In this new video, Alexander Mercouris discusses the clear statements made by globaltimes.cn (the formal English-language mouthpiece of the CCP) that the new military exercises that China has launched are specifically to prepare for
    • A blockade of Taiwan
    • A no-fly zone
    • A military land invasion.

Here's the Global Times piece, which is quite some article. It was published just a few hours ago.
PLA drills around Taiwan continue to 'rehearse reunification operation' after Pelosi's visit, 'exercises blockading island to become routine'

Joint military exercises around the island of Taiwan by the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) continued Wednesday with a joint blockade, sea assault and land and air combat trainings, involving the use of advanced weapons including J-20 stealth fighter jets and DF-17 hypersonic missiles after the drills started on Tuesday evening, when US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi landed on the island which seriously violates China's sovereignty.

The exercises are unprecedented as the PLA conventional missiles are expected to fly over the island of Taiwan for the first time, the PLA forces will enter area within 12 nautical miles of the island and that the so-called median line will cease to exist, experts said, noting that by surrounding Taiwan entirely, the PLA is completely blockading the island demonstrating the Chinese mainland's absolute control over the Taiwan question.

The PLA Eastern Theater Command on Wednesday organized its affiliated Navy, Air Force, Rocket Force, Strategic Support Force and Joint Logistic Support Force and conducted realistic combat-oriented joint exercises in the sea and air space to the north, southwest and southeast of the island of Taiwan, the PLA Eastern Theater Command said in a press release on the day.

Joint blockade, sea assault, land attack and air combat drills were at the core of the operation, as the exercises tested the troops' joint operational capabilities, said the press release.

The J-20 stealth fighter jet, H-6K bomber, J-11 fighter jet, Type 052D destroyer, Type 056A corvette and DF-11 short-range ballistic missile are among the weapons used in the drills, as shown in the photos attached to the press release.

Early warning aircraft and DF-17 hypersonic missiles also joined the exercises, according to a report by China Central Television.

Wednesday's drills came after the PLA Eastern Theater Command started joint military operations around the island of Taiwan on Tuesday evening, involving joint maritime and air exercises in the sea and in the air space to the north, southwest and southeast of the island of Taiwan, long-range live-fire shooting in the Taiwan Straits, and conventional missile test launches to the east of the island of Taiwan.

The PLA will also conduct important military exercises and training activities including live-fire drills in six large maritime areas and their air space surrounding the island of Taiwan, in its north, northeast, east, south, southwest and northwest, from Thursday noon to Sunday noon, the Xinhua News Agency reported on Tuesday evening.

    Unprecedented actions

This is the first time the PLA will launch live long-range artillery across the Taiwan Straits, in a move that will demonstrate the PLA's firm will and strong capability to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and thwart secessionist attempts by "Taiwan independence" and external interfering forces, Zhang Junshe, a senior research fellow at the Naval Research Academy of the PLA, told the Global Times on Wednesday.

"If the conventional missiles of the PLA were to be launched from the mainland toward the west of Taiwan and hit targets to its east, this means that the missiles would fly over the island, which is unprecedented," Chinese mainland military expert Zhang Xuefeng told the Global Times.

He also pointed out that five of the drill zones are set to the east of the so-called median line of the Taiwan Straits, and this means that the existence of the line is denied through the concrete action of the PLA.

Some drill zones are also for the first time set to include areas within 12 nautical miles to the island of Taiwan, but since Taiwan is a part of China, Taiwan's so-called territorial sea is also China's territorial sea, Zhang Xuefeng said.

Also, the PLA drills surrounding Taiwan are intended to show that it is capable of blockading the entire island and of resolving the Taiwan question through non-peaceful ways, if the situation becomes irretrievable, observers said.

From the designated PLA military drills area, the operations could pose a threat to major ports and shipping lanes in Taiwan, forming a complete blockage. This blockage style could be one of the action plans taken in the future for achieving the reunification by force, Herman Shuai, a retired Taiwan lieutenant general, told the Global Times on Wednesday.

Two northern exercise areas designated by the PLA are located off the coast of Keelung Port and Taipei Port, the central exercise area is located off the Taichung Port, the southern exercise area is located off the Kaohsiung Port and the eastern one is located off the Hualien Port. The exercise areas are a "template" for "locking down Taiwan," Shuai said. "If the PLA exercises take a long time, it will constitute a substantial blockage of Taiwan."

