuff you've been posting here on this thread that I've not seen, so thank you.

This gem from the Life of Brian. Even today, Python sits at the pinnacle of our British comedy.

For context, 1st century Jerusalem. Brian has been arrested on charges of rebellion and subversion and brought before Pontius Pilate for judgement. What obviously makes the scene is that Pilate is parodied here with an unfortunate speech impediment, brilliantly executed by Michael Palin.

From Monty Python's The Life of Brian (1979)

You could almost randomly select any 5 minute segment of that film and have a superb hilarious clip. Same of the Holy Grail.

Here's three classic Python sketches, starting most appropriately with the Olympics.