The PLA' s drills this time are "comprehensive and highly targeted," showing the determination of resolving Taiwan question once and for all, Chinese mainland military expert Song Zhongping told the Global Times on Wednesday.

The drill should be viewed as a war plan rehearsal, Song said, "In the event of a future military conflict, it is likely that the operational plans currently being rehearsed will be directly translated into combat operations."

"It means that our battle plan has been made clear to the US and the Taiwan authorities, and we are confident enough to inform them of the consequences of further provocation in this way," Song said.

Comparing to the Taiwan Straits crisis in 1996, the PLA's military strength has been greatly enhanced, analysts say.

"In 1996, we didn't have aircraft carriers, the Type 055 large destroyer, nor hypersonic missiles... Since then our ability to strike, capture and kill has greatly improved and our military options and confidence have increased," Song said.

Shuai believes that in 1996, Taiwan's self-defense capabilities were relatively strong, the PLA's projection capabilities were still insufficient, and the number of amphibious warfare ship was limited. Also the PLA's Navy Marine Corps as well as Air Force did not have absolute advantages.

Therefore, at that time, the PLA did not have the capability of completely blocking the island. It only used the method of test-launching missiles to send warnings, but it did not pose any threat to the open seas of Taitung and Hualien, not to mention to US aircraft carriers, Shuai said. "But it is different now. After so many years of rapid development, the PLA, whether it is with the Type 055 large destroyer, aircraft carriers or amphibious landing ship, now fully possesses the strength to blockade the Taiwan Island."

Not intercepting Pelosi's flight does not mean a failure of the PLA. On the contrary, the Chinese mainland chose to avoid an incident that could trigger a World War III but instead to take Pelosi's Taiwan visit as a chance to push forward the progress of reunification, starting with the island-blockading, combat-rehearsing drills that could become routine, analysts said.

Mainland authorities announced on Wednesday that a number of diehard "Taiwan secessionists", two funds and multiple companies related to secessionist activities will be punished in accordance with the law.

Zhang Hua, an associate research fellow at the Institute of Taiwan Studies, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times on Wednesday that the law on punishing Taiwan secessionists is complete and in place in the mainland.

Taiwan secessionists can be judged according to Criminal Law for splitting the country, destroying the reunification of the motherland and endangering national security, the expert said.

Zhang Wensheng, deputy dean of the Taiwan Research Institute at Xiamen University, told the Global Times on Wednesday that after the reunification, the Chinese mainland can collect evidence against Taiwan secessionists in accordance with criminal law, set up special courts to try them in absentia, and nail all those at large wherever they are.

In addition, the scope of sanctions can be extended to the family members of Taiwan secessionists, which means they'll be banned from business exchanges with the mainland and the institutions they work for should also be included in the sanctions list, Zhang said.

Mainland experts said that it cannot be ruled out that more regulations against Taiwan secessionists will be adopted in the future. Considering that the Anti-Secession Law is more of a framework and principle law, the central government could formulate a specific law targeting Taiwan secessionists, similar to the national security law for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

A summary from The Moon of Alabama, just published:
    How Pelosi's Visit Hurts Taiwan

When Nancy Pelosi made her 'woke' flight to Taiwan the U.S. seemed to hope for a Chinese military reaction to it. It positioned an aircraft carrier and two amphibious landing ships in the region. It also shipped additional fighter planes to Japan and South Korea.

Chinese and international commentators drew up potential scenarios for a clash like a forced diversion of Pelosi's plane. However, the Chinese government kept its calm. The reintegration of Taiwan into China is not an urgent matter. It had planned for longer term measures designed to press the pro-independence government in Taiwan into obedience.

Chinese military exercises will now be held around the island without regard for what Taipei claims as its borders. These missile launches, sea and air maneuvers will not be threatening enough to cause a dangerous military confrontation. But they will be repeated over the next years and will steadily move closer and closer to Taiwan's coast.

bigger The median line between China and Taiwan, never officially recognized but adhered to, will now be ignored.

China essentially decided to boil the proverbial frog of Taiwanese independence by slowly, slowly increasing the pressure:
China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is closing off six areas around Taiwan from Thursday to Sunday and is expected to hold drills, including live-fire exercises, in some areas within 12 miles of the island.
The drills are expected to be bigger than the missile tests China launched during the Third Taiwan Strait Crisis that was sparked in 1995 by the US granting a visa to former Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui.
Both Chinese and American analysts believe that the unprecedented military exercises could become routine, a consequence of Pelosi’s provocative visit.
Taiwan depends on sea trade. The Chinese military maneuvers will essentially block it for the next few days. It is demonstration of what might come should China get really serious.

This military posturing will be aided by selected economic sanctions designed to remove the support for Taiwan's current pro-independence government:
China also imposed sanctions on Taiwan because of Pelosi, including a ban on the export of natural sand, and a halt on imports of fish and fruit products from the island.
A ban on the export of natural sand, 90% of which Taiwan imports from China, may sound harmless. But if you live on a rock in an area prone to earthquakes you may want to build your high rises with concrete. No sand no concrete. Building costs in Taiwan will rise and the government will be blamed for it.

Taiwan's soft power will also be curbed:
The authorities will take punitive measures against the "Taiwan Foundation for Democracy" (TFD) and the "International Cooperation and Development Fund" (ICDF), two organizations that have close ties with diehard secessionists, said Ma Xiaoguang, a spokesperson of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council.
Enterprises that have donated to the two funds, such as Speedtech Energy, Hyweb Technology, Skyla Corporation, Skyeyes GPS Technology, are to be prohibited from conducting any transactions or cooperation with mainland organizations, enterprises and individuals. The persons responsible for these enterprises are banned from entering the mainland.
The people of Taiwan did not support Pelosi's grand standing:
News sites ran polls, with almost two-thirds of UDN’s respondents saying the visit was destabilising. Talk radio discussed preparation and escape plans, and walked listeners through their growing anxieties.
That wasn't helped by Pelosi's tone deafness:
At a news conference with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen on Wednesday, Pelosi was asked what she could offer Taiwan to offset the possible costs the island would incur — including economic retaliation from China — as a consequence of her visit. She answered that her visit was part of a broader U.S. effort to have “better economic exchanges” with Taiwan, and she said “significant” Taiwanese businesses are already planning to invest in manufacturing in the United States.”
"You will get sanctioned while we will steal your prime advantage in chip manufacturing," is not exactly an uplifting message.

Other countries which Pelosi also visited felt sidelined by her anti-China antics:
Ms. Pelosi’s visit may also damage a push by the White House to shore up support against China from key allies in the region who analysts say have felt sidelined by the trip, and frustrated by the spiraling tensions. With much recent attention eaten up by China’s fulminations over the visit, allies suggested that they wish they had been better consulted ahead of Ms. Pelosi’s journey.
South Korea, where a recent economic imbalance and trade deficit has raised concerns, snubbed Pelosi:
President Yoon Suk-yeol plans to speak by phone with visiting U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi later Thursday, his office said, after officials said earlier that a meeting between the two is not planned as Yoon is on summer vacation.
    Pelosi wasn't amused:
Korea Pro @southkoreapro - 2:00 UTC · Aug 4, 2022 Yoon administration and the ROK National Assembly did not send any delegation to welcome Pelosi’s arrival last night. Pelosi was not pleased about the situation, multiple reports said.
All together Pelosi's trip was not the success she may have thought it would be. It was a trap she had set for herself when it first 'leaked' that she would visit Taiwan. If she had not gone the Republicans would have blasted her as a coward. Now she will carry the responsibility for further deteriorating U.S. relations with China.

Taiwan, which all the brouhaha is allegedly about, will further lose in its economic relations with China and will wither away as an economic power.

Eventually the people of Taiwan will vote for another party and unification will again come into sight.

A fun commentary about this situation from The Saker:
Nancy braves the Chinese dragon and wins?

So, it appears that Pelosi landed in Taiwan. This is a HUGE victory for the invincible USA and China with all its hollow threats has now lost face. That is how those evil commies are – they only understand the language of force, and when faced with the united forces of democracy they cave.

    Right?
    Right?!
    Well……

Most US Americans have absolutely no idea how offensive their condescending arrogance, constant flag waving, talks about their messianic mission for mankind and general narcissism is offensive to the rest of the planet.
also, Bill i have to tell you .. i'm SO glad that i checked to see that you simply copied and pasted to relay information and that those were NOT your words or thoughts

everyone knows i tend to communicate my thoughts AS they occur

when i pause to consider (which i did out of respect for you)

... it is like when i go silent and turn to look directly at someone

things don't go well from that point .. because NOW? TRUTH is about to be told

and the thing about TRUTH? (as i have a few decades of experience with it)

is that MOST people don't tell it

i, however, was blessed with a particular talent that manages to get it to surface

BECAUSE there is nothing like TRUTH to "trigger" people

and when people get triggered? the TRUTH DOES come out

i don't WANT to play the game: (opted out of)

where everyone agrees to go along

with what they KNOW damned well

i want to just ask them what are we? in REAL life? or an endless loop of pretense?

so ... i will just post what i submitted to the author of the article you posted:

"sitting well with others" is NOT my goal

    though we ALL know better

it is an outright COERCION demanding that ALL of us "play along"

    there is NOT now

    a Pelosi (Biden) VS China

she should stick to writing on topics she is educated with facts

because an opinion based on gross misrepresentations and inaccuracies?

    deserves a place in FICTION

    NOT consideration

except BY those that STILL lap up the lies offered daily by MSM

so .. didn't give her much time, she didn't merit it

Official Leading Missile Production Found Dead In Hotel

The deputy head of Taiwan defense ministry's research and development unit was found dead on Saturday morning in a hotel room, according to the official Central News Agency.

Ou Yang Li-hsing, deputy head of the military-owned National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology, was found dead in a hotel room in southern Taiwan on Saturday morning, CNA reported.

It said authorities were looking into the cause of death. Ou Yang was on a business trip to the southern county of Pingtung, CNA said, adding that he had assumed the post early this year to supervise various missile production projects.

The military-owned body is working to more than double its yearly missile production capacity to close to 500 this year, as the island boosts its combat power amid what it sees as China's growing military threat.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A top military official overseeing Taiwan's missile production has died from a heart attack in southern Taiwan during a business trip.

Serving as the deputy to the president of the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) since March, Ouyang Li-hsing (歐陽力行) was responsible for supervising the manufacturing of all types of missiles.

The 57-year-old military professional fell ill and was discovered by his aide at a hotel in Pingtung on Saturday morning (Aug. 6) after a no-show for a cultural event. Surveillance video from the hotel shows Ouyang had been alone since checking-in the preceding evening, LTN reported.

A family member told police that Ouyang had a history of chronic coronary artery disease. A local top health official pronounced him dead, citing a heart attack as the cause.

Ouyang obtained a doctoral degree in fluid mechanics from the University of Washington. He held managerial roles at Air Defense Missile Command and the Armaments Bureau, and Ministry of National Defense. He served as president of the Management College, National Defense University, and was hailed for his expertise in optoelectronics.

Twice throughout the first 45 minutes of this video he uses the phrase "responsible educated mature adults" which as he accurately points out is in next to no supply on the Hill.

it is that we remain unconcerned

    because we are cognizant

    it is NOT OUR issue"

    Well..

"The Maffia boss running our neighbourhood is fond of killing people in the other neighbourhood.

Occasionally I get a dirty look from people living in other neighbourhoods:

“Oh, you live there, where that Maffia murderer runs the show!”

Listen, it is not of my concern.

Our Maffia boss regularly hosts free pizza evenings

    and I LOVE those pizzas."
maye it was a translation or language issue? but allow me to clarify:

there IS a difference in NOT caring .. lack of compassion > INDIFFERENCE

something, no pisces i know of is either capable nor guilty of

    i am a PISCES

i WISH TO GOD i could NOT CARE about MANY things ...

you gave an example of INDIFFERENCE ..

( i would have already tried to get the town to imprison him or be in jail myself for having snuck in to try to terminate his reign of terror while he slept!)

    ***************

what I was talking about, was NOT INDIFFERENCE, but ISSUES

the ISSUES others have? are unresolved wounds

insecurities they carry because they have NOT taken the responsibility or made the effort to do inner healing that is available to ALL of us

and EVERYONE is guilty of that .. hell, i'm about to give up since i've been at it for a few decades now ... i must have REALLY needed a LOT or i don't know what to think because there is no end in sight

and YET? i continue to try to improve and heal a little more ..

and healing is NOT possible whille swimming in deception or delusion

until you're willing to be COMPLETELY honest, to face the TRUTH

TRUTH tends to trigger a reaction in people. i'm keenly aware of how this works and could write a manual ..

so i AM AWARE that when people start brandying around terms like "narcissists" and throwing rocks at those considered to be BIGGER and mightier and having attained a level of success they either never had nor ever hope to?

NOT because it is UNattainable .. but because they will NOT bother

    THOSE ARE THEIR ISSUES

and i am in NO way helping by perpetuating their fallacy

    they take the form of
    • insecurity
    • feeling inferior
    • victimhood
    • helplessness
    • and hopelessness
    • BLAMING OTHERS
    • PROJECTION (blame is ALWAYS seen as being “out there”)

and they CANNOT STAND to feel inferior .. so they MUST get rid of it

I do NOT want to feel inferior like anyone else

but INSTEAD of blaming others for the way that I CHOOSE TO FEEL?

i try to get to source of the issue ... i put the spotlight ON ME ..

WHAT significance did i give that? (i ask MYSELF)

WHAT did i make that mean about ME? (i ask MYSELF)

WHAT exactly is it that was done TO ME that i am perceiving as "attack"? (i ask MYSELF)

if it was words? i remind MYSELF

"iota, that is ONLY wind with sound .. i think you'll survive"

if it was written? ... well that doesn't even have sound

are you wounded? or are you an INFINITE Being that actually CANNOT be harmed?" (i ask MYSELF)

and, in ALL the meanings, conclusions, significance that was assigned to the actions of others .. exactly WHO ws it that assigned the meaning or significance? (i ask MYSELF)

and the answer is always ME

turns out i'm the one that hurt me by giving it the meaning i did

and so it ends up that the ONLY place "attack" occurred?

    was in MIND

    NOT in FACT

    these are ISSUES

    PERSONAL ISSUES

those addicted to victimhood? remain there
those too lazy to do the work? remain there
those just simply UNINTERESTED in healing or improvement? remain there

and that is WHOLLY THEIR choice

no judgement, we ALL have our lives, paths, etc

    BUT

when they try to get rid of the discomfort THEIR CHOICES result in?

    (feeling inferior)

    BY PROJECTING AND ATTACKING?

it should come as NO surprise if it is CLARIFIED

    THOSE ARE YOUR ISSUES

    and NOT OURS TO RESOLVE

    '
    because the fact is that

NO ONE ELSE CAN resolve issues for another

    THAT is NOT OUR FAULT

pretending it is? results ONLY in perpetuation of the victim consciousness and enabling

so the "being nice" ends up hurting, NOT helping

    PS

as a side note .. it would be UNWISE to ignore or dismiss what I just wrote as irrelevant. .. because ALL of our lives are getting screwed up for being UNCLEAR about this

you know .. the "i identify as ________________" and it becoming EVERYONE's issue and problem to resolve for them ...

like it or not .. FAILURE to understand or ignore HAS ALREADY had an impact

    We are being PLAYED/plagued

“you are responsible for the way I CHOOSE to feel” is reaching planetary level infestation

we thought it was ok, or that we were being “nice” to overlook it and let it go and so we became complicit and enablers

and now? We are paying the price for this on a PLANETARY level.

the time will come when people will SEVERELY regret not having CLARIFIED this AS I just did ..

and the price for failing to do so will be increased censorship and severe restrictions on what we will be ALLOWED to express or not …

in fact? It is happening already, n'est-ce pas?

Stepped up scrutiny of import documents raises disruption fears for iPhone maker

Apple warns suppliers to follow China rules on 'Taiwan' labeling

    Nikkei Asia reports:

"TAIPEI -- Apple has asked suppliers to ensure that shipments from Taiwan to China strictly comply with Chinese customs regulations after a recent visit by senior U.S. lawmaker Nancy Pelosi to Taipei stoked fears of rising trade barriers.

Apple told suppliers on Friday that China has started strictly enforcing a long-standing rule that Taiwanese-made parts and components must be labeled as being made either in "Taiwan, China" or "Chinese Taipei," sources familiar with the matter told Nikkei Asia, language that indicates the island is part of China.

The U.S. tech titan urged suppliers to treat the matter with urgency to avoid possible disruptions caused by goods and components being held for scrutiny, the people said.

The timing is sensitive for Apple, as its suppliers are preparing components that will go into its next iPhones and other new products set to launch this autumn.

Using the phrase "Made in Taiwan" on any import declaration forms, documents or cartons could cause shipments to be held and checked by Chinese customs, the sources added. Penalties for violating such a rule is a fine of up to 4,000 yuan ($592) or, in the worst-case scenario, the shipment being rejected, one of the sources said.

This presents a dilemma for suppliers who need to ship materials, components or parts from Taiwan to China, however, as the democratically governed island also requests that all exports be labeled with product of origin, which means they must carry the words "Taiwan" or "Republic of China," the island's official name, according to suppliers and logistics companies.

Apple's warning comes after shipments from Taiwan to one of iPhone assembler Pegatron's facilities in China were held for review on Thursday to see if the import declaration form or cartons are labeled with "Taiwan" or "Republic of China."

Beijing has long viewed Taiwan as a part of its territory and is strongly opposed to senior U.S. officials such as House Speaker Pelosi making formal diplomatic visits to the island.

To avoid any shipping chaos and further supply chain disruptions, Apple has also told suppliers to form contingency plans or quickly review and amend their labels on cartons and forms for shipments from Taiwan to China, if necessary, the people added.

The increased scrutiny of shipments to Pegatron's Suzhou facility came a day after a senior Pegatron executive and other Taiwanese chip industry leaders met with Pelosi in Taipei at a lunch hosted by President Tsai Ing-wen.

Apple did not respond to Nikkei Asia's request for comment as of publication time.

i have been following several conversations around the world and i'm relieved that on MANY fronts the fact that

    Biden/Pelosi = CHINA

is a fact that did not get obscured in many minds and many are CLEAR that though the objectives between the two

    United States vs CHINA

have valid reason to exist? teenie one being most Americans would really prefer the Constitution instead of subjugation to Communism

it is CLEAR and undeniable that the policy and actions and effect of the Biden Admnistration and his devotee Pelosi are ALL perfectly aligned towards the furtherance of China's special interests NOT the United States

irrespective of Pelosi, reasons existed for Chinese interest in Taiwan that had nothing to do with "Saving Face" and that the trip made by Pelosi simply aided in providing justification > they were mad . when in truth? she likely got a "thank you" card

i'll just post comments i've seen for your consideration and review:

    Quote
A real loyal American leader would be trying to sanction-proof America's economy, not doing everything in their power to hamstring it, as Biden has so obviously done, and which he and his party is now manufacturing this crisis to deflect, while bringing us more of the same economic siege tactics and internal weakening, ahead of major conflict.
    AND:

    Quote
In 2022, worrying about the US-hating left based in Beijing, China is a joke when a lot of US-hating leftism is emanating straight out of Washington DC, America.
    AND:

    Quote
The United States made China what it is today. Our country was totally self sufficient and was sold out by the traitors within, all for greed.

Now that China has become a manufacturing powerhouse, the same traitors are trying to provoke **** with China, which is, obviously, dangerous. That was something I did like about Trump. he was way too bellicose and confrontational.

    However, as Trump correctly said,

you can't blame China for taking advantage of what was handed to them.
The way to re-build manufacturing in the US is make it disadvantageous to the US
(now global) corporations who left the US.
Through legislation, they can be required to manufacture here
if they want to sell here

and that can be done without screaming about China and provoking conflict. Instead, they decide to SUBSIDIZE these corporations with their CHIPS Act, rewarding them.
    AND:

    Quote
Pelosi, Biden and China are friends.

It's all just setting up the narrative.
will update later with reminder of what Taiwan has that China wants (needs)
We should defend our way of life
to an extent that any attempt on it is crushed,

    so that any adversary
will never make such an attempt in the future.

hmm quite a lot of advertising going on actually re gold investment. I do agree however with the assessment that China is highly likely to invade Taiwan in order to protect an important sea lane and trading route.

Much better (but a lot longer and more detailed) is this. Highly recommended for those who are following all this closely, and have the time to listen to something more than a brief overview.

    • ‘Totally Exposed’: Chinese Ambassador Grilled During Press Club Address:

Australian journalists held Chinese ambassador Xiao Qian’s “feet to the fire” during his Press Club address on Wednesday, says Sky News host Andrew Bolt. “And today he got totally exposed,” Mr Bolt said. “That’s no surprise, though, when a flunky of a communist dictatorship tests his lines and deceits on journalists who were raised to be free. “In the end Xiao Qian is still a spokesman of the world's most dangerous dictatorship, spinning for that evil empire. “It was riveting TV, and I hope the tape is shown in schools as a lesson on the power of free speech.”

The Australian’s Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan says he would interpret Chinese Ambassador to Australia Xiao Qian’s remarks to the National Press Club on Wednesday “as the most colossal wake-up call for Australia to get moving”. “You just can’t leave everything to the Americans and hope that they’ll always look after us,” he told Sky News host Chris Smith. “We need to acquire capabilities right now. “That’s the message I’d take out of the Ambassador’s remarks.”
